CHEAP DIY AIR RIDE SEAT HACK + LANDSCAPE RAKING TRAILS 🚜👌

Today we're at the property with just the 1025R. This subcompact does NOT provide the comfiest ride with the factory seat, but recently we saw a thread on Green Tractor Talk where someone tried a cheap product to try and provide extra cushion below their seat. We though we'd try it too, and tell you what we thought.
We also pulled out our Dirt Dog landscape rake and take a pass through the woods as well as clear off the debris where we need to till next for the gravel road we're putting in.

I could not tell how that seat system works but shouldn’t that bladder go between the seat and that plate with the two rubber snubbers? Seems like that metal pan is solid. Anyway just a question that popped into my head and wondered if I was missing something or did not understand how that seat is set up on the 1025R. Nice video as always. 👍🏼

Even though I have a suspension ride seat that is adjustable I still found the same problem after hours of use . My wife picked me up a gel filled seat cushion from a automotive parts supplier . It is about 1-1/2 thick and covers the whole seat and has a tab at the back too hold it too the seat . Well it is never coming off the tractor . It absorbs all shock and I never get a soar back or fatigue in my legs etc . Big difference 👍👍👍 Trails for just side by side cruising on I just bring all that branches and debris with no rocks too center of trail and mulch with the flail . Wood chips make a nice base . 👍

As to your Air ride solution, I bought a child's football and placed it directly under the seat of my 1025 JD. Not only does this cushion the ride immensely it pushes the seat upwards and forwards allowing me to reach the pedals without fatigue. Cheap and efficient it is. Enjoy your program a great deal. Learned a lot from you. Hope this is a little payback for what you have given me.

I have found putting the landscape rake at the most aggressive angle will move smaller debris into windrows as the tines will pull a path closer to each other. Also I’ve hung some suitcase weights on it when I want more aggressive action.

Built my trails with l3901 with box blade and a bobcat mini ex to help level the road (Camber). My land is not flat. Maintain with the rake or box blade depending on storm damage from creek flooding. Angle the rake and make wind rows then turn the rake 180 deg and push. You will be surprised by how much more you can push. Have fun out there it’s great therapy!

when it comes to dozer vs excavator, I would choose ex. You already have tractors for pushing/pulling, but a ex would allow you to dig. THe mini ex's are very handy versatile machines.

When I use my York rake I do not use the top link. I use a piece of chain instead. This way when you're going over rough terrain the your York rake is not digging in and making ruts.Just get 2 pear shaped quick links that your front and rear pins fit through, then you don't need a huge chain. In spots with real hard ground I added a few 25 pound dumbbell weights on top of rake.

When I had my 1025, my back was always sore from the seat bottoming out. I put in a set of those heavy duty springs and it definitely made a difference! I'm not sure why John Deere doesn't put those in as standard equipment. Anyway, I would never use a 1025 again without them! I don't have to worry about that now because I replaced my 1025 with a 3046 with an air ride seat. It was worth the upcharge. And as far as using my landscape rake, I find that angling it works the best for me. Debris builds up, but then slides to the side and forms a windrow. It's almost like dirt coming off an angled back blade. You spend more of your time raking, and not as much clearing the jammed up debris that builds up on the rake. I use it to touch up my driveway, too. It's not as aggressive as a back blade or box blade and works fine for finishing. You're making great progress on your property! Love the videos!

Growing up we used the landscape racks for when we would prepare a new law. after grading we would use the landscape rake on an angle and run it over the graded yard and it would put rocks in windrows to be picked up with a loader or shovel.

The rake really needs down pressure applied. Old Ford tractor I've used before didn't have the down pressure addition but used a spring assembly on the top link to absorb bumps/hits. This would allow you to put a nice weight on the rake to dig in. You could have the top link set long for pushing it into the ground or short for floating when raking field grass/leaves. With the pressure you can use it in place of a box blade with the stingers even to dig through grass to level areas and it is great for smoothing out soil this way as well (like a back/box blade even). Other than the narrow trail use, it's handy having the 1-2ft stick out for angling (you don't loose items to the middle of a path like you did in the video) and essentially sweeping the path from the middle to the sides.

You could try taking a couple lbs of air out of your rear tires to soften it up a bit. I feel with my rake when its angled, its more aggressive with how it rakes the ground, because essentially by angling it your taking the spaces between the tines and making them smaller.

Don't get me wrong that works but if you want to see deer get a bush hog. I've have this hawk that has figured out that the food is plentiful behind the bush hog. Problem tow behind. Front of tractor goes up, the tow behind goes down. Rear wheels of tractor goes up, tow behind raises. If tractor is wallowing, the tow behind wallows. Best to have blade on front leveling ground for the tractor. Like maybe lowering the bucket to smooth it out as you go. Not dig, but level. Bucket fill in holes and take off high spots before the tractor tires get there.

As a west coaster, the fuel load in there is disaster waiting to kappen. I would rent a skidsteer mulcher and grind all that debris a few inches into the dirt and smooth that in where the road was going thru. The rest of it would get broken down enough to at least keep any fire on the ground for a fair distance from the road.

I like the suggestion of the air bag modified seat. From your attempt to add it, it look like your location was incorrect. But getting it to stay in place will take some retainer, if above the area u put the bag. Thanks

Right now it's exactly where the springs are. You're thinking it should sit on top of the plate it's below?

@@GoodWorksTractors I needed to watch again from my computer. it was hard to tell if the air bag was pushing the plait up, to give more movement (travel).

Personally I have been thinking about this for awhile. I have a sore Mountain Bike Shock that I am going to hook up. I am still working out the details but that was how I planned to control my seat and give myself a cushioned ride. Once I get it up and running I will post a Vid.

One thing i noticed with a rake though is if u angle it it will kinda cut with the tooth edges and act like a sort of tiller with the top 1/4” of dirt and will build up and roll out the trailing side. I have become very attached to my rake for final grading.

Have you ever tried the Pats Category 1 Premium 3 Point Quick Change Hitch with Bar? So far it has been working out great on my 1025R

There is one advantage to the rake not being QH compatible. I can't rotate mine around 180° when it is mounted on the tractor.

I don’t know if you are trying to level it with the landscape rake but I had a thought. If you turn around the rake and make it a push rather then a pull. Might make a difference. Don’t know if it will work or not

LOL. I have never seen those rakes do anything. Better off pulling an old piece of chain link fence.

Got any other ideas or hacks to improve operator comfort?

I have the same size Carlisle tires that you have on my zero turn. I lowered the air pressure to 12psi and ride and traction improved dramatically. Tires are the suspension for tractors etc. Small tires hit every bump larger tractors and tires bridge over some of the bumps. Reinflate tires for heavy loader work or jump in that nice skid steer.

You can get a nice replacement seat even if you have to make your own brackets. A very nice suspension seat. Spring, hydraulic, or air. All of those will be available in that size most likely.

that air bag seems like i good idea to help soften the ride. was wonder how well it held up ? got me thinking that after some use it just might start to wear and leak air

If you’d throw that quick hitch away and get the Pats easy change you could be working and not sweating.

Rocks will roll right out of the rake. If you're doing a rocky area, angle it so that all the rocks roll out to one side, then you don't have 2 trails behind you, just the one you can pick up on the next run
