Chicken Wing POP UP | Surfers Avoid This Mistake

In one of my surf tutorials I went through 7 common ways to stand up, or 7 common pop ups. Some of which are bad, some average and some good. In this tutorial I will speak about one of them in a bit more detail. It is called the 'chicken wing'. It is a common technique coaches use to teach beginner surfers in some parts of the world. It works, but it is not good, especially as you progress and start riding green waves and start riding smaller boards.
In this tutorial I point out that using this technique will cause your knee to drag through the water during the pop up and how it will only cause you to lose balance, slow you down and affect your pop up..
So the best is to push up and lift up your ass as you pop up because it will create space for you to place your back foot down correctly and avoiding the knee dragging through the water. Have a good look at this and let me know your thoughts.

Thanks brother makes a lot of sense, not as flexible as I used to be at 61 with an old skydiving injury L1, L2, L,3 compressed and fractured,. Getting back into it after a 40 year break overseas landlocked so no surf. Been riding a lot of skateboard so legs are fit just loss of flexibility but working on it.

Great advanced instruction on an already used pop up as a beginner. It’s the little tweaks that help and that is a great tweak to my chicken wing pop up as you call it . 🤙🤙

Bringing the back foot first then the front foot gives a bit more time and seems have more control. I will try this way on Saterday! Thank you coach. 😃

Great explanation and footage in the water. ! Is this technique still practical for a shortboard ? Im assuming when its super steep there may not be time enough to do this technique.

Hey mate, thanks for the video. I am having a hard time with the pop up as I’m skinning the top right corner of my right knee and the top left corner of my left knee. Any tips on how to fix?

Hey, what do you mean you’re skinning your knee? Are you chafing the knee and scraping the skin off? Or are you sliding it through the water?

Chicken Wing has nothing to do with what the legs are doing.... It's all about the arms and chest. On a shortboard that pop up with the back leg frist is a big mistake.

Thanks for your feedback. You’re right about the chicken wing..it’s also about getting the ass up. If the ass stays down the knee drags through the water during the chicken wing pop up. Most pro surfers plant their back foot first before the front foot.
