CHOPPING SILAGE. THE BEGINNING OF HARVEST 2023

Got a call from Jay today and wondered if I was home. In our conversation, he said that they were chopping silage today and I grabbed my Go Pro camera and headed on over.
The corn is none too dry, amazingly. I do not see how. We have had .7 of an inch of rain since May 14th. That puts us at more than 8 inches below normal rainfall amounts.

A 7810 sure would be nice to own! I've often wondered if those speed hitches were any good, the only ones I've ever used are the Bergman hitches and love them. Looks like things went pretty smoothly.
@tractortalkwithgary1271
@tractortalkwithgary1271 10 месяцев назад
Good morning Erik. The only hiccup with the hitch was the one ditch crossing sheared a 3/4 inch mounting bolt right off. That 7810 has 9000 hours on it and was owned by a John Deere mechanic. Jay got a real good deal on it and got some cheap horsepower. Although it is a 2wd, it fits Jays needs nicely. He would loved to have had a FWA but man , how much does that add to the price tag? $20-$25 K? Thanks for watching Erik.

Hello Gary, you got some great footage buddy. The silage cutter is an awesome machine. That hitch is very interesting. I hope you guys get some rain soon. @@tractortalkwithgary1271 dairies around here, the few that are still left anyways, feed it. One of my jobs as a kid was scraping all the cow poo out of the covered feed trough areas. Even the poo smelled like silage.

@@PineyWoodsHomestead , I worked on a dairy farm that had 3 concrete stave silos. 85 feet tall. In the winter, I had to take an axe and chop the frozen silage off from the outside so that the unloader could blow it down to be fed. I used to jump from one to the other at the top rather than to climb all the way down and then back up. It is amazing to me now that I have tempted fate so many times in life and continued to get away with it. Not any more. The sun has set on those days.
@PineyWoodsHomestead
@PineyWoodsHomestead 10 месяцев назад
@@tractortalkwithgary1271 I got about half way up one of those silos once and that's as far as I ever made it. I've never been fond of anything taller than a deer stand. haha

@@PineyWoodsHomestead , I worked on a steel erection crew right out of high school putting up huge grain bins and the grain leg towers. At that time, I was the only one that was comfortable climbing and working at 200 ft + heights so I was the one doing the high work. All of that for $2.00 / hour. Making $20.00 / day gross pay. Got nothing extra for doing the extreme duty work. I was a grunt and didn’t know any better back then.

Howdy Gary, very neat process harvesting. The big equipment is cool to see in action. The quick hitch attachment is very neat. How long does the silage get stored in the long white tube before it gets used? How many cows will it feed?
@tractortalkwithgary1271
