A forgotten warrior lands a battle-torn cargo craft at a military planet on the fringes of civilization. Wrapped in barbed wire, bone ornaments, and strange organisms, he wields naught but his standard issue sidearm, and of all things, an electric ukulele and a totemic alien head attached to a lanyard. He looks like a survivor who has weathered the fiercest storm, and who had sacrificed part of his humanity in the process. Morphine coursing through his veins, acid corroding his armor, and madness dissolving his will, he utters only two words upon exiting the fated shuttle: "Don't ask".

2:28 is the exact moment when I stopped playing the game and actually started listening to the music. Then, I bought the OST on bandcamp. That's the first time I ever bought a video game OST. Not gonna lie the sound tack keeps me coming back to that game....not to say its a bad game but now that I know I can purchase the sound track I intend to. Not to mention this tune sends me back to the 80s, like a person is all calm walking through a city then something happens that pulls out a mean streak in them (akin to the guitar rise of the song) then after they go back to being calm.

Hi Chris! Great to see you responding to your fans! I don't know much about music theory, but I'm grateful for the little I do because it makes listening to incredible, complex, challenging soundtracks like Risk of Rain's all the more enjoyable. I like to listen to it while working and try to count my way through the unusual time signatures. I think I've heard 5/4, 7/4,10/8 - I think I even heard 11/8 in there somewhere! Anything I've missed? I also had a question relating to this track, which is probably my favourite of them all - though it's a near run thing with so many good ones to choose from! Is there a technical term for the scratchy sound guitarists make when they move their fingers over the strings? And is it something you intentionally incorporate into your music, or more just an incidental artefact of a given performance? I was wondering because it seems to really add something to this piece when it quietens down towards the end.

Undoubtably best sound track of all time, this track is the best of them, and best game I've played, along with Minecraft (Minecraft before release of course). Thanks for this!!
@antidisestablishmentariani8730
You ever play terraria? i recommend it far more as a /game/ game. minecraft is more creative in general with the customization to power and 3dness, but they both offer the ability to tweak details
@stealthmanguy
@stealthmanguy 7 лет назад
The drums in the intro are incredibly badass and I want to learn to play it very badly. It's a bit outside what I'm used to playing, I don't think it's in a different timing than normal (I might be wrong) but it's certainly not your usual 4/4 rock beat. The part at 1:24 gives me chills from how fucking cool it is! I'm actually very curious if Chris has a background in playing drums because the RoR OST really shows a mastery that is beyond normal electronic composers.
@stealthmanguy
@stealthmanguy 7 лет назад
Also I love the throwback to the Surface Tension melody. It's cool because it makes me think of the use of motifs in other game OSTs that I adore, like the original Spyro the Dragon OST, and the FTL: Faster Than Light OST. It's probably a common thing in music that I've only noticed a few times, but still cool anyways. I'd definitely put Chris' work up there with the likes of Stewart Copeland! And Ben Prunty too. Not a crazily famous guy that was in a band but still does just as superb musical work. :)
@AstronautDown
@AstronautDown 7 лет назад
Hey! Thanks for the comment on the drums, good to know people appreciate such details :) Well, first part is in 7/4, the bridge is 7/4+5/4+5/4 (repeating twice) and last part is in 5/4. And yes, I used to play drums back in the day for quite a long time, including with a power metal band :) I generally pay close attention to detail across the board, but it's safe to say that from the whole time spent on making RoR, about a third of it was just programming the drums :)

This song was a big reason that I ever played the first risk of rain to begin with, its so good at just summing up the whole atmosphere. The whole theme of a creepy alien planet , the mystery, the creeping feeling that I'm not supposed to be there throughout the whole thing. Honestly listening to this song brings back a ton of memories and just makes me happy. It also did a lot to affect my taste in music. Thank you for making this man, this game and soundtrack were a huge deal to me when I was in highschool, and genuinely had an impact on my life.
