Way back when I started growing in the 90s, I bought the biggest LFH that FUNGI PERFECTO sold as well as the biggest ALL AMERICAN STEREOCLAVE as well....the LFH cost me $1400 after shipping and the STEREOCLAVE cost about the same price. Both are still working great. The stereoclave has its own heat element built in and I can cook 12 bags at a time. What FLOWRATS is doing is disruptive and revolutionary, I LOVE IT! A laminar flow hood is a game changer for sure!
These are not Laminar, Labrat is doing nothing but deceiving people who have not done research, do not be fooled by cheap prices, they are not proper for mycology
I just heard about you! I’ll be binge watching your videos for the next few days! I’m new and my first shot at growing was crap. I’m now learning agar and getting the start of some rhizomorphic growth! Exciting stuff, but I really need a flow good.
If you don't have the cash for a flow hood yet. Work above your oven with the door cracked open. The hot air coming out going up works wonders. Look it up.
I used the oven method and it seems to work pretty good. Did agar work and ended up getting about half the dishes I made which I figured was pretty good but laminar flow hood would be better but I'm poor lol.
@@goatlandia8457 I ended up doing more research on still air boxes. (SAB) and practicing careful techniques to minimize contamination. I decided to save money and go that route. I'm a beginner and convinced myself early on that I needed laminar flow to get started, and that's just not true.
Willy, a quick and dirty upgrade one could do to the unit to provide an on/off switch would be to get a smart plug for $8-$10 bucks, plug into wall, then plug LFH into plug! You could activate it from your phone!
@@benredding7080 Because the units he is reviewing have no on and off switch. When you setup your hobby lab you usually want everything easy to use and access. You could either wire your own switch which is actually WAY easier than most think or use a smart plug!
@Stephan Jeffery This is exactly what I need I have the XS and the only “annoyance” was having to plug and unplug the unit every time I used it. Thanks for the idea will definitely purchase
Looking at the filters on these make me think these are not so great. They are way too thin, and the fans look cheap as well. The only model I see that looks half way decent is like $800 without shipping, and even that only has a like a 1 1/2" thick hepa filter. You could make a much better machine for that kind of money. The only reason the cheap ones seem so affordable, is because they are made out of super cheap parts. If you have any carpentry skills you could build the same thing for less than $100 easily.
@@Rymorin4 Not sure what that has to do with these flowhoods? Not sure mycology will ever go "mainstream" How many people grow their own cannabis since legalization even though it's way easier than mycology?
@@Humboldtcounty707 exactly, I got a 240mm muffin fan and a half inch HEPA filter, 17x20. Used a gasketed tote as the housing and used silicon to attach the filter to the tote. 60 bucks for the filter, 20 bucks for the fan and 12 bucks for the tote.
@@Humboldtcounty707 I don't get contamination from the machine but from my own sterile tek. Maybe 4 bacterial contams every other pour. My waters a little funky.
Dont do it. This is just a plain HEPA filter.. These do not produce laminar flow, laminar flow is nessecary to avoid turbulence which can introduce contaminats. Most laminar Filters cost around $300 alone without the hardware to power them. Do not be fooled by these cheap shoddy hepa filters, they are selling you a false dream. Build your own, source the correct filter, spend the extra money and dont be fooled by WIlly, he is just brand repping and making BS videos.
My dude, can you turn up your mic please? I have to turn my speakers all the way up, then I forget; then I watch another video and my speakers blast me into the 12th step of sobriety. You have been my go-to know all for mycology. Keep on keepin on!
I need help lowering the humidity in the clean room I’ve been tasked with maintaining while my roommate who is usually responsible for maintaining is out of town. The humidity is up to 95 and there is pooling everywhere. I’m using an inkbird 608-T humidifier controller.
I haven't heard much about air purification. For the flow hood and grow room. An ion generating air purification unit is a great addition.. in addition to hepa air filtration.
Hey Willy. Newish here. Trying to figure out Washington state legality and where it's going in the near future. I'm a hobbyist trying to possibly create a business.
@infectedpuddle1638 did that offend you? All he said was what he did for 150 and other people can do it too...people get upset or take everything personal these days. I'll thank the OP, I was going to make one out of a 24x24 filter too, but didn't think about a leaf blower... i was looking at some fams for like 80-120, I could get an old used one for next to nothing and do it. What was the depth of the box between the filter and the back of the box? Did you put the leaf blower ontop or on the back? Also, did you wire in anything to make it adjustable? If you get too much it becomes turbulent, not enough then same thing. I'd hate to go through all the trouble just to find out it's putting out too much air... did you build a cover for the filter that could double as a work bench? Since anything you work with needs to be 3inch up above the bottom of the filter to get laminar flow you need a cookie rack or something anyway, a cover like that would be nice and i feel like that could work well.
Have you looked into aminos or enzymes? I fell into a health kick and researching it all made me think of how everyone in the mycology community may get into that and making their own chains. It's a lot more complicated and investing is a need but once people get into tissue culture i think its worth looking at. Thanks for all your help. I need to invest in a laminar and quit letting my a.d.d. distract me with other hobbies.
Oh wow, these are definitely not worth that much money. Looking at the quality of the hepa filters, and fans. Don't know why he's actually promoting these?
I'm calling this product out for a laminar flow test. I'm sure other mycologist would love a run at this gimmick. Sorry Willy You mean well but this seems like false adverting to me. Nothing personal just don't like good people being scammed for hard earned cash. Veteran mycologist would def have the same outlook. ANYONE could do the same with a plastic tote, CHEAP FILTER, and a PC fan well under $350. I've seen sooo many creations right down to air purifiers connected to a SAB and they all are not the same as a true laminar flow hood/cabinet. You might be lucky and already have a clean environment to work in but this isn't up to par.
We will be the first ones to admit that the smaller units do not provide perfect laminar flow but they do provide sufficient flow for mycological work. I personally worked with the Model S for over 6 months in various environments. My success rates were very high. We began our mushroom farm with that model and I was working out of a 20' shipping container in the middle of a field. The Nomad is the only unit made with an axial fan and we have ran numerous tests with it and it has passed all of them. It's best use would be for swabs, prints and agar work. And, yes these units can be built for cheaper but not everyone has the tools, the knowledge or the time to build these for themselves. Our profit percentage is incredibly low. There are FFU re-sellers out their making more profit than us and they don't even have to do any building. We are here for the community. Not the money. We will gladly walk someone through how to build a unit for themselves. We offer larger units made with higher quality filters that will get you laminar flow. We also offer custom builds if you have a filter in mind. Our only aim is to help this community and help people find affordable alternatives to still air boxes/expensive lab grade equipment. Hey TTF, I absolutely love your work☯️🍄❤️ I was just wondering if you had any way to talk privately that didn't involve donating. It's not like I don't want to donate, I just don't have any money to spend, I hope you understand. Anyways like I said I really love your work and it gives me hope for a better future. It's just, have a few suggestions and I would really love to cooperate with you in order to spread knowledge to those who may not have money like me.
Thanks Willy Better to support these people than the CCP despite the price as long as it works. The PC fan and thin filter make it seem of low quality I don’t have enough experience to say for sure though. The hard wood and craftsmanship are nice . I would rather build it that way I learn a new craft in the process. Mush Love
Your right, these are not proper, a Laminar flow filter is much more expensive than these hepa filters they are using which cannot produce a laminar flow, maybe youll get lucky but this is not a proper device, a real Laminar filter alone will cost as much as these "flowhoods"
@@triple_gem_shining im friends with James the owner of Fungi Flow Hoods, talked to him yesterday he said hes got like 4 or 5 units left. Id hit him up see if you can email him through the website
This makes me want to start building flow hoods because all of those look cheap.I'm building an actual laminar flow hood to specs 18x24 and its going to be less expensive than the cheapest model shown with a 6" thick filter. Too many people just throw money at things and never truly understand what they are doing. You couldn't do bags in front of any of these. even my 18x24 will be a small work space, but it's a start. Just like everything, you can buy a cheapo and then a year later buy a good one, or just do it right the first time.
Hey Willy, is there a way for me to submit something to you that you may want to use for content? I've built a "Flow Box" using a 44qt monotub, intake PC fan on top pulling air in through a MERV13 air filter. It pushes air into the box and out through the hand holes. Got pics and instructions to build . I think it'd really be a low cost option for growers.
It's not impossible to use something like that, you have to put a "tunnel" infront of the filter, with plexiglass on the top so you can see what you're working on. That way no open air gets sucked into the turbulent flow.
Hey Willy what's up. I love your content and been a follower of your channel. I'm super interested on a FH. But I'm from Mexico. FH are practically non existent here, and materials to buy one are hard to get. Is there any option you know that can ship down here? I sent an email to lab rat to see if they ship here. I need one so bad.
Good luck inoculating grow bags for gourmet mushrooms, these are too small for that, but probably not bad for a small space doing mostly agar or LC work.
Many people hate on willy, but the dude is legit. He's got his Master's in microbiology, and he is truly about helping people. Far from an amateur. He doesn't show his flushes because the youtube algorithm blocks him. Don't believe the haters on the forums, they don't know him.
@@skraaskrratrynabecray863 Thank you so much, I know I've seen these in a different video but forgot to keep track of what video and where to order from so for real thank you!
Long enough to know a rip off when I see one. Just 5 months ago you were commenting about having no need for flow hoods.... How long have you been in the game?🤔
Plus you commented that you just bought one, the same day you made this comment, HTF do you know these work just fine? Sounds like you just bought it..
these look janky AF, and theyre more expensive than you are saying they are. That model is $389 before shipping. They are pretty high dollar for the materials used
I'm sorry. These are junk. They're a small box with a computer fan and a cheap hepa filter. There's no way this generates laminar flow. I'm not saying that this wouldn't get you by in a pretty clean environment, but this is not a laminar hood.
It's literally the same price as an actual flow hood from myco stores and made from budget materials. Avoid this, save and get an actual proper big one when you're ready. Stick to SAB until then and it works.
That's not a laminar flow hood. It's just an air purifier hepa filter with a couple tiny fans. You could build one yourself for way cheaper, those filters are like $30. The fans are about the same price. I ended up ordering a thicker HEPA filter from meyers mushrooms and built a box for it. All in I've spent $125 on it minus the fan I already owned.
