"The more Arab my mom wanted us to be, the more American we wanted to be," says Reem Assil, remembering her upbringing in a Middle Eastern family living in Boston. As a kid, all Reem wanted to eat was spaghetti and meatballs, so her mom got clever and found a way to sate her kids' craving but with a Levantine twist. Today, Assil makes her mom's kafta meatballs in a classic seven-spice tomato sauce, which she likes to serve over spiced rice as well as pasta, and still brags that "Arabs make the best spaghetti and meatballs."
Assil is the founder of Reem's California restaurants in San Francisco and Oakland.
The 7x7 Spice-In is a series of three online cooking classes that aims to bring the warmth of Arab hospitality into your home during the Covid-19 pandemic. Subscribe to our channel for more cooking classes with Assil this summer.
