In this video I show my trick for completing a water pump replacement on a Chevy trailblazer 5.3L in under 1 hour. My simple time saving procedure will save you about three hours over the manufacturers process. In my video I mention my video for replacing the pump on a full size pickup and the following link will direct you to that video: • How to Replace Chevy o...

I just changed out my water pump.. my first time. Replaced it in 2 hours. Your tip helped me out a lot. You have saved me $400 in labour cost in exchange of 2 hours of life experience. Much appreciated for the tip

I have always said that my computer is my best tool in my whole shop. Thank you, thank you .. for this video. It saved me so much time. I always watch several videos of the same job before tackling them and your video popped up. I did my job but this was the 4.2L Envoy but I used your process and had the job complete in less than 1 hour. Great tip.. thanks a lot.......

Im curious. Why did u have to use the longer bolts. Couldnt u just use the 2 of the original bolts?

Thanks man! I followed your instructions, never done a water pump before. Total swap with your tips took 1.5 hrs on a 05 tb 5.3l. Longest part of the job was burping the system. I prefer ac delco but needed the truck running asap so went with the carquest lifetime warranty water pump from advance auto, they also stock the M8-1.25 X 30mm bolts that worked perfect on the fan clutch. Dorman part # 981-430D $4.99 for a pack of 6. Thanks for saving me some busted knuckles. I "should have" filled the upper rad hose and water pump with coolant before running, that would have saved some burping time

God damn it I just spent 4 hours doing one of these at work. I finished like 5 minutes ago. Had to take out the radiator and a/c condenser. Great trick for next time. You're a genius.

Great video, I only wished to have seen it before my repair. I already replaced the clutch on my 02 GMC Envoy, the removal process is extremely straight forward and did not have an issue. But, when it was time to install the new clutch it was hell... getting the nut to tread onto the water pump was extremely difficult to say the list. I had to improvise, I used the rubber handle on my clutch removal tool to support the clutch as I was treading it, because my hands were to big to fit between the blades. At the time of the repair I did not have the water pump and by the time I got it, I started dreading the fact that I will have to go thru that process again. I have been procrastinating about installing the new water pump, your tip will definitely improve and speed up the process, thank you...

I hear you, not my favorite job but the trick will save some heartburn. Some guys have been known to cut off part of the fan assembly under the upper radiator hose area to allow for removal. I couldn't get away with that since my customers don't usually like getting charged full price and then finding out I hacked up their car. haha. Good luck and thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video. I was getting ready to change my water pump and thought I bet someone has a trick for it... and bam! Thanks for taking the time to show how to do it. On a separate note.. you people that are nothing but smartasses with the replies... you don't appreciate the time it takes to do a video like this that are made to help who? Us! How about being a little more appreciative? You just can't fix stupid sometimes. :-)

OK, I get the shroud and the pump itself. How do I get the upper radiator thing out? I guess i need special pliers for the other ones, which I'll pick up today. Upper radiator hose? How do I remove it like that?

I put a hole in my fan shroud to fit the stupid radiator hose inlet through, because that thing didn't wanna let go of my fan shroud. Best decision of my life

How do I stop the pulley from moving when trying to get the main nut out?
@kennethbode2017
@kennethbode2017 3 года назад
I managed to get mine out using the original bolts threaded in a few turns but it was tight, I have the 4.2. If I couldn't have got it I would have gone and got some longer bolts but I honestly forgot to stop at parts store so I gave it a shot.

I have a better hack... unscrew the 3 of 4 bolts of the fan and leave one bolt screwed in a few threads... pop the fan of the clutch assembly and I will be enough room the do the water pump... don’t have to take the Shroud off at all

Whats the reason behind putting the longer bolts in.
@ThecardoctorTV
@ThecardoctorTV 8 лет назад
So that the fan can move forward enough to allow removal of the pump without removing the shroud and clutch assembly.
@StreetCarHeadquarters
@StreetCarHeadquarters 8 лет назад
Wait I'm lost. How did you get the fan clutch to spin off the water pump??? All I see is you putting the longer bolts in and then it looks like the fan clutch is already loose!! Help!
@ThecardoctorTV
@ThecardoctorTV 8 лет назад
+Tony Montana It shows me using the special wrench on the threaded end of the clutch to remove it from the pump shaft. Youll likely need the special wrench to do it since its very narrow. I didn't use the spanner tool to hold the pump pulley while removing but just hit the wrench with my hammer in a counter clockwise direction to bust loose the clutch. I just tapped it a few times with a hammer on the install to secure it. Hope this helps.

I'm confused, what do the 2 longer bolts do?
@tobymacbailey
@tobymacbailey 7 лет назад
Just tried to put my fan shroud with fan and fan clutch in without longer bolts. Too tight of a fit... i get it now :) Went to home depot and longer M8 bolts to allow for the fan clutch to sit back a little when sliding all the pieces in. Thanks!
@tobymacbailey
@tobymacbailey 7 лет назад
Just did it. Took about15 minutes to get the fan shroud in place with clutch fan and blade in place with the long bolt trick. My only problem now is that the clutch fan isn't going on the water pump. I turn and turn the bolt and it just pulls right off. i'll watch the video again to see why that is.
@ThecardoctorTV
@ThecardoctorTV 7 лет назад
That doesn't seem right. Did you get it cross threaded? Not sure whats going on there. Hope you get it figured out.

how do you keep a positive attitude with 2 hrs of cloudy daylight a day? it's awesome in the summer when you stumble out of bars at midnight and see the sun. but now, it's rough.

+The Car Doctor how come none of your cars come in dripping salty ice water like here in the midwest? I know they don't use salt, but what about snow? it looks like you have a nice cozy shop to work out of. the weather hasn't been too bad? no below zero yet?
@ThecardoctorTV

It was cold earlier this month but it was 45F today. Seems like the last two years we have been lucky to get trace amounts of snow if any. On the up side no melting snow running down my back while up on the rack.

nice trick. I didn't notice until I started the video it was for the 5.3 trail blazer. I've done a lot of water pumps on the 4.7 trailblazers, and they are always a pain with the fan and shroud. but as I was watching, I thought to myself that the fan shroud and rad should be the same in the 4.7, I wonder if this trick would work, it always seems that getting the shroud pas the upper rad hose spout is always the hardest part.
@ThecardoctorTV
@ThecardoctorTV 8 лет назад
+kenman1717 I have yet to try on the 4.7 but when I get one I will and update this. Thanks for dropping by!

The Car Doctor now that I think about it, is it 4.7l or 4.2l. I thinks its an inline 6. because the Colorado had the 3.5 inline 5.

@ThecardoctorTV
@ThecardoctorTV 6 лет назад
Are you asking me what i think you should do with the bolts? Not sure with the way you frame the question. Might want to work on that
@sabslack
@sabslack 7 лет назад
I'm believing this is some sort of scam. Video doesn't at all show how the nut was loosened to get fan off! I understand the clearance for the longer bolts. But, my pump just turns inside of belt.... so, help and post a video of how it comes loose. Instead of what appears to be a magic trick.
@kenkarish826
@kenkarish826 7 лет назад
I will be doing a video next week showing how to use a air hammer to break the nut lose. It's quick and safe. if you don't have access to air or an air hammer you can also use anything metal with a long handle and a sharp wide edge and a hammer.
