Thanks my guy! It's 2024 and even eating at home it over budget. I seen my fan wabble for about a year and no clue what is was. Today my truck overheated on my way home and thanks to your video and autozone I now know the problem. A bit late but at least she still runs! Hope I can fix it on my next day of availability. Again thanks from this mechanical uneducated
Just wanted to say THANKS!. Since the job of replacing the water pump was mine, I did notch the shroud to clear upper radiator hose bib. I was able to pull the hole assembly straight out, without damaging radiator. My dealership quoted me $700 for this job. I found that on Amazon, they had two AC Delco water pumps. One from China for $36, and one made in Canada, $88. I used the $88 one and it also came with a nice gasket. This video was a great help!! Thank You!
Great video, just did the water pump on my Trailblazer today. Unfortunately I had to cut the shroud to clear the neck. Well all is done now, in case I replace the shroud, I’ll use the clutch removal technique next time. Thanks for the video
Very helpful just got stranded 2 hours from home and didnt know how to replace this so, im already on the belt asembly. If i didnt see this video i had to call a tow truck. Thanks you guys !! From Puerto Rico...
I have been watching several videos on replacing the water pump for my Trailblazer. I really liked your explanation and tricks; additionally, you are more entertaining. Thanks a lot and congratulations on getting some compensation for your effort, Good Luck.
Thank you so much great video and content...you have had show to us how easy is to make repairs by ourselves in our cars....ir is indeed a valuable help ....Thanks my man ! ..and congrats for your channel ...the best of luck to ya !
Dont forget the Oldsmobile Bravada!! Ours is a 2002. Also a rebadged Trailblazer. Thanks for the video, will save me a ton of time for the water pump. Congrats on monetization!!
trick-- remove 2 of the 8mm fan to clutch bolts, replace with longer bolts (30 mm). Then remove the other 2 bolts. The longer bolts allow enough clearance between the clutch bolt and the engine while keeping keeping them loosely together---- much easier to re-install.
you dont even need longer bolts. remove all but one and have it loose. You can push clutch back and rotate it some to not have to remove shroud at all. pump comes right out and new one goes right back in
Hi, Just wanted to leave you the congrats on the monetization of your channel. Really enjoy your videos and good source for quality content, and good way for me to learn some good technics both for the garage and making videos. Looking forward on seeing some new cool projects coming in! Keep up the good work, Mica Garage
Oh no. That just remind me of the clap lights back in the day. My friend bought one for his bedroom. Big mistake only because he actually had a medical condition called gastritis and used to get lot of gas. Couple of days later he threw the clap light out said it keeps turning on while he is sleeping.
Well explained and detail video with the proper fast forward portions! I like your little light, where did you get it? TEN 👍’s UP to you brother! God bless!
Great video just a tip make these how to videos include the socket size and pinpoint exact bolt locations for the rookies I’ve noticed other how to’s do that hope it brings you some more attention too seeing your monetized congrats man!!
stumbled upon your channel looking for ideas I got my self in a jam with trying to get the fan off the water pump in my 20011 chevey colorado rented the tools from advanced auto the tools are the opened end wrench type now the problem is that the nut is so tight that the wrench is slipping and starting to round off the nut will you have some idea how to go at this with out makeing a big mess even bigger thank you in advance
Great. Thanks for the awesome step by step. Doing this right now on my 02 trailblazer but having issues with the fan clutch nut seems to cranked down so tight I have spent 2 hours trying to remove it and no luck. Is it possible to remove the complete fan & pump in one go
Thats a good question. Ive never tried it that way before. Only suggestion i can make to you is to put the wrench on the fan nut with the belt installed, and wail on it with a BFH. They can be a pain
MorFab Industries I went out and used the loaner tool offered by my parts store. Returned because it was damaging the nut. So I went out and bought a piece of steel bracket that had holes in it bolted one end to the fan pull other end to the alt. Bracket used a wrench with a breaker bar attached no issues. Thanks for the step by step 👍
First-class video. The only improvement I suggest is fleshing out the fan and shroud reinstall. You obviously had to jack around with both to get them back in place and the clutch reattached. There was no commentary and your arm and light blocked what little we could see. It appeared to be much more than simply putting it back the way it came out. Regardless, quality product which will help me change mine.
One tip from when I replaced the water pump on my trailblazer: Get new bolts for the water pump. When I was putting the new pump on, one of the bolts sheared off near the tip. Absolute freaking nightmare. Also, the fan clutch & water pump tend to affect each other: if one goes bad, the vibrations will likely make the other one go bad as well. Sadly a new clutch isn't as cheap as a water pump, but if you're already saving money doing it yourself, you might as well put it to good use and replace the clutch as well.
Also include Buick Ranier and 4.2 is LS and 5.3 is LT. GOOD JOB . But invest in a light bar in your videos. Here in Indiana we go through alot of water pumps
What is the size of the tool you use to free the clutch the big nut I'm having a hard time finding that specific to 2005 Trailblazer V6 LS. / thanks in advance
Nice video, I only wish you specified what tools, wrench/socket sizes you needed to do the job either on a list or during the video as you went through. I prefer to have everything laid out prior to starting a project rather than fumbling about as I go figuring it out on the fly. Also, the "Clap Twice" method of belt installation didn't work for me even after multiple attempts. It did however get me into hot water with the wife as all the lights in the house kept turning on and off from the clapping. In the end, I did it manually using the diagram on the fan shroud. =) Lastly, I personally don't own an air hammer so I had to rent the tool from AutoZone. Gotta remember, many of us DIY guys don't have all those cool gizmo's that you wrenches do who do this for a living have. Your video was very helpful, thanks for putting it together.
So did you drain all the coolant in the radiator and coolant reservoir? And if you did, once the whole thing is finished you just fill the radiator up until it’s completely full and then the coolant tank to its level? I’m gonna replace my water pump in my 02 trailblazer and I just don’t wanna accidentally not have coolant where it needs to be once I start it up
Yes fill the radiator first and let it bleed a bit of air out. Run it, let some more air out. Let it cool, fill the rad to full and then fill the res. I usually overfill the res just a bit to make up for any possible air pockets.
MorFab Industries how did you drain the cooling system completely like the radiator and reservoir and all that? And how much coolant should I have prepared to put back in like a couple gallons?
MorFab Industries thanks man I appreciate the help keep up the good videos, have any other maintenance advice for my trailblazer ? It’s at 245k miles now so I’m doing spark plugs, air filter but I don’t know what else I should do
DasGerbil mine was a bitch too, just got er off. Did you retighten yours as hard core as it was to get off ? Mine was insane, I’m talking home built tool and snipes!
have the same problem. I have replaced the resonator= no change in problem. Replaced the clutch fan which actually was loose BUT did not correct problem. I am in process of replacing the muffler. Vehicle howls and vibrates around 2000-2500 rpm - I let up on the gas and the noise disappears...very annoying
Yeah I hand a ball trying to get that prick too, my buddy had to make a tool to hold the pully end and we ended up using a 😖 crescent wrench and snipe on that bastard!
Am I the only one that watched this video with hopes that I'd get some help on how the hell to break the fan nut loose. I swear I said every cuss word imaginable at least 10 times and made some new ones to the book. I finally got it to break loose after several hours of "fuck it I'll do this shit later" I ended up having no luck with every tool I have well its 2 am and I finally got it loose using a pipe wrench on the fan nut and a pair of vice grips on one of the 1/2(13mm) nuts on the pulley and a 6 foot cheater pipe on one side of the vise grips turning pipe wrench counter clockwise and the hood of my trailblazer to stabilize vise grip\cheater pipe. Good video but unlike this video and the rest I watched before doing this job I don't have the necessary special tools for the removal of the fan shaft. Thanks for the video though. Notched under the neck of radiator with my oscillating tool fan shroud and fan came out with ease didn't have to pry pulley off or fan luckily they both fell right off as soon as both sets of bolts were removed. Not a job for an average guy with even the most common and even uncommon tools handy even with some mechanical enginuity this was pretty damn tough. Preciate your help though brother good looking out
you dont gotta remove the shroud or anything. you undo clutch fan from water pump. loosen the bolts holding clutch to back of the fan and you can push the clutch towards the radiator without hitting it and then have enough room to get water pump out. no hoses undone, fan shroud still mounted. literally unbolt the fan and then loosen clutch bolts and can get pump out. already did it. You taking the bolts off the fan blade to get the shroud out would have allowed you to leave it and get water pump out lol. Its also kinda late to say youre gonna start the engine and make sure fan isnt hitting anything. itd be way too late at that point if it was hitting something. good content overall though. and you used dex cool LOL. Shockingly enough Ive watched some youtubers pour green coolant in these same engines. When it literallys says dex cool on rad cap
I didn't do any of what he did I backed the fan off took the belt off and literally changed the pump I mean realy that easy like 30 minutes with a beer or two
Why are you removing fan from clutch? Objective , getting clearance so shroud will clear upper radiator neck. This is necessary to remove fan, clutch, and shroud all at the same time. This be easier if you remove 2 of the 4 bolts that hold the fan to clutch. Go to autozone and get 2 of the same bolts but an inch longer. Just finger tight, put longer bots in(of course opposite of each other). Remove the other 2 short bolts. So what's the effect? This enables you to push the clutch away from fan blade up to an inch. This creates clearance for shroud to clear upper radiator neck by leaving fan and clutch together. Holding on to fan blade(which is still bolted to clutch) and shroud makes it easier to remove all well as putting back in the reverse order. A job they say take 4 hours can be done in 2. Removing all 4 bolts that hold fan to clutch is retarded and time consuming as well as risking dropping clutch right into radiator causing real unnecessary damage.
Everyone has their own way of doing things. I regularly replace these in this exact way and in the 20 years I have been working on cars I have never damaged a Rad. Your way is most def effective but I bet i can do the job faster without having to run out and get bolts.
I mention the bolts for the novice. Was not including myself lol I had to say something only because you can save yourself so much time leaving fan attached to clutch. If you don't need to go to autozone. Then give it a try. 3/4 to 1" is all you need and fan and clutch come out together holding with one hand and the shroud with other hand. The best part putting it all back is quick and easy. doing it this way savves you 2 hours. all over to bolts allowing fan to be moved away from clutch so shroud can clear the upper neck of radiator. I say this to you out of kindness and hope you give it a try sometime. Respectfully wishing you all the best. Tom( 38 years, my specialty is I am an expert troubleshooter).
