Congrats on your first turkey! I was genuinely excited for you, your excitement came right through the screen. Yes, you can call a turkey from 100 yards, and further. If they can hear you and they don't have a hen, then there's a chance! Couple tips. Try to be quiet, turkeys have pretty good hearing and human voice can carry a ways. Talking loud can deter them. Don't skyline yourself. If you think turkeys are in a valley below, than stay out of sight of that valley until you find a place to set up. They can possibly see you poke your head over a ridge. Turkeys have incredible eyesight. Know that a turkey can pinpoint your location within a few yards when you call. That turkey knew right where you were and went straight there. It helps if you sit with your back against a tree or brush to break up your outline. And he saw you moving. They catch movement super easily. That's how you got busted. You busted him right back though! 😉 A different call is helpful for getting turkeys to "shock gobble". I use a crow call or a goose call. They hear that sound and will often gobble, giving up their location. But won't head that way since it's not a hen. That gives you the opportunity to find a place nearby to set up and then turkey call. Also try to use trees and brush to hide your movements. Keep something between you and them when you're working into position. Call for turkeys after shooting light in the evening. They'll gobble on the roost. Then you know where to be the next morning, and can be in position before they wake up in the morning. Just don't get too close to where they hear you and may see you. I've learned a lot from failures of my own. I taught myself last spring. Learned a ton just by watching turkeys on private. I've gotten a couple, set my boyfriend up on a few too. Called one off of private last weekend, just to watch him strut the fence line and leave 😢 it's a lot of trial and error, but it sure is fun and exciting. Plus they're delicious! Congrats again. Don't forget to save the beard!

Awesome! Thanks for all the info. Seems like every turkey encounter is different and requires different approaches. I'll be back at it in a few days. Can't wait! Thanks

Congratulations!!! I'm so happy for you buddy!!! Thats a big wild turkey. Most ones i see are smaller. Enjoy that bird its going to be the best turkey meat you've ever had. Cant wait till i see you get a deer next or even an elk. Though dont forget abput the grouse and shroom hunting in your new found love of hunting larger animals. Wild meat harvested tastes so much better than any store bought meat, and is insanley healthier. Take care.

That bird was a monster. Wished I had brought a scale to weigh it. Def over 30 pounds! I turned one of the breasts into chili verde burritos. Delicious! Definitely more hunting content to come but yeah... you never forget your first love haha I'll never stop chasing grouse, mushrooms and trout!

@@CascadeBackcountry Turn it into a trifecta hunting, mushrooming, fishing trip, all in one. I do that sometimes, and bring everything to hunt grouse, deer/bear, and a fishing pole and a lil bait. Always bound to get something even if its only fish most of the time, but at least its something.

@@CascadeBackcountry I've killed turkeys in the fall before but never gotten a tom. That's freakin awesome!!! Excited for you man. Hey when's this weather going to warm up? I might have to cancel my July backpacking trips..... ridiculous!

Man... hunting turkeys in the fall... sounds like a whole new ball game to learn! Yeah I'm really hoping we don't get a repeat of last spring where the snow stuck around FOREVER. Hopefully you don't have to cancel your trip. Fingers crossed! I have faith 😁

Just found your channel because I recently took up grouse hunting and loved your videos. As someone who just started turkey hunting about 4 years ago and is now an addict I can tell you that you got the hard part out of the way by finding areas that hold birds. If I were you I would just try to practice as much as possible with your pot call and mouth calls for the next couple of months. I would advise buying multiple mouth calls because everyone is different and different people need different styles of mouth calls. Shane Simpson on youtube has great videos explaining how to call. You could also watch The Hunting Public and/or Shane Simpson's turkey hunting videos on youtube, they really know what they are doing plus they do some Merriam hunting in the mountains so it would be relatable to your situation. Congrats on your bird and good luck this upcoming spring, i'll be looking forward to watching some more videos!

Thanks! Yeah I'm already getting excited for turkey season! Will definitely be doing plenty of practice and research. I worked my ass off for that first bird last year but still feels like I "got lucky." Really wanna earn it this year. Hopefully it works out and there'll be a fun video!

Congrats! Looking super classy with an over under in the turkey woods. Got my first one this year too out in the NE corner of the state. Bumped mine then called for a couple hours on a field edge over decoys hearing nothing. Then decided to go after him. He blew up, came in fast and I squeezed a shot through a gap. Not sure there is a typical turkey hunt. Thats probably what makes it so exciting.

Thanks! Yeah I like to keep it classy in the mountains 😂 Turkey hunting is definitely a blast. Wish I coulda got out more this year but it's a LONG drive over to that corner of the state. Congrats on your turkey!

Awesome! Sam from our group just got one. He was in the snow! I actually have a couple of turkey hunt videos on my channel but that was before I transitioned to off-road content. I got hooked on turkey hunting because calling them in is just so cool. Last one I shot was kind of similar. I called it in but in snuck in behind me. I commando crawled toward it until it walked past a tree. Awesome video!!!

Definitely another late snow year. Curious to see how it affects high country season again. I remember you doing a turkey video.. I think there was a lot of napping involved 😂

Great stuff on that first bird! Calling in and killing your first bird is so special. I kill lots of turkeys. Some advice i would give, if you dont mind, learn to cut on that pot call (or on another call)..its an excellent locator call and conveys excitement to a gobbler. Plus its not the same lame crow call everyone uses. Add in some purrs and clucks when the tom gets close and that will really pull him in. Getting a mouth call thats easy to blow, like a ghost cut call, is vital as well. You can make really soft yelps, whines, and clucks without moving your hands. Using those soft calls help the gobbler key in on your position, hopefully keeping him from walking up behind you again.

Thanks! And thanks for the advice. I definitely need a lot of practice with all things turkey hunting. Sadly, it won't be this season. Good luck out there. Sounds like you'll put some meat in the freezer!

Same for me, yrs ago. More experienced now, locate them first, and first week of May is my go to time. This is when you can sleep in, and hunt all day, hens are on the nest and you should have plenty of horny gobblers roaming around. I like May also because the snow isn't an issue, I like to hunt up high. Where were you? I'm heading to Chewelah next weekend, how was the snow?
@CascadeBackcountry
@CascadeBackcountry Год назад
Good to hear. I'll be headed back to the Chewelah area in May! Still got one more tag to fill. In this film, I had picked out a bunch of low elevation to hunt but being easy to get to, there lots of people. On my next trip out, I will looking farther into the mountains. There was still plenty of snow on the hill tops and north slopes but in a week or two the mountains should be pretty clear. I doubt you'll have any trouble finding birds!

I definitely don't have a spot haha Honestly I covered a lot of ground to find birds. I started researching months before turkey season. I picked out about 30 public land spots on OnX maps then I just started exploring them looking for birds. Basically a lot of work paid off. Get a full tank of gas and grease up your boots. You'll eventually find one!
