2013-02-07 - On February 7, 2013, the Canadian Space Agency hosted over 30 "space tweeps" at its headquarters for a unique tweetup event during which Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield had a phone conversation with Canadian actor William Shatner, known for his role of Captain Kirk in the Star Trek tv series.
The event started with a short presentation from Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen followed by the conversation between Hadfield and Shatner, and a short Q&A session between Hadfield and space tweeps.

Regardless of how history remembers Commander Hadfield, I feel honoured to have been around at the same time he is, and to have been able to watch someone who I consider to be one of the greatest teachers spread their word around the world. A truely special person.

All Astronauts (including cosmonauts and whatever other countries call it, I just use one word) are true heroes of mankind, history will remember him as such.

And so is William Shatner. The image of Capt. Kirk, as portrayed by Shatner inspired so, so many young boys. Who eventually grew up and some became astronauts. Thus the tears Chris is trying to hold back are from that little boy who dreamed once of touching the heavens.

I had a place at this Event & had to turn it down due to my Dad’s Health having taken another Nose Dive. He felt so badly for me, but as I told my Dad at the time, if there was one thing I wouldn’t regret missing this for, it was for him. That still holds true today. I am glad I can still watch it through RU-vid. 😊 Congratulations to Jeremy on being selected for the Artemis Program!! I can not wait to see him up there or whomever is the lucky 1st Astronaut to proudly wear the Maple Leaf on their Shoulder to launch in a Dragon hopefully in the very Near Future!! 😁😊

So....when talking to the astronauts on the ISS, there is ALWAYS an audio delay of 8-11 seconds....except when Chris plays his guitar with an orchestra here on earth....for a “live” broadcast....why?

Well, different people, different questions. I found this part of the video most interesting. Most people on earth would never take the (relatively small) risk and they have doubts about space travel in general. Shatner seems to be one of those many people. It's only fair that the questions and doubts of them are also voiced and ...maybe contradicted. I do not have doubts, but I like to see them discussed. And I like how Shatner is still fair and open and honestly tries to understand it.

Chris talking to the man who helped inspire Chris’s life journey. Speaking to one’s Heroes in life is an overwhelming but powerful moment. To know that they are just people but the images they helped to create inspired a generation to achieve and reach higher than they ever thought possible. That is why this current era’s movie figures should be heroes to us all and not a symbol of hate, division or self importance. Heroes of yesteryear were selfless and acted on behalf of All people for the good of All people. Doing what was right because it was right to do in the eyes of creation and life. Captain Kirk image is one of the greatest and most noble figures to ever come out of media for all time. Portrayed by an actor who put all that he was into a role. Doing his Best to make it. His best was so great it made other make it too. And for the good of humanity. Mr. Shater and Chris are our living legends and an inspiration to us all.

Shatner had trouble, with our clumsy English language, perfecting his question about if Hatfield enjoyed the view and experience as Both a Scientist and a Human being. I am very glad that Hatfield fully understood the question. In one part of his mind he could have his breath taken away by the view or experience while the his inner-scientist - the other part of his mind, is doing calculations or taking notes in preparation for poosible outcomes or stimuli in which he must react to. Excellent answer and very well thought out. I have trouble arranging my answers when asked open ended questions like that. It is all in my head, then suddenly it goes blank or gets jumbled on the way out of my mouth. As a representative of Canada and Earth (as his colleagues are representative of their countries and Earth), Hatfield must be able to make full and clear reports and answer questions fully, without long tangents. In other words, he has excellent public speaking skills. He can be seen by the camera in the room, but can't see who he is talking to, so he also has excellent hearing. It not easy talking to disembodied voices, it can be disorienting. Especially with understanding context and emotion behind the words - facial expressions and cues (the kind of trouble that literal, linear, and Autistic people have trouble with). This is one of the reasons I enjoy watching these videos. keep them coming!

You think so? I think they were trivial. Kids ask questions about his mission, about our work on space, interested in space itself, like saying "How is it out there? I want to be out there". Shatner only seems to ask regarding his insecurities, "How could you go out there? Its risky to go out there"...

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. It's not about following the law - perfectly, as it's impossible - it's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus. If you have any questions let me know x
