Artic World Cup, a game that accidentally became infamous because US Gold decided to re-release it at full price with a different name for the 1986 World Cup!
But back in 1984 this was one of the few football games on the market. Released on the Spectrum, C64, C16 and Amstrad CPC, it's a depiction of a knock out cup tournament (no group stages!).
I thought it was time to go back and take a look at this early soccer title and see if it deserves to be as derided as it is.
All footage, as ever, from real hardware. Especially the C16. Sorry about that but my PSU is being looked at!
And see the top pinned comment before commenting about the 64 version of the US Gold game.

Pedant alert. There’s confusion over the 64 version. What Chinny is playing is Artic World Cup Football. On the 64 that game wasn’t re released as US Gold’s World Cup Carnival. What was re released was Artic World Cup that came out a year later, had much bigger sprites and continuous music. Only for the 64 mind. The other versions seemed to have re released the earlier game.

That one had World Cup II on the inlay but then said World Cup on the title screen (just to add to the confusion). It had a version of The Chrysanthemum by Scott Joplin that played during the game and huge chunky sprites. The Artic version had advertising hoardings on the side of the pitch for Boots, John Menzies, Fuji, WH Smith, Diet Coke and Artic. The US Gold World Cup Carnival one had just US Gold and Mexico 86.

Be thankful you don't have to hear the "music" on the C64 version here. Depending on the randomisation, you would normally get appallingly bad versions of Nice One Cyril (Tottenham), I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles (West Ham) or Blue Is The Colour (Chelsea) - which at least are football related but they are so bad, you wish they hadn't have bothered. Of course John Prince and Donald Campbell went on to form an infamous developer - Tiertex no less!

Very forward thinking to feature the women's teams on the C64.

I, thankfully, don't think I have ever played this. If I had I think it would have haunted me to this day.

I will sadly ALWAYS remember Artic World Cup due to it being on Now Games 2, A collection that I received the same Christmas I got My 48+ FIVE FANTASTIC GAMES! Airwolf! Chuckie Egg 2! Cauldron! Tir Na Nog! and... this. On the bright side, you didn't have to shoot through a near impossible automatically healing wall. Imagine my surprise to see the hell freeze over again the next year.

Every compilation has to have one terrible game unless it was by Beau Jolly in which case you'd get 1 good but ancient game.

If you fancy playing another diabolical football game, Super Soccer on the speccy takes some beating. It provided me and my brother many hours of entertainment, laughing at its buggy nature (goalkeepers floating off into space being a highlight)

Please do a video on World Cup Carnival! I remember seeing it in Boots in its seductive big box packaging one afternoon during the school holidays and immediately withdrawing my pocket money to buy it. I also bought Sinclair User that day and remember sitting on the bus home next to my mum reading a one star review of the thing I'd just spent all my money on. A very disappointing bus ride home! It's still a vivid memory. As I recall it had a training mode which was match day esque, perhaps that was a fragment of the game they'd intended to release. Anyway, after a couple of minutes playing the Artic game I went back to Match Day, about 7 or 8 quid lighter. There was a nice poster and sew on badge/patch as I recall. But very much a lesson about cynical marketing. Bastards. I'm still sore.

_World Cup_ is one of the earliest games I remember playing on the ZX Spectrum with one of my younger brothers, before my parents bought an Amstrad CPC. We didn't own any other football games at the time, so we didn't really have any idea how bad it is, but I remember playing it quite a lot. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to my parents for subjecting them to the cacophony of so-called "music" for countless hours. As to whether _Glen Hoddle Soccer_ [sic] is worse than _World Cup,_ my answer to that is, "Yes" - and are you really winning 27-0 in _Glen Hoddle Soccer?_ Finally, I laughed at seeing Scotland being announced as world champions at 16:07 - very realistic there!

i misread that at first as Arctic World Cup. Well Fifa are intent on taking taking the world cup to the worst places on earth, Maybe it's an option to think about :)

Bizarre. I had the Artic release on the Spectrum and at the time seem to remember enjoying it (at least until I saw Match Day). But this is just chronic. And that beeper music 😅 The magazines were incredibly brutal about the US Gold release. Deservedly so. Still reckon Imagine's Super Soccer was easily the worst footy game on the Spectrum.

Oddly, having been at school in a non-football area, this was the first soccer game I played, so have a strange nostalgia for it. It is still crap.

Re-releasing the same football game over and over again with minor changes and charging more money. That will never catch on. 😂

Horrible. But a collectors item, the C16 and CPC "look" the best.
@merman1974
@merman1974 8 месяцев назад
Technically the C16 doesn't have sprites - everything is done with characters, although that is often referred to as "software sprites" rather than hardware sprites. The knock-kneed C64 players are hilarious, and there is no doubt that International Soccer was better; even the re-released CRL version from 1987 was better value than this. The Spectrum version should be sent to Tipperary and then a deep hole dug for it, covered in concrete and never played again. The lack of pitch markings and the masking are horrible. The Amstrad players are better proportioned but still look deformed. All versions seem to suffer from overpowered computer goalkeepers too. A true nightmare game on all formats.
