If you are looking for a TV series that really captures the impact of childhood trauma, then you might look no further than the award-winning Netflix mini-series, starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, called Beef. Beef is a dark and exhilarating story of two strangers’ journey through their own trauma and hardships after their worlds collide through an incident of road rage. As the series progresses and story unfolds, we, the audience, become privy to more and more information from their backstories that allow our ill-informed judgements to be challenged regarding who these people are and why they’re acting a fool.
In this episode of Narrative Breakdown, licensed therapist, Joshua Nichols, is going to give his take on the series as whole, but will mores specifically focus on two particular scenes from episode 7 and 8 regarding the character Amy Lau played by Ali Wong. Josh will discuss:
- The impact of words on kids
- Other cultural influences that exacerbate trauma
- A child’s desire to take care of their parents
- The reality of unconditional love
Thanks for tuning in. Please let us know if there are any movies, shows, books, podcasts, etc. that you would like to be featured on The Narrative Breakdown.
