Cody it's shocking and disgraceful that Google / RU-vid haven't paid you anything in the last few years. I really hope you get that sorted out you should making good money from this awesome channel of yours. It's one of the best channels on the whole frickin' platform.
100k views on a ad sense video only makes about 400$ once you hit youtubes thresholds on being able to add ads to your videos its like maybe 3 minutes of set up and youtubes is paying you so there more to this then which he isnt sharing is his channel even consider ad safe is most likely a no considering his older videos are nothing like the ones today
Do you have any idea how many graduates and undergrads of such fields as Sust. Ecology or Sust. Practice etc. which cant find jobs in their fields of study? Myself included... Nobody cares apparently. At least none of the people that make the "big" decisions anyway. Maybe one day. When its too late and we all live in one big toxic reparian buffer zone. Its principally about money, time, and foresight. Very few large corporations seem to acknowledge these variables in a possitive way which yields productive results.
Makes me sick to hear that youtube isn't paying a long time, humble and educational content maker like you, Cody. There needs to be some serious back pay here, the flogs.
I have the extension that brings back the dislike button, but since nobody else by default can see it, the ratio that used to give us a warning doesnt really work so well. They need to bring it back, it was the only warning to us to immdiately back out of a video before watching or treading lightly before hand.
i saw it as well I'm no expert, but i think it is fake, the head seems kinda weird. (eyes and teeth) also it looks partially buried in the sand, but real snakes might do that to themselves as well, idk

Yes thank you I thought no one noticed that diamond back I had to do a double take. I love snake and havé training on how to handle venomous snakes but I worry about other people not as good at spotting them in the wild
@@klaytonhusbands3078 I cant stand snakes, lack of legs just gives me the uncanny valley feeling, but I grew up on the woods pretty much and over time you get good at noticing snake shaped things. Sometimes they are actually snakes, other times just a weird looking stick
At this point, I can't decide if Cody's levelled up with his editing and composition skills, or if he's just hired a look-alike to play the role of RoboCody.
In industry we use 'slide plates' made of teflon or HDPE riding on thin polished stainless steel to allow piping systems to move due to thermal expansion. Since the tanks are already HDPE, polished stainless sheet on the wood runners may be a good enough future solution, there would be much less friction than the wood. We have immense loads on surprisingly small bearing areas without binding. Mounting a sump centrally would also mitigate the issue, but complicate draining.
Not every video has to be a major project, just seeing you and RoboCody and the critters and the day to day is satisfying. It's good to know ChickenHole Base is still out there moving along. It was nice to see the landscape looking a bit more verdant than last time.
Adding a rubber flap to the tank with a silicone adhesive would probably solve the vapour barrier issue, and keep the coefficient of expansion of the seal somewhere near that of the poly tank
i was confused how you did the robo cody scene so flawlessly, until i realized it wasn't actually an edited scene like previous ones. but infact a real different person. nice
To weatherproof the roller gap and have flex you can use the L shaped garage door seals from Homedepot (or wherever). Foam-rubber, extremely durable, resist UV well, etc. It's actually really handy stuff for misc projects.
I used that when I put in a telephone pole split down the center as a door step for my friends barn. Worked very well both at keeping dust from blowing in and keeping water out in heavy rains.
Wood mostly expands an contract due to humidity. Its like 7 % horizontal to the grain and 0.1-0.5 with the grain. Plastic on the other hand is affected by heat. I did construct some furniture with 20 metres (i dunno, 60 ish feet) long plastic parts, and we had to make them like 5 cm longer, otherwise they would shrink to mutch down when it gets cold.
@@koukouzee2923 a second or two after it breezed by the screen my brain finally processed the input and suggested that it was a deliberate orientation of strange ornate Rocks That Do Not Belong Here, and I went back to pause-game my way to it to see if Cody was messing with me and OH HOLY EXPLETIVE HE WAS BUT NOT THE WAY I THOUGHT.
I remembered watching the chicken hole series 3 years ago and suddenly thought about it today. I’m glad you’re still on it, I loved this series!! I never see your videos in my feed even though I’m subscribed I was worried you weren’t making videos anymore :(
Love the cactus planting and hope to see more, I really think you can turn your property into something special! I also hope you look into permaculture or terraforming projects to make the "martian habitat" a little more human friendly. Swales and water collection can go a long way!
Its amazing how much sheer effort and work Cody has put into this project. Its almost as amazing as the fact that RU-vid won't pay him for it??? The man has 2.13 MILLION subscribers. Cody's Lab is as a channel is one of the greatest RU-vid channels to ever grace the website and has continued to produce high level and consistently interesting videos. I hope something changes soon. I never get more excited to see a new video from a subscription than from Cody'Lab no matter how long it takes him to post or how little progress he makes in the video. I will never not watch it. N e v e r.
Those staple pipes probably aren't gonna work. it might be easier to install the pipes on Rebar/Metal rods through the wood, with bearings to get an easy roll. also you might want to put some rubber caps or something on those pipes. once you put a lot of weight on those pipes they might start to misshapen or even damage the habitat as it it expands and contracts.
I was going to comment something similar. The sharp ends of the pipe will eventually cut through the plastic, with all the movement. Maybe cover them with some kind of rubber hose.
You wont get away with an air tube thanks to frictional losses. You'd be looking at 3" diameter or greater for reasonable flow but pressure will still be very very low. That said, attached to a greenhouse with a similar fresh air draw, downhill, buried in the ground and you've got geothermal cooling pipes. A well established principle. If you need to keep things sealed off you could just pass the pipe through the greenhouse and attach a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger design will be rough due to the low pressure but it's certainly doable. Think a large automotive intercooler.
Glad to see that Cody is doing better. Sorry to hear about his friend’s antenna malfunction. Good thing he had a reflector dish available but I hope the antenna repairs happen quickly. 😂
What I like about the chicken hole base is that every episode presents a problem, an explanation on why the problem is happening and then a possible solution with a cliffhanger on if it worked or not
I just discovered the Chickenhole Base series, time to binge all of them. Thanks for uploading despite not getting a dime for it and I hope it gets resolved soon
Yay! Another Video! Would be awesome to see those rollers roll. If some don't, I would take a book out of my skateboarding days and apply wax to the area you want with less friction.
Thanks for the inspiration! I've been wanting to plant some cactus in my yard for a while, and this might have been the final inspiration I needed. Absolutely love cactus blossoms.
I come specifically to Cody'sLab when I'm extremely depressed. It's been many years. Here I am again. Of course I still have watched in the interim, but once again, I'm binging now.
Google has gotten sooooo greedy and ruined things for creators on the platform. I hear the same thing from a ton of people on channels I subscribe to. Keep up the fight and always enjoy seeing an upload from Cody's Lab.
I opted to not have ads on my videos just for this reason because my channel isn't large enough, yet they still have ads anyways and yet I have no control over it. I still don't get paid regardless. What's up with that?
@@RingingResonance They decided to start running ads on all channels a number of years back. It's so they can make them sweet benjamins 🤑 like how they're raising YT premium rates, and soon they will start blocking people who use ad blockers.
Instead of a sump, you could make a wicking system. Install slotted irrigation pipe with a sock and cover with sand. You could make multiple layers of pipe+sand. Put a pipe into your irrigation pipe to fill the bottom with water. Then put a layer of landscape fabric, to prevent plant material from getting into the sand. On top of that put in your soil as deep as your plants need. Then the water will wick up the sand to the soil and draw the root down as it dries out. I do this with pots and I can get over a gallon of water into the bottom of a large pot.
I always get excited when I see one of these! Thanks for continuing to make fantastic content Cody. You’re awesome and I hope you keep doing what you’re doing
It is utterly disgraceful that RU-vid have not paid you for so long! I haven't any spare money to donate, only kind words, hope you're doing well, Cody, and that all this gets straightened out
For the piping/suction system, I reckon just having a larger hose running up the mountain would help. It'd probably help to wind it around some to increase surface area with the sun. More heat. Maybe put some insulating underneath to minimise heat loss. Have it go from a smaller radius near the ends to a larger radius in the middle too.
Thank you for another update on the bees ❤️ I hope they're enjoying their summer vacation Lol I hope the furball feels better soon ❤️ Stay safe, stay awesome, and have fun!!!
I love the "reflector dish for communications" much better than the "cone of shame," so it's officially changed. Also, if YT needs verification, I can vouch for the fact that you kept me sane during covid lockdown and have been fun to share with my students. If you need letters, just let us know. YT should pay up with interest. Much love from broiling Central Valley, CA! 💚✌️😎🌵🐈 Ps. You should plant some nopales, aloe, and agave, as well. And, are there any local cactus varieties? PPS I believe a racoon or a large bird took your offering, which is totally acceptable under the Rules for Offerings to the Gods, Sect. 3, para. 2. 😸
2:35 how does everyone manage to get such beautiful compost ? Last time I tried some chicken droppings chopped up weeds and used up mushroom blocks It has been 3 months and it's decomposing but looks kinda yellow not black
Video idea for you. Attach a bunch on strong neodymium magnets to the bottom of your car low enough to pull things off the ground as you drive by. Drive on the freeway and show us what you find. See which magnetic metals you pick up.
Hey cody, long time watcher here, your cacti look great, if you need another flowering plant for your bees to enjoy which is pretty hardy to dry climate and can resist frost i'd suggest Thymus serpyllum, also known as Breckland thyme, Breckland wild thyme, wild thyme, creeping thyme, or elfin thyme as the name suggests its a kind of thyme but it doesn't get very tall but it covers the ground like grass and has a lovely purple color when flowering apparently it doesn't need that much water and i'd think it would survive the climate where you're from also, your bees would get a nice tasty snack out of it
When installing spouting along house roofs, you must consider the thermal expansion and put fittings in that mitigate its affect. It's not so much that theres a large difference, more so that even a small difference in coefficients compiles over a long distance to add up to a significant gap.
If you want to produce more videos but are worried about the quality of experiments.. don't Cody. We'd gladly watch you do chores around that base or errands around the house. Don't feel obligated to only make a video when you got experiments to show us. Those are great but you are what your fans are here to see. Hope you see this and it helps with the pressure you feel to create experiments for us.
I'll be honest, I've not been watching a lot of cody videos, not because youtube isn't recommending them, it's just not been speaking to me. There's some sort of X factor the old videos had, and i think it was similar to what NileRed has.
Plastic does indeed have dramatic expansion in heat; I sit at a shop bench all day and it has a plastic top and you can can always tell it's getting hot because it starts to warp dramatically. I aught to cut some channels along the bolts to allow it to expand and contact without the warping. I recall an episode of the Mythbusters where they had trouble getting a super long toy car track to work because it kept expanding in the sun and forming large bumps.
the black cable isn't producing a draft because it would need constant temperature changes, once it's received full sun and the air inside is fully expanded any draft will end, expansion will also happen in both directions - both ends of the cable will have an outward draft until equilibrium when warming up and an inward draft until equilibrium when cooling
You can put the aluminum on the tanks, you just need to attach it with slots instead of holes so the tank can still expand and contract. Just like how vinyl siding is attached.
Change in the air pressure would be very subtle and would also be on both end so unless you can make it more preferable to the water vapour to climb up, it will always trickle down back to the bottom. I'd recommend using lenses/mirrors at the bottom of the pipe to keep the temperature higher than the top end. That way the vapour goes up. Another solution would be to use paint. Darker at the bottom and lighter as you go up. It will server the same purpose and heat the pipe unevenly throughout its length, creating the stream you are looking for. Good luck 😊
Been a viewer for a few years now, glad to see you're still at it. Since your hosepipe up the hill seems to be an issue, I'm a welder, and we often use a flow gauge to diagnose issues with gas lines and O-rings in equipment. Don't know if theyd detect flow as low as you'd require, but that was my first thought. Keep on keeping on dude, and give that cat a pat for me! Cheers
Draw a string thrrough the black tubing. Keep the bottom end submerged. The capilary force will draw water up to the top of the hill. The tube will prevent it all from evapoating on the way up.
With the hose you should be able to build a solar water heater that could transport water up the hill. You’d have to have a sealed container at the top and a cold return line (buried). To get water out the top seal off both ends and it will pressurise then have a pressure relief valve at the top.
