Watch my Chinese wife try the hottest pepper in the world! - She didn't have a good time!
• Chinese Girl Tries Hot...
Hey Laowinners!
My Chinese wife has heard of Amish people before, but she never knew she would have a chance to visit them at some point. She was fascinated by their way of life, and how they don't use technology, speak a language other than English, and learned that not everything she knew about Amish country was true. We drove 700 miles to Amish country in Ohio to learn and film everything that we could, and ended up even getting an Amish man to agree to an interview in a horse drawn buggy.

There's one video where 200 Amish men pick up a barn to move it across the property, another where 80 Amish men move an entire house, it's crazy. Could you imagine the response you would get if you asked your neighbors to help you move your house to the other side of your property?

I live in a rural area in upstate New York with a large Amish community who own fairly large horse powered farms. They are quiet hard workers and people living in the area often hire them for they're excellent carpentry skills. The children are self taught in small Amish schools and most are multi lingualed speaking English and both traditional German and "new" German. They are all financially well of from selling their hand made furniture, carpenter services, produce, baked goods and cheese. They spend very little money because they are self sufficient and most of their money goes into supporting their community. Best neighbors in the world.

I have Amish family directly from Germany. They speak such a peculiar dialect, I am not sure you would understand them. It is even more different than some of the famous dialects like Swabian. They’re hardworking, their businesses have low overhead so they hardly ever fail, they sell artisanal and therefore unique and premium priced goods, they’re family owned and operated, they pay lower taxes, live modestly, buy a lot of property, they take care of their elders so they don’t dwindle family legacies on pricey assisted living or hospital stays...I suspect the Amish are quietly loaded. They see us whip around their carriages in a $35k BMW like we’re hot shit and think ‘pft, I own 180 acres of land’. People bitch and moan about how difficult making it in America is today, meanwhile they have a $1200 iPhone X and are wearing $400 Jordan’s. If you don’t care about being flashy, are willing to work hard, and want to build wealth, do what they do and within a few generations your family will be well-off, no degree or connections required. Just a willingness to live a bit modest and make some sacrifices. Save money and keep buying land and passing it down to the next generation.
@KoinzellGaming
@KoinzellGaming 5 лет назад
@@StufiBuy Wealth is built over making conscious decisions based on practicality, not vanity and comfort. Like you said buying expensive stuff for vanity is a conscious decision to not actually save money and those decisions snowball, from small bad decisions they will add up into an avalanche of financial insecurity. The thing again is that in their culture, they have a foundation to not splurge their money pointlessly. If they want something, they make it. If they have left over money they invest it into an item that will retain value to at least some extent (land).
@StufiBuy
@StufiBuy 5 лет назад
@KoinZell you also have to go where the jobs are and find where the cheap properties are located. If one stays in their hometown or city in spite of the fact that the jobs left 35 years ago then that’d be not pursuing opportunities. Its nice to set roots and live around family and community, exciting culture and the urbane metropolises that it inhabits; god bless you but don’t cry poor to me. As you said you make a choice, every decision and every second is a trade-off. In the past a whole family or even a whole community would pick up and leave to pursue wealth. You can go to nearly any state and buy land cheap, you can go to nearly any major city and find land cheap within a 40-50 minute drive outside of it. I used to live a 40 minute drive outside of the Bronx; 60+ acre lots, 4-5 bedroom farmhouses often with multiple barns, lakes, and streams included with property for $60-$80K. They may need some cosmetic work, nothing that can’t be done with RU-vid ‘how to’ videos and your own two hands, but they’ll have heat, running water and electricity.

Just like anywhere - there are good people and bad.... generally Amish are decent people and polite - but they are a very circumspect people, difficult to get "in" with them... once you show you are polite and respectful, they'll be same, if not, you'll get the "we'll see once..." which is them saying "no way in hell", but they are nice about it. They'll just ignore you if you piss them off, social shunning, which is their way. Overall, good hard working people and good to deal with.

The Amish are a year round renaissance festival. Except, instead of the 15th century they chose the 19th. It’s a money making scheme as much as a religious and social construct. It’s the polar opposite of a hippie commune with the same result. It’s not hard to understand why they live the way they do. They are proud of it and they get to enjoy snippets of modern life in the form of materials technology and communication to some extent.

The Amish are polite and are taught never to gossip. I have a few family history books which includes a lot of Amish family members and they outright refuse to write descriptions about their family members because of this rule. If you look at them, the women wear dresses all the way to their ankles, they wear veils, they do not show any part of their body, and the men do as well with plain overalls, suspenders, beards, and turtlenecks. The more polite and respectful ones probably did not want to say anything about her dress. But they most definitely noticed and observed it and probably silently passed judgement.

Vivi has always seemed like a lovely person and it really shows in this video. It was nice to see her so happy. Enjoyed watching the conversation with the old man in the cart, no prejudice, just mutual acceptance. Personally I think modern technology can be of great value when used wisely, but I do find that peace and quiet in the beautiful Amish community very appealing.

They paid my way through high school, (private). I say I was a good boy and help me keep out of trouble by listening to their religion (beliefs). I can say that I'm very glad that I was amongst the Mennonites and not Catholics or Lutherans. This Mennonite group that I belong to was more conservatively minded, not participate in politics, or having TVs in their homes or going to movies. i come from southern germany and speak the palatinate dialect. it is really similar to Pennsylvania Dutch. the "gude morje" that he said is pretty much the same as i would say "good morning" in palatinate dialect. amish country feels a little like home i guess! :P

Would palatinate differ from glottal, then? As in, where within the mouth the stops and glides are formed?

"God morgon" in Swedish. As a native speaker of Swedish, and ability to speak simple and incorrect German, it probably wouldn't take too long before I could chat with the Amish in their language if I stayed with them. :-) Low German is closer to Swedish than what high German is. I'd think that anyone being able to speak Afrikaans ("South African Dutch") would feel right at home -- a qualified guess because not only is it a form of Dutch, but it has probably changed less than Dutch.

Really great commentary and perspective coming from someone whose family strived to escape the pastural lifestyle. Also given Vivi's upbringing being taught the religion was bad to see folks whose lives revolve around it, it was really interesting to watch how uncomfortable she was, not as funny or entertaining, but really interesting from her programming (as many people raised from left are). I'm sure that the woman was used to getting those constant questions and contestations more than Vivi realized.

@Steve Burns I believe it. Have been to some Amish areas, and they have ways to deal with modern times without compromising on their beliefs too much. I went to LaGrange, IN. last summer to pick up a new wagon tongue with a friend, and the Amish shop had no 'grid' electricity, but did have a small portable generator running to provide enough power for what, I wasn't sure. There were no lights in the shop, but they did have gas lights for when it got dark. We stopped at an Amish store, and they had battery operated lights, and brighter gas lights. Some of the items on the shelves were battery pack powered lanterns. The battery packs were the type used with power tools, like Dewalt, Mikita, MIlwaukee, etc.
@dkeith45
@dkeith45 5 лет назад
@J G LOL. Ofc, all religious practices are FOS. But as for the Amish, they try to keep things as simple as they can. It's difficult to explain to someone who hasn't dealt with them before, or does not know any current or ex-Amish. When I lived in Texas, I knew several ex Amish, which were the ones that left after their 'rumspringa'. But they didn't stray too far from the fold, instead joining Mennonite churches which are very closely related to the Amish and share many of their practices.
@dkeith45
@dkeith45 5 лет назад
@J G Thx! I'll read the blog soon. Yes, the Amish have problems like any other people. They are no more 'good' than the average Christian. According to the ex-Amish I knew in Texas, there are Amish drunks, wife beaters, adulterers, and just general POS's, same as any other humans or religions, they just don't drive cars and wear old fashioned clothes etc. A lot depends on the area and the leaders. But one gal I knew, Julianna Bontrager (now Bender as far as I know), when she married Philip Bender, she invited me and others from the ranch in Texas where we'd all met, to the wedding in Nappanee, IN. I was surprised to see so many Amish at the wedding, and the ceremony was conducted by two pastors, one Amish, who sang the sermon in High German, and a Mennonite pastor who did it in English. Unlike what I'd heard prior, that when you leave the Amish, you are shunned, Julianna's family had not disowned her or shunned her when she left the church, to join a Mennonite church and get involved in the mission field. She said she still was able to visit her Amish family. EDIT: I read the blog. What I imagine is up with Torah, is there must not be a central organization for the Amish. So each church or group does their own thing? Because the Indiana Amish that I knew, did not have the bad experiences that Torah did, and they did get to test the world during their 'rumspringa' and then choose to stay and join the Amish church, or go out into the world of the 'English'. A few years back, there was a story in the news of an Amish group, I think in Ohio? That was attacking other Amish groups, and tackling some of the men and cutting their beards off. Some leaders went to jail for it. So, there are bad ppl all over. And again, the Amish are no better or worse than the average Christian.
