Presented by Scott McGee of The Sisu Way podcast, this video is to provide you information on how to (DIY) convert a chest freezer to an ice bath that's always ready from start to finish.
Inspired by the Wim Hof Method, ice bath/cold exposure is shown to boost your immune system, tap into the power of the cold to burn fat, improve sleep quality, increase hormone levels, reduce inflammation, increase “feel good” chemicals in the brain called endorphins, and increase your mental resilience.
This video covers the following topics: chest freezer selection/size, customizing the exterior of the chest freezer, timers, thermometers, sealing, dealing with leaks, water levels/ice formation, temp, cleaning/maintenance, and more info that will help you on your journey towards an at-home ice bath for cold exposure.

Right on bro! Never forget to unplug before entering. 62 year old man, 42 years as a commercial refrigeration technician. Grocery stores and convenience stores. Water and electric don’t mix ! I know you know that, you told us . I suggest making a label on the lid to remind people. In case you are not home , and someone who doesn’t know uses it. Where was the leak coming from? You say these things have a drain in them, and that’s where it leaked out? I live in phoenix and use my pool . Teathered swimming for 30 minutes. April to October 15 th . When I’m for 30 minutes you can’t have the water too cold. 65-70 is pushing it. So June to sept I have no cold water and I get bummed. The coldest shower water those months is still warm. But oct 10 th to April 10 th , the pool is plenty cold, 38-55 degrees. Just stay in 5 minutes longer in 55 vs 38. I need to build one for summer. It’s too hard to re condition each season. 4 th year of cold water submersion. I don’t dig the cold shower as much as submersion. I will fill the tub with 50 degree water. Thanks for sharing your time and thoughts! Still toying with your idea and a commercial ice machine, to throw ice in a small tank.

If you use an ink bird temp control it will allow you to set the temperature and it will maintain the temperature by cutting the power on and off to the unit without having to figure out a timer.

Hey, Scott! Thank you for the video! I liked it a lot, I've seen it three times, something about ice is fascinatinting to me. I also have a cold plunge, not as big as yours, but I love it. I am doing a bath, or two or sometimes three a day. Before I got it I think your video was the first I have seen about how to make one. I am using, as you may already know about now, for cleaning, a ozone generator and a small filtration for aquariums, to move the water and clean the water. Works great and rarely change the water, few times a year. 5-10 minutes of O3 after each bath and it stays clean. All the best! Update (how to constantly have ice in the tub): I'm going to add here some details I learned from using a chest freezer like this, for those who what to know (science shit, but very useful for me): • 36° is a lot more confortable than 32°, meaning that ice in the water changes the situation a lot; • Scott here has 32°. Once the water starts forming and keeping ice like that, it can ONLY have 32°, because that's how water works, it is 32° as long as there are both states simultaneous present, liquid and solid, meaning ice. And that's when thermometers become useless. They are useful while the water is all liquid, but useless after ice is present. If your thermometer shows less than 32°, you only have ice in there or the termometer is off. Water is less than 32° F only in solid state -meaning ice- and above 32° only in complete liquid state. This means that if there's simultaneously ice and liquid water in the freezer and your thermometer shows a temperature other than 32° F, the termometer is off by the difference between 32° and what it shows. Remember that value and you will know the corect temperature of the water. I have two thermometers, when there is ice in the liquid one shows 33.44°, one 30.92° when both should show 32°F. Heat is a form of energy. It is the movement of molecules. There are two types of heat: measurable and non-measurable, latent. The heat that is drawn from the water after it forms ice is called latent heat, it's there but it can't be measured, weird but it happens like that. • What time to keep it on: To determine approximately what amount of time to keep the freezer on, to do calculations, you need to have a probe-thermometer, the ones that have a long cable with a probe at the end that goes in the water. With a thermometer with a probe at the end and the freezer on, note how long it takes to lower the temperature by .1°, maybe 1° and divide that by 10. Mine takes 8.1 minutes to lower the temperature by .1°C, so approximately 90 minutes to lower the temperature by 1°C. Than, measure or note how much you heat the water by taking one bath. Mine is 0.8° C, I don't know how much it is in Fahrenheit. Also note how much the water heats by itself, without you in it in a 24 hour period. Now you can use this formula to determine how much time per week you need to keep the freezer on: [(amount of heat for one bath)*(number of baths pe week) + (amount of heat that the water temperature rises per day)*7]/(the time that it takes to lower the temperature by 1°F). Use this starting after you already have the amount of ice that you want in the tub, and you will constantly have ice in the water. • I start it two-three times per week, I keep it approximately 20 total, and the ice rises to the top after about two days since I stop the refrigeration (I think it takes so long because my chest freezer has aluminium walls and the ice sticks to them). Since it is so much ice, I break it with a hammer. • Keeping the water moving with an aquarium filter means that, because heat is movement, the water will freeze a lot slower and will melt much more. But the water movement is useful to keep it cleaner, so I use more refigeration. The 20 hours of refrigeration per week is ok to me. Hope this helps somebody, it helps me a lot and it took me a long time to learn it.

Luckily, doing cold showers now, I have plenty of time before I need to do something like that. So I'll get a great deal :) Also, I have purchased his 10 week course. It's actually great for this. Good job! Some guys say seal off the drain? You put a gasket in yours , so you can use it? Is the only thing I’m confused on? Great video. I discovered the cold water by accident. I’m 62 and a life of hard excercise put me in the swimming pool. Knees and shoulders, jogging and weights after 40 years was just too much. I would swim laps in a 60-65 degree pool for 40 minutes, until the weather warmed it up. I found so good mentally after 40 minutes in 65 degrees. Is how I stumbled on Wim Hof . Life is full of pain and suffering and even trauma like Wim Hof went through. We go in the cold water for our minds , anything else is secondary.

You could try using a temperature controller. They sell them for home brewing kegerators. The probe goes into the water and the freezer would plug into the temperature control unit, when the water reaches the temperature that you set the controller turns off the freezer. They run about 30 to 60 dollars on amazon. It might not work as well for forming ice as the timer method you are currently using though.

well done on the video. I started doing the WHM a couple months ago and my pool was great in Jan and Feb but the water temp is already up to 70deg F in Phoenix area, so not much of a challenge anymore. I was looking for ways to get a good cold plunge with the upcoming warm weather and this looks like just the thing I'm looking for. The thought occurred to me to maybe try using a vinyl pool or pond liner material to line the freezer to prevent leaks, possibly use a construction adhesive to glue the edges so that the door seal will still work, the weight of the water will keep it pressed to the sides, most of those liners are black so it would match your aesthetic of your patio. I hit subscribe.
@scottmcgee4518
@scottmcgee4518 5 лет назад
Thank you for the comment and for checking out the video. I have not had a big issue with leaks, but it is also in a location where if there are some its not a big deal and wouldn't significantly drain it. I enjoy the ice forming on the bottom and sides of the freezer. I break them off when I get in and that is what creates the "ice cube" look. I have seen some with a pond liner though.

the good thing about cold winters is that u dont need to produce ice, u can just get it from the tap water which is 12 degreeds celsius ( at least where i live), so all u have to do is fill up your beth tube and get inside. My longest cold bath at 12 degree celsius was for 10 min, but i just found out today that best is 15 min, so my next mission is 15 min.

I don't remember the exact one, but it was something like the one below. I have since taken it off because it started to crack a bit due to exposure to the sun/elements. www.amazon.com/VViViD-Black-Textured-Air-release-Adhesive/dp/B01M0QFLZW/ref=sr_1_43?dchild=1&keywords=black+vinyl+wrap&qid=1605594155&sr=8-43

What is recommended for east coast residents who receive heavy snowfall outside, will freezer be safe outside during cold,snowfall?

Hi @Scott McGee Looking to create a chest freezer cold plunge solution myself - thanks for the video! Just be careful with the grounding of the freezer. Grounding the freezer to the dirt or "earth" is not the same as protecting you from faults in the circuit. Thought I comment just in case you want to consult with an electrician on how to protect yourself whilst using the chest freezer. I would suggest further, but I'm in Australia, and the circuitry may be different from in the States. I would look into an RCBO Protected Weatherproof outlet. This will protect you from residual current leaks as well as function as a circuit breaker. The residual current device will be far better at saving your life as capable in detecting small leakages in electricity lower than the threshold that is deemed unsafe for human bodies.

would unplugging the freezer before use mitigate the risk or being shocked? is that what your talking about
@scottmcgee4518

It’s always unplugged during use.

Is it possible to have this outside with no cover from the elements?
@scottmcgee4518
@scottmcgee4518 5 лет назад
Depends on what your elements are like. I live in southern California so the weather isn’t crazy. I have it covered though and have used a tarp at a minimum when it rains.

After 2 years do you recommend filtration and sanitation system? I'm a part of chest freezer ice plunge group and those that dont have linex lining, they dont seem to break 2 years. I'd like to atleast get 3 - 5 years. Does this align with your experience?
@scottmcgee4518
@scottmcgee4518 3 года назад
I have not gone the filtration system route yet. I’m sure there are plenty of success stories out there and people with experience with it.

So mine will not get that cold. Water temp is 63 degrees even after a few hours on max settings. I did not seal mine before I filled it. Didn’t think about it. Wondering if I damaged the internals by not sealing the inside

Lot of factors here. A few hours is not long enough and you may have too much water in the tank.

when turning it on first time, did you crank it up to the max or else?
@scottmcgee4518
@scottmcgee4518 4 года назад
Yes on max. I actually added a couple ice blocks to help speed up to cooling process. Got them at 7-11.

So the temperature control is set to maximum I assume, then you use the timer?

Yes that is what I have been doing.

Id like to augment my home water system with ice cold water. Im from Colorado where the water was well freezing a good portion of the year, to Michigan, oddly, the water is hardly cold even in the middle of winter.

Water comes from the ground, and that stays about the same temperature in the winter

Nice looking freezer, but by wrapping it you are inhabiting the heat from escaping. The resulting effect is longer compressor running. I’m an appliance repair technician

I don’t remember which exact one it is but it’s a matte vinyl wrap. Lots of options out there. Bubbles if left in heat or not applied correctly.

Have you considered adding Epson salt to prevent ice from forming? It's good for your muscles and skin as an additional benefit.
