While I haven't been to China in many years now, probably 15 years or so, I well recall an incident where, staying with my host family, the father had just bought a new motorcycle and had left it outside his house. A few hours later, there was a commotion outside as one of the neighbors had spotted a guy trying to hotwire the bike. Pretty soon a whole crowd had gathered round the guy, and nobody recognized him, he was apparently a transient worker. They were asking him why, if it was really his bike, he was hotwiring it. When the actual owner finally came along and everybody recognized him and they could finally be sure that a crime was in commission, they quite literally ran the guy out of town - he took off running and the mob of people chased after him til he was outside the city limits. The interesting thing about this is that there was a police station just two blocks up the road from where this started. Not one single person bothered to go fetch the police. They all understood the police were only there to get after political/ideological crimes, and didn't care about any other types of crimes. Nope, the community has to police itself. And they do. Of course, that was a fairly small town where people do know their neighbors well and so that sort of thing still works, and good for them for looking out for each other. And shame on the police for not being willing to deal with actual real crimes like that.

That's not a fake cop, it's a modern scarecrow.😀

Reminds me of the summer 2008 Olympics where the roads to the games stadiums were lined with light poles topped with small wind power turbines. The wind turbines weren't producing power, they were actually getting power from the grid to spin.

My weirdest experience was in 2005 we took a sleeper train from Beijing to ZhengZhou and the luggage scanner to board the train was FAKE; half the people were scanning their luggage and the other half just walked around the scanner with their luggage.

This seems surreal especially when not too long ago you talked about all these different Chinese police branch offices being opened in other countries around the world during your china show, and yet when it comes to the safety of their own citizen it almost feels like it's just of secondary importance. Thank you for bringing such an interesting topic that otherwise would have never come out of china by itself.

That poor baby, it breaks my heart. I had a bad habit of allowing my adhd to influence me into watching videos that were definitely not good for me when I was younger.

I remember seeing robotic policemen over 30 years ago in Japan. They were dressed in a real uniform and moved an arm up and down whilst holding an illuminated baton. They looked real even from a short distance and were placed at dangerous hot spots to slow down traffic and did the job well.

Wait one friggen minute. Women chained to the wall? WTF.

Poor kiddo, hope his life got better but I can't help to feel like the police didn't follow through much.

That shit happens here in the Philippines too. I didn't know how kids worked, so I never questioned their eerie calmness. Sometimes, they even have another, older child that actually goes around to beg directly. It's usually a girl, and it's horrifying to think about just what their pleading tones truly meant.
