My 2013 Cruze was a great car for 8 years. In the last year, it has been costing thousands to fix. Now it's the turbo that blew and caused massive oil and coolant leaks. I put about $8,000 in it in the last year. I should have gotten rid of it before the turbo blew. Now I feel like I need to fix it so I can go shopping for a new car. I can't get anything for it as it is.

Yea I was going to do detailed videos fixing the issues like I do on all our project vehicles on the channel but filming makes everything take 10 times longer and my son needed this car fixed ASAP. Besides that we do nitrous and turbo V8 builds here so I didn’t think my regular audience would care about fixing a little Chevy econobox anyway. Lol.

I am so glad you made this video. The 2012 Cruze Eco just hit 60k and the plastic water outlet broke, so now I am replacing the whole cooling system. It always smelled of antifreeze at 5k when it was new. The dealer could not find or fix the issue. That hose behind the turbo is a pain. Now because of you, I am going upgraded hose and going to shield the back of the turbo lines. Thank you!!

Bought a 2012 turbo new, and bought a 2014 used later. Now both at about 107k miles. It is a DIY only car. If it had to go to the shop every time, BIG BUCKS! You forgot the plastic coolant outlet pipe. other then that you've done it all. 12 has the original turbo, 14 was done warranty at 55k miles. Do the intake fix kit on the forum for the PCV, test for boost leaks, etc. and it's a good car.

Cruze Kit v3. It's a kit some guy who owns a plastic moulding shop decided to put together for his cruze and wound up making an entire new company out of it because so many people wanted them. This guy remedied the shit engineering from GM with nothing more than plumbing parts from the hardware store, not even joking. Completely bypasses the issue altogether. Google cruze kits. It won't take long to find. Version 3 is the one I have, and yes, fixed the PCV issue on mine and probably saved me another couple hundred in replacement parts.

Been dealing with a 2012 Cruze with a weird problem. One day out of the blue it wasn’t registering any temperature and the AC wouldn’t work which is a normal issue from the research I did. I changed out both temp sensors and the thermostat because those were the main issues that could cause that. Well it kinda fixed the issue but not fully. It drives around town fine and the temp/AC works perfectly. The issue now is that when you get on the highway and hit the cruise control it goes right back to registering no temp and the AC shuts off. Of course unhooking the battery will reset it so now I just use the car to drive around town and don’t even get it on the highway/interstate anymore and carry a 10 mm wrench in the glovebox to reset the battery if I need to. If it wasn’t paid for I would get rid of it. By the way if anyone reading this has had this issue and figured it out let me know what you had to do. Thanks!

@@BadLuckGarage It did help. I got a few tid bits regarding the turbo. I may disagree regarding the difficulties. I was very happy when I replaced the turbo. I got a new one online for roughly 150 and it only took 2 hours to replace. Even fully loaded I still get close to 40 mpg with the turbo. Almost everything is easy to access. Compared to Ford repairs on this model are a dream. Currently at 239K miles. I noticed you don't have your water overflow modified. Its best to add a drain line to the over pressure of the reservoir that leads down so it doesn't eject coolant into 'bad places' that are much harder to clean and make the cab stink.

Fortunately I am a retired mechanic, so I could repair them myself. I watched your video from start to finish and almost everything in your video I have replaced except a turbo. (regular oil changes and full synthetic oil I think helped). I was wondering while watching, if you were going to mention the pcv system that a lot of people miss diagnose and lol you did. I've had my Cruze for 3 years. Started out with 60k miles. As soon as it hit the 80k mark, all this crap, plus MORE, startrd to fail. I have replaced 2 thermostats, a water pump, all the coolant lines, that turbo oil line, the valve cover twice, the oil pressure sensore, the evap cannister line, and now needs an oil pump. It's only at 90k now. A new thing went wrong every month like clockwork when the issues started. Truly engineered to fail. A real POS! I keep saying I'm going to sell it, but then something else goes wrong and I don't want to pawn this thing off on someone else with any issues. Never thought I'd be longing for a Toyota Camry. 300k cars with just oil changes. Smh!

So. I am on the other end of the Cruze family. 2012 LS 1.8L 6MT that I purchased in 2016 at 63k miles. Currently at 171k and couldn't be happier with my car. I, however, did a TON of research before purchasing mine lol. I walked into my local Chevy dealership and asked, "How many manual cars (not trucks) do you have on the lot?" After looking at me funny, they said "Three. Two Cruzes and a Sonic." I asked if one of the Cruzes was an LS and they said, "Yes." I said, "I'll take it." It just so happened that it was Ice Blue Metallic and light blue is my favorite color. When they sold it to me they replaced the flywheel, clutch, brakes and tires. After financing, the car was paid off in 2021 at $9,000. I traded in my '05 Chrysler Town and Country minivan for it and luckily since I stuck with Wells Fargo for the Cruze, they gave me outright value on the van ($4,000). I'm in three Cruze groups. CruzeTalk.com, STL Cruze & Sonic and Illinois Cruzers. I had done tons of reading on CruzeTalk before I found 'Veronica' so I knew to steer away from the turbo variant. I feel so bad for the folks that have had so many problems with the 1.4Ts and the automatic slushboxes. TL;DR: I love my 2012 1.8L 6MT. In 6 years and 108,000 miles, the only things outside of routine maintenance that I've had to replace are the timing belt, water pump (wasn't even leaking), trans and coolant flush at 100k, valve cover gasket and the igntion coil assembly. My clutch is just now starting to slip a little bit, luckily I have a flywheel and clutch collecting dust in the garage lol. The only modifications that I've made are 1LT wheels, Kenwood KDC-HD262U, Audiopipe APCL3002, 2x Rockford Fosgate R2D4s in a sealed Atrend box, Stinger 4ga wiring, big 3 and an Autocraft Platinum AGM battery. Voltage rarely drops below 13.9V. I've hit 141.3dB @ 52Hz.

My partner and I both loved Chevrolet. He had always wanted a red Chevrolet Cruze RS, I was at the time driving a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt LT. From 50K miles to 90k the car wasn’t to bad! Good on gas and was decently comfortable. Then at 97k I started loosing coolant, but wasn’t leaking it. After replacing the head gasket, water pump, timing chain tensioner (they had timing chain issues and mine was rattling ) after all that it still lost coolant. I decided to trade it off for a 2009 Corolla! Have owned nothing but Toyotas ever sense. My partner after his dream of a Cruze was dashed by my awful experience with my car he started buying Subarus! I think the coolant system integration is just crazy for one, because when the heater, core per se hoses or inlet outlet tubes fail, you can’t bypass the bloody system like you could on a typical car because the heater hoses are integrated in with the coolant system. And also the worst engine combination is the 1.4 turbo if you want to get a cruze run away from the turbo 1.4 L get a 1.8 or just get a 1.4 with no turbo just stay away from the turbos you’ll be replacing that bad boy more than you’ll change your oil sometimes.

I had a brand new 2011 Cruze 2LT. Within 8 months, I had to get rid of it because it kept stalling from a dead stop! The car had a 1.4l with a turbo. Also the car would jerk constantly because of the CVT transmission. When I took the car to the dealership for the first time because of these issues, they “tried” to fix the problems. The second time, they refused it. So, I went to the BBB and filed a complaint. I was hoping to get my money and declare the car a lemon. GM offered me $500 rebate, and I had to keep the car. I told them forget that! Sold it, and I got a different car. A full sized sedan! Also, the Cruze had very bad blind spots because of the thick “A” pillar and “B” pillar. There were times that I had to stick my head out to see if there were any cars in my blind spots. The cabin was too small. I’m only 5’10” and about 220lbs. The center consul was nothing but a 1”X1”X1” plastic foam that my elbow keep slipping off. Seeing these videos about the Cruze, I’m glad that I got rid of it!

I lost my mind (wasn't a car guy) and bought a driving school five years ago. It came with two 2nd gen 1.8 Cruzes and a 1.4. Since then I've added four, and three were totalled (other drivers' fault every time). The four current ones, three 1.4s and one of the original 1.8s, are all at around 150k miles. I wouldn't want one for my personal car, wouldn't recommend them to anyone, but they're great for a driving school. They're relatively cheap, plentiful, not hard to work on for a mid 50s noob like me, and parts are easy to find. 🤣 The instructors like them because they're fairly comfortable and feel solid. They'll all be out while the Corollas sit. It's just that the engines are pieces of shit. Coolant leaks are normal. Emissions sensors always setting codes. Transmission in one is getting rough. I order evap canisters in bulk. But these cars each do 30-40k hard miles a year teaching kids how to drive. They suck in a lot of ways but they're okay for what we do.

I’m not surprised. After everything I replaced on this car, 2 weeks later it sprung another coolant leak and left my son stranded. I needed up having to replace some weird coolant manifold in a parking lot. I will say that it’s been a good car since then (knock on wood) and hasn’t had anymore issues since then. Although I know the turbocharger hotside is cracked and I will have to replace the turbo at some point.

Worst vehicle I’ve ever owned. I have had the 2015 ltz rs model for a year and a half which this trim comes with all the gadgets and has a very nice interior and exterior. But that’s it. That’s all that’s good about it. Ive had countless coolant leaks causing overheating leaving me stranded 3 different times, replaced O2 sensors twice, temp gauge twice, cat converter on the first and second engine, water pump on the first and second engine. Reason for engine replacement was my head gaskets kept blowing out on the first engine so after two head gasket repairs my mechanic advise me to just replace the motor since I had a full coverage warranty with only a $50 deductible for each shop visit. New used motor had 60k miles. Immediately had coolant leaks and had to get another water pump. My engine is currently running a PO420 and a PO171. Had fuel injectors and cat replaced but the code didn’t go away. Assuming the O2 sensors went bad but haven’t had time to replace them. I don’t even know if I will. I’m so sick of it I don’t care anymore. No human being has ever had the ability to make me as angry as this piece of garbage. Buying a full coverage warranty has seriously been the best decision I have ever made for myself saving me thousands and thousands of dollars. Unfortunately that decision was also paired with my worst decision. Buying this car.

I'm sorry you bought one of these... wish you luck! The water pump on mine went out at 70k miles, the water reservoir was able to stay at halt full until it was repaired, BUT with just that leak alone, it was enough to overheat the engine and warp the head gasket. Now my car starts up rough and just about dies before it idles smooth and then runs fine. To fix the problem I was told by two mechanics that they won't work on a turbo engine, they'll replace the engine for 7k though to fix the problem. What car has the water pump going out at 70k miles? A POS, that's what. And what car overheats with a half full water pump that leaks a little? a BIG POS, that's what. I will never buy another chevy again.

I have one in Sri Lanka. Not a 1.4 or 1.8 gas(petrol), but a 2.0 diesel from 2011. Has a VM Motori engine. It is reliable; has good torque (241 lb-ft), but awful power(148HP), even for a 2.0D. It is a large engine size and car for the standards in our country, people also like the power output. But it takes 10 seconds to reach 60 mph(100kmph). Has the 6T45 trans, it shifts firmly sometimes. Mine is a fairly comfortable and reliable car, but the transmission and power is the biggest let down. My car is somewhat heavy, in 1510kg. When the 2.0D struggles to pull it, no wonder the 1.4 is a crappy engine. Most of it is plastic, except the internals, block and the head. The 2.0's most parts are made out of aluminum or metal. Glad I didn't got the 1.4T engine. Even the 2.0D gets 47 MPG highway. Thank you for making other buyers aware of the problems with examples.

DO NOT FLOOR THE GAS PEDAL IN THIS CAR. It will bog down and say the heck with you. He does not know how to drive a car that is electronically controlled with a turbo. If you hold the pedal down about 15%, this car's turbo will spool up and take off and is fast. You do not floor the gas pedal. I do appreciate the turbo explanation because I do not like turbos. Too much maintenance. Also the other tips are helpful. The car is fun and drives amazingly smooth. The repairs are mostly easy but annoying to have repeated issues.

It had the same 1.4 L Turbo..less than a month of purchasing the thing the turbo failed leaking oil directly into the catalytic converter which of course caused that to fail. I couldn’t fix one and not the other so that would have been a $2100 repair!!. Not long after that, the timing chain started rattling meaning that was on its way out as well. That would have been another $1,000 repair. I said screw it. I only paid 2,000 for the car. I ended up just junking the thing. This engine is a German design, thus the need for e-torx. It has much more in common with German cars like Volkswagen than it does with an American Chevy 6 cyl, or small block chevy. There is a whole lot of plastic under the hood, and it is all made in Germany. When it is new, from say 0 to 80,000 miles on the odometer, it is a nice little car, but after 80-100k, nothing but a diagnostic nightmare.
