In this video I take you through a bit of the diagnosing this 2006 Chevy 1500 truck that was towed in with a no start no crank condition. It was a pretty simple one but would have burned me if I just took a big fat guess. That is why we test right :)

What would of threw me is the fact that the truck started when you messed with the ignition switch , it started and the history of defective GM ignition switches. It all worked out good - relays, fuses, etc. needed to be all checked. I have been a mechanic for 40+ years and just retired 3 days ago and still enjoy your videos. My 2004 Silverado did the same thing since the day it was new. Occasionally it would not crank but no indications of low battery. Sitting in the cab and trying over and over again would usually result in a start. Replaced Starter relay. No help. Thought about the switch but decided against that. finally put a jumper with a lamp on the starter terminal and ground and waited for it to fail again, which didn't take long found good power all the way to the starter. Replaced the starter. No problems since then, been over a year now. I had this to the dealership four times during warranty and they were no help at all. Great video as always! Thank you!
@mikeolson6843
@mikeolson6843 5 лет назад
I took my 81 Chevy with a 350 diesel (under warranty) to the dealer years ago. The starter would crank and engine would start. But, the starter would not disengage. They said it wasn't happening, and tried to tell me one of the batteries had a weak cell. It only happened occasionally and often when my wife was driving it. Long story short they refused to pull the starter. When I installed new batteries before the next winter it happened more often. So I parked across their bays only entrance and sat in the waiting room. They agreed to pulled the starter and it had a cracked housing. Dealers often don't want to take the time to diagnosis a problem. I get that they have to weigh what they are told by clients, but they should listen to them and consider the possibilities. The fact that they had rewritten the description of the problem I left when I used the night drop was especially irritating. Another dealer changed the fuel injector pump and left a wire dangling because the new pump didn't need it. It took out the fusible link to the glow plug circuit and he told me it had nothing to do with what they worked on. I was a radio repairman in Vietnam and an industrial technician at the time. I am familiar with automotive electrical circuits. I asked him to explain why they left the bare connector and he continued to BS me.

Very very nice and informative video. I like how you really took the time to diagnose the real problem before just throwing parts at it, too many guys do that waste so much time and money, I had a similar issue on my 2001, however, the positive cable on the starter was loose by about 1/16th of an inch, which aint much, but enough to not allow the truck to start!

You are a true pro. Anyone can throw parts at a problem, which is never a good idea, especially when dealing with intermittent ones. My 04 Yukon is driving me crazy right now with an extremely intermittent no crank. Can't get it to happen long enough for a good diagnosis. Already replaced switch, which is a high failure item, and relay. Getting ready to throw a starter out of desperation.

I had 2005 GMC 2500HD with Duramax and the dual factory batteries lasted 9 years. I think the heat wrap they put on them really helps extend the life. I put in new batteries in June 2014 and then traded it in a new RAM 2500HD with Cummins in July. Oh well.

Good diagnosis. Myself from experience, I would of went right to the starter, just for the fact that it seems almost everyone I have done like this, where it won't crank in the crank position and the lights go out in the dash, I always go tap on the starter/solenoid first then test for everything else. Any time I have done a switch is when its messed up and has to be broken in order to turn it so it can be released. But at least now I have seen another techs way of doing it and shared experience. I've been beating my head for weeks about my 2007 Malibu. i thought it was the battery so I replaced the original AC DELCO, just like this truck, but it started acting up a month later then got more frequent so I got a much better battery , the first was from Walmart. And it happened two days later so I got rid of my subwoofer because I thought this was the problem. some days it'll start other days a no go. same exact symptoms.i thought it was only on days. that it was very hot. that's when I first noticed. and my cars black. for a while if it didn't start and I jumped it with another battery it would fire up. I'm at 110000 miles. but I watched every second of this video and I learned so much. I'm convinced my starter is the culprit. unfortunately I'll need to save the few hundred $$ to have a shop fix it since I only have basic tools.but thank you so much. I watched the switch from hell and was convinced it was the ignition switch. but now I know it's the damn starter thank you a million times

South Main Auto Repair: Thank you sir for taking the time to instruct and demonstrate troubleshooting procedures. This starter vid reminds me of my starter wrestling match on a military vehicle years ago(1960's) and the "never assume" lesson I learned. The starter must have weighed close to 60 lbs or more for a V-12 engine, containing slip clutches set to 850 Ft./Lb of torque, designed to spin out(so as not to bend connecting rods) if excessive fuel was on top of a piston. I did NOT check starter or solenoid with batteries BEFORE installation. Once installed and wired-I engaged the starter switch-nothing? All checks were conclusive-the new starter solenoid was defective!! The entire starter had to be replaced(again) as a complete unit down in the Eng. compartment at over 100 deg. F. I still check new starters on a bench or vise BEFORE installation... changing gears...I was invited to climb into the cab of a large city Fire Truck. As an emergency vehicle, the FD could not afford a solenoid failure so the engine had a MANUAL starter switch which was actuated by a rod or shaft that penetrated the floorboard adjacent to the driver much as a gear shift.

That is the biggest 'lost skill' of today. In this specific case Im wondering if it was possible that the no crank was due to the weak battery. We never saw a test of the old starter with a new battery (or bench test of the old starter with bench power supply) and Id be curious to know that result. Thanks

Glad to see I'm not the only one who has difficult maneuvering the starter out

Great video. Teaches how to diagnose a problem. Keep up the good work. As a mechanic who gets paid to fix things, I can see the advantage of replacing the starter as a single unit. For the home mechanic, does it make sense to replace just the solenoid? I suspect the new starters come from China and I don't like Chinese parts. Often the new aftermarket parts have a much shorter life than the remanufactured parts from a few years ago (before China). I know when the voltage gauge on the dash was all over the place many years ago, I took the alternator apart and replaced a few parts (regulator) and it still works perfectly fine.

Glad you worked through the circuit rather than jump straight to the starter. I'm having a similar problem on a Chevy van, and I'd like to rule out ignition or relay BEFORE crawling under the van in subzero weather and snow to check starter. Your video showed me I can check both pretty easily at fuse box.

+Michael Berg Can't you throw a scope on it while it is working to see what the waveform looks like and maybe make a decision based on that?

Tried both a scope and a midtronics tester with an amp clamp nothing off cranking volts were normal, 2 days with it, it never missed a beat even letting it run for an hour several times, he picked it up Friday no charge no parts replaced

I always tap the starter with a hammer to see if it starts working. It can save on towing.
@1stGenDsmTuner
@1stGenDsmTuner 8 лет назад
+jeffscomp can't always do that tho, some starters have magnets you can damage that way.
@gwils7879
@gwils7879 8 лет назад
+jeffscomp Yeah, you want to avoid the hammer bit. Starters have magnets in them, and if it isn't the starter itself, you'll crack them up and destroy the starter. Best to tap it with a piece of wood or a small deadblow hammer or something, not too hard.
@frankenstrat25
@frankenstrat25 8 лет назад
you can hit a starter pretty hard before you break it, trust me, a dead blow or a piece of wood sometimes doesnt work, for example on my truck the starter locked up at work, went under there with my baby hammer and tappity tapped and nothing, it finally cranked over when i gave her the shit. didnt crack my case or anything. if you have any decent knowledge of vehicles you should test everything before you condemn the starter with a hammer. i always carry a test light with me. the joys of being a paranoid mechanic lol
