Press conferences don't give you nearly enough time you want to chat with a filmmaker. When Shock wrapped The Ward press event, well, we wanted to talk a bit more with director John Carpenter. Of course, it didn't help that the conference got hijacked by press members who wanted to talk with star Amber Heard more about Playboy.
A few weeks later, we caught up to the main man at his office in Hollywood. And, as usual, he was game to talk about anything. Carpenter opens up about the industry, his fellow directors (and the new blood), horror fatigue, upcoming projects and whether he has anything left to say through the craft of filmmaking anymore. Carpenter strikes me as the type of man who after talking to him and telling him how much his films mean to you. He stays silent, stands up and says "I'm gonna take a shit..." and walks out.

Damn, I felt that story of Cronenberg not looking at him despite being old friends. Damn.

I don't know where Cronenberg gets off, his last good movie was History of Violence, has produced anything noteworthy since.
@snakes6248
@snakes6248 2 года назад
Might be professional jealousy on Cronenberg's part. His movies have gotten more critical respect, but John Carpenter's movies have made a larger impact on popular culture.
@lamentate07
@lamentate07 Год назад
@@snakes6248 Carpenter is also more skilled as a formalist/stylist as well. Superior use of visual language.

Idk it seems to me that Cronenberg isn’t full of himself or at least isn’t any more full of himself than Carpenter. There’s an interview with Carpenter from the 70s where he says Altmans a bad filmmaker and Spielberg and Lucas are overrated. So he’s clearly got a bit of an ego himself.

I'm surprised that "The Thing" was a box office failure compared to a film like "Scanners" from Cronenberg. That movie is just as graphic and yet I didn't hear that much criticism about it.

Was that John Carpenter's home/office? Thanks for posting this I'm always interested on what John Carpenter is up to.
@Theomite
@Theomite 10 месяцев назад
Carpenter has been in semi-seclusion at his home in San Marino for the better part of 20 years. He does virtually every interview there because, like Kubrick, he prefers to be home. He moved there shortly after THE FOG because he fell in love with the geography. I also think that he has early stage emphysema because he's been smoking for roughly 50+ years, and unfiltered ones for roughly half of that, so I think traveling is really hard on him physically.
@nowaytowalmart67
@nowaytowalmart67 2 месяца назад
@@TheomiteJohn went through bad health in 2015 and quit smoking then but got much better physically. That was his home office though haha I met him in 2015 when he was just getting better (undisclosed illness) and he was the nicest guy.
@Theomite
@Theomite 10 месяцев назад
I wonder if John had never started smoking if things might've been different around '01. I think his waning health, which has become very visible in the last 20 years, may have had something to do with being burned out.

After coming from a separate interview of his where he says he has no idea what it means that he has a "cult" film or cult following it's funny that this interview starts off with saying Ghosts on Mars is a great cult film and John just ignores that comment.
@scottjo63
@scottjo63 10 лет назад
Hey that's Norman Reedus in another zombie thing and Zombie Apocalypse had Ken Foree (original Dawn Of The Dead) in it and it wasn't that bad complete with a reference or 2 to Dawn. (about malls not being the perfect place to be safe and a not so direct quote of no more room in hell but when hell overflows).

Erick Von Witz The two films you mentioned aren't even Cronenberg's best. I love John Carpenter, but Cronenberg has a much greater and more consistent body of work.
@TheDensley7
@TheDensley7 9 лет назад
Erick Von Witz I have to disagree. As I say, I love John Carpenter, but my man's gotta be Cronenberg. Mind you, that's bad of him to snub John, considering how far back they go.
@cfx5000
@cfx5000 9 лет назад
TheDensley7 Consider the fact that Carpenter opened the doors for all people like Cronenberg, Hooper, Craven, etc. etc. Carpenter WAS the late 70's early 80's. The God of that genre.
@TheDensley7
@TheDensley7 9 лет назад
cfx5000 What? Wes Craven's first movie came out in 1973, before Carpenter. Hooper was making films before Carpenter, and so w as Cronenberg. Last House was 72, actually.

Nope, not an early riser. One thing I've heard him say in interviews is that he disliked having to get up early and work such a grinding schedule while film-making.

12:10 I think they SHOULD'VE let Halloween die imo... reason why is NOW if you see the remakes or sequels, you KNOW coming into it that hes NOT going to die... you're basically going to see people get butchered and murdered... It lost my interest and i feel that they SHOULD'VE stopped after 2 and let Michael die in that fire, and went with John's original idea of using the name but having a different concept every year with the title...
@shanenolan085
@shanenolan085 5 месяцев назад
14:42 He shares my sentiment, but he doesn't SAY the Halloween series lol I know earlier in the video he says he's ALL FOR Halloween remakes and sequels, BUT... what he says also sums up the Halloween franchise 💯💯🎃🎃

Looking back at this lol it’s funny you guys talking junk about world war z which imo and others is a good movie and then the walking dead which turned out to be one of the best shows going to finish with pretty much 12 seasons 2 spin-off shows and 2 movies , those remarks didn’t age well lmao also no “the thing “ talk smh
