Nice Talk, i love knives since my 5 years... I had plenty of cheap shits etc... then i started with family tradition... blacksmithing, i am making my own knives, every day means practice... i started with sharpening few days ago and i am able to make razor sharp knive in 10 to 15 minutes, i shaved my arms and legs (blood included) :D Thanks for help, advice and fun :) I prefer skandi knives, because they look more angry for me than konvex.

I get a lot of entertainment with you two. The thrills of learning and discussion and the entertaining aspect of producing watchable shows. The videos are flawless and Im eager when I see your video presented to watch. I like your opening music and scenes even. My choice for a knife would be Bark River Gunny hunter in Elmax with white C Tek, if I could get one. Maybe they will do a fill-in run of tjem and I can order. I heard they are 0.135" inches thick on tje spine. I like thin, slicey knives. Today I first heard of Fox River EXT-1 IN ELMAX LT 0.118" INCHES ON THE SPINE! Perfection, cause the regular is a friggen giant scalpel!

Great new videos guys! I'm also a big Fallkniven fan. The pro series are indeed great. Also, I love the NL series. They're just sublime to hold and to use and look at. I've been darkening the leather handles with a beeswax mix and they look stunning. Under close scrutiny these fallknivens, IMO, are as good or better than most custom knives...some costing thousands of dollars...so they are good value in that context. Not sure how accurate, but I heard that Peter at Fallkniven likes to carry the NL1 Thor into the Swedish wilderness!!!

Great video guys. Totally agree about your point on folding knives, they have their place but in no way replace a fixed blade out bush. Why trust a knife thats already broken? I often use a spyderco for EDC but it gets left behind for a Mora anyday of the week when outdoors. Those Fallkniven Pro knives are so shiny, ive never heard of the Steel interesting, the next knife upgrade I think will be Bark River. Cheers from Australia

What is a good way to determine/learn what steels to go with for a survival knife/bushcraft I've got a few model moras I love them besides they don't all have a 90* edge on spine. But I'm looking for a one tool knife option long term that is great for the majority of tasks I know there is no such thing as the perfect knife that does it all but I would rather get a really quality one next versus 10 more okay quality...... I hate to admit it but my esse I had much higher hopes for but just striking a ferro rod on the grinned spine it gets nicks after just a few strikes.. may be good for other stuff but I like the full tang and thickness of blade something like the esse 4 with a better steel spine that can take many ferro strikes and I'd be happy

Oh, also another sharpening method is putting sandpaper on a hard surface and wetting it, then sharpening your convex knife like you would on waterstones. The exact same results, only difference is you don’t get a mirror finish and the sandpaper doesn’t last that long. I tried this method after sharpening my knife for 5 goddamn hours on King stones.

Hi guys, thanks for the great vid. It is very informative and in a honest way. I'm a follower of DBK a long time but I never saw some informations about a Fällkniven Northern light series. I'm from the bavarian outback (germany) and have a lot of german (steel) knives, but now I'm searching for informations about bark river, fällkniven pro series or tre kroner or NL-series and it is very hard to make a decission. thanks for your good looking vids. Greets from bavaria, phil
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 лет назад
Guten Tag Phil!, thanks for the compliment. We have looked at the fallkniven Northern light series but they are just more fancy looking f1, s1 and a1's. The look more appealing but the handle material isn't care free. The handle takes blood, dirt and stuff like that much more easily. Some people like the worn look but for us it was the reason to stick with the regular ones. The TK2 just doesn't really appeal to me. It must be a good hunting knife from what i've heard though. Good luck with making your hard decision!

You guys have an insane amount of nice high quality knives. That's why I would love to see you both buy a Gerber Strongarm, try it out.....yes I said Gerber;) Steel quality is all about heat treatment, a good cook makes good food and Gerber's USA 420 is cooked just right. I have only three knives, I've sold my small collection and have 1 Mora Pro Robust, Condor Bushlore & a Gerber Prodigy. I don't have the Strongarm yet but will have one soon, but my Prodigy I kid you not ive been using that knife daily chopping and carving hard use for 8 months. The knife is 420hc USA and it's got a really good heat-treat, after changing the grind a bit it's been the best I only strop it from time to time. The Strongarm is only $50 US it's a better design than the Prodigy, give um a try it would be cool to see what you guys think, I love your channel by the way.
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 лет назад
Thanks a lot mate! The only experience I have with 420 is from buck and a budget knife I have. I wasn't really impressed by buck's 420 but as you say it's all about the heat treat! 50% type of steel and 50% what you can cook of it! I own an Enzo O1 and while O1 is a budget steel the performances is like that of some ''super steels'' because of it's heat treat. I don't know if we'll be able to test the prodigy anytime soon but it sure looks like a very usable knife made as a work horse. Is there a version without the serrations? I use the start of the edge most for cutting so serrations are kinda a pain for me. Stay sharp! and all the best to you!
@Airik1111bibles
@Airik1111bibles 7 лет назад
Dutch Bushcraft Knives The Strongarm comes with both choices straight edge or serrated, but just recently Gerber released the Prodigy with a straight edge. For new comers who might be looking for a camp knife/survival knife I would highly recommend them over the Mora's in the $30-$50 range. IMO the Strongarm is a better overall design sheath is awesome.

thanks mate! Elmax and Vg10 are pretty different steels. Elmax is mainly edge retention while VG10 is a balanced steel like CoS but not as good as CoS. Elmax is excellent for hard use in a smaller knife. In a big knife it might get chippy.

the swedish air force don't use the fallkniven F 1 anymore, because of the convex grind. They only used the first production line with the flat grind. The convex is very difficult to shape in the field, that's a problem for military use.

I would say wait for the elmax version. It is a lot better than both N690co and D2. N690Co is like VG-10 so it's a decent steel but not nearly as good as elmax.. I would suggest going with the scandi!

What is the steel in the falkniven pro?? Great videos 👍🏼👊🏼
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 лет назад
Thanks a lot Kabir! The steel in the pro series is called CoS a cobalt steel. It takes an incredible sharp edge and is very easy to sharpen. The edge retention is also pretty sweet. I think it's one of the best balanced steels out there.

Brothers, thanks a lot for all of your sweet talks and for all help. actually i'm really new on bushcrafting. After using mora companion for some time, as my first full tang real bushcraft knife i decided to buy an enzo trapper 95. which is not also very expensive. But now it is really hard for me to choose one of those steels. i was sure that i was going to go with "01 tool steel" bacause it is really easy to sharpen carbon steel(im also very new about sharpening with waterstones). But after watching this video, i think maybe i may go with "N690 stainles". So, i have two questions : 1. How fast does 01 rusts in a wet enviroment? 2. Is there any difference bethween the performances of two enzo trappers 01 and N690; if i get N690 do i loose any cutting capability? Again thanks for all off your effort. You helped a lot.

+baris ersoz hey baris, O1 is a great steel. It has better edge retention than n690 with the enzo Knives. Enzo does a very good heat treat on their O1. However O1 rust like crazy. It's on of the few knives i found impossible to keep without rust spots. I do love it a lot. If you go for stainless i would suggest taking a look at the elmax version. It has better edge retention than O1 and N690 and is stainless.

Awesome review guys. Just subbed. I'm just about to drop some good money on a high end knife. Been collecting for a while, mostly lower end edcs and I have my Moras. I'm from Canada, and the price differences are quite different. You should check out some Cosmo knives. He's a Canadian who makes some really nice knives. Pretty pricey though. But I learned a lot and am probably going with a Bark River. Cheers

I would say the Bark river gunny is CPM-3V. We love it a lot. Get one with liners though as you want the handle to be a little thicker.

Hi guys I am looking for a do it all knife in the 4 ish inch blade range to pair with a larger one that is 10 inches plus that I will need to use for bush crafting, skinning deer and elk etc. and camping/hiking tasks that is very versatile and easy to maintain so wont rust a ton but still tough. l also have xl size hands as I am 6 foot 4 inches tall and 220 lbs so i need something i can work with all day and still be comfortable. I have my own opinions but would love to hear what models would you recommend? thanks enjoy your videos..
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 лет назад
mmm, large hands and a versatile knife can be quite a difficult combination. The Bark river fox river (3v) comes to mind. It's primarily a hunting knife but it should be a very capable bushcrafter as well. I'd love to suggest you the Bark River Gunny (3V) with liners to thicken the handle but you'll definitely need to hold it before you buy it as it might be too small. Let me hear your thoughts! i'm curious!

Dutch Bushcraft Knives I was looking at the Aurora 3v as it seems to have a larger handle and maybe hand grind a choil so I could choke up and do really fine work with it. and that pointed tip. also looking at the bravo 1 lt 3v, lon humphrey scout cpm 154, fiddle back bushfinger, bark river wayfarer and bushcrafter 2. it'd be nice to hold each side by side.
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 лет назад
I was actually going to say Aurora at first but I backspaced it because I thought you wanted a smaller knife than the Aurora. the aurora is an amazing bushcrafter. I don't know if the shape would be great for deboning a deer though but it should be able to do the job.

I will be buying more bark river knives, I have two so far and love the quality of them. I have listened to your recommendations regarding the steel choice and unfortunately some of the particular knives they dont give you a choice on the steel choice, the Bark River Knives: Phoenix II for instance only comes in 1095 steel :(
@ssunfish
@ssunfish 5 лет назад
That was only because the repiutation of the company was good, but they didnt offer any models in 1095 so they developed the Phoenix series to supply 1095 lovers with Barkies

Nice sellection of knives guys. My most used knive is the Mora Companion, this is just incredible for all kind of cutting tasks. I just bought the Boker Terra Africa Outdoor and I can recommend this one also. As phase-out model it is now in the 100+ Euro range. Maybe you can talk a little bit more about the blade length and thickness. Regards EM

Hi DBK, if cost is not any problem and I have to choose one knife between "Fallkniven F1 Lam COS" and "Bark River Aurora CPM 3V", which one would you suggest for simple bushcrafting, camping and survival purposes.

Pathetic how so many of your videos has over 100,000 views and only a couple of thousand thumbs up. I guess people are jealous. They will take the time to watch the video but not show appreciation. Either that or they are too stupid to realize how much it helps to give a thumbs up and comment. Great videos.

What techniques can you use to keep steel knives from rusting? I understand they used to wax the blades. Does that really work? Is oil the only answer to rust prevention with steel blades?
@JordanMac79
@JordanMac79 5 лет назад
Mineral oil works well. Depends on the stainless too. S35vn, m390, h1, n680 all steels that would be really hard to rust. Just wipe them dry and they should be okay unless you live in a humid environment
@rhonda837

what do you know about cruwear steel bark river is using?
@ssunfish
@ssunfish 5 лет назад
I can chime in: its a powfer metallurgy version of D2 with more alloying elements and is not oriented to corrosion resistance because of its high carbon content which is what rusts in a steel. It IS oriented to taking and holding a much finer, keener edge and so is ideal fir cutting and slicing as well as working a long time between sharpening. Its the apex of what people choose a carbon steel knife over a stainless steel knife for.

Hi, I wanted to know what is the best stainless steel for a bushcraft knife and survival? I would be undecided between Elmax and S30V, but I wanted to know which of them would best resist lateral stresses? Let me know what your choice would be, a greeting
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 лет назад
Hey michele, I would say something like CoS perhaps or 154cm. I havent really tested elmax or s30v for lateral stress. carbon steels are usually the better choice for that. CPM-3v won't rust very easily but is very tough

Great video! Despite being into custom knives I also love the F1, fantastic robust and versatile knife. I have one question and a comment. Which make was that 160+Euro knife with the "supersteel"? As a comment on supersteels. I think supersteels are overrated :-) A2, O1, 52100, 80CrV2, etc. blades can be fantastic performers if the heat treat and grinding is done right. In fact these steels are very common among custom makers, and they can be blody good!
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 лет назад
I do agree. Supersteel is mostly based on pure edge retention. I love O1 for it's balance but I dislike A2 (only have experience with Bark river's a2) it didn't hold an edge and was also kinda weak. MY o1 enzo performed fantastic!
@grunde73
@grunde73 7 лет назад
If handed right A2 and O1 should be very close in performance (O1 being a tiny bit worse on rust). I have several Fiddlebacks in A2 (and one in O1), and they are all great! The steel in my Fiddlebacks are also notably harder than my A2 BRKs...

I just subscribed to your channel. I'm just curious about a few things. Would you use a more expensive knife like a Bark River for fero rod fore starting? I just ordered a Classic drop point hunter in CMP 3V. Also, how did you guys get started in you expert knife enthusiasm?
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 лет назад
I would use any knife to spark a ferro rod but I would never use the edge for striking. I always use the spine of the blade. You will be very happy with your knife! Bark river and CPM-3V are awesome! I was always into knives but as a kid we just had cheap army replica knives. Later on when we were 16 we really wanted a quality knife so we started watching videos about knives and found out about this whole world of steels. We didn't have money to take our knives to a knife sharpener so we decided to learn it ourselves. We watched a lot of virtuovice and we just got hyped about knives as well haha.
