The sad part is, this is totally true. We landed on a beach in Haiti...some "private beach" for Royal Caribbean. And there were Haitians hanging on the other side of the fence watching all these cruisers eat at a luxurious buffet. It was horrible at a level I've never forgotten. They just stood there, staring at the opulence that they couldn't be a part of. Never been back.

Don't have that attitude. The goal of humanity, especially relevant in Christianity, is to lift each other up. Even though it may seem unfair, your tourism money actually benefits the local economy. Look what happened after the Pandemic with the drop in tourism destabilizing a crucial part of the already unstable Haitian economy.Maybe join a missionary trip in the future to Haiti to actually help those you saw on the other side of the fence. Food for the soul makes your mind at ease.

Carina Carter, I grew up there, in MS in the 1960s thru 1970s. It was Gawd-awful there, especially back then, imo. My town was Quitman County’s county seat. And I remember when the Town started to sell hard liquor. At one small, square building w/big windows,...but that one store closed for the night at 10:00pm, sharp. And didn’t open at all on Sundays. Man! I wonder what year its advanced to. If it has, at all. I went back in 1994 to visit my Parents’ graves. Not much had changed. Maybe there might’ve been a Mickey-D’s (Golden Arches) that was new?

Isn't that the truth? A hint: any island nation in the world is impoverished. They have to pay enormous taxes to import things we think of as everyday common items. Even Hawaii is impoverished. Just sleep during your shuttle ride from the airport to your resort and tip well every person that does any service for you. I am a big believer in giving people money for their pockets. Their wages, they have to claim on their taxes. Cash: they can put in their pockets and use for whatever they need.

Man, that Caribbean joke hit home when I went to the Dominican Republic. The drive from the airport to the resort was crazy. I saw dead bodies on the side of the road and street with no turn signals. Once I got to the resort and filled my belly with oxtails/plantains/goat , I forgot about everything I saw just 3 hrs earlier.

I love how he points out that once you're in the nice places, surrounded by beauty and comfort, you automatically forget how badly most of the people live. That's basically how rich people who live in the third world countries get along 24/7. They may feel stressed or afraid when they go out of their neighborhoods and face misery lying around every corner, but most of the time they just don't give a shit. And it's getting closer & closer to home. I was in San Francisco awhile back & within a few blocks of the dignified banking district, people are camping on sidewalks, & that's not ALL they're doing on the sidewalks. In L.A. there's an underpass as you head into Marina del Rey where lots of rich retirees live & park their boats. Clothes are strewn around & a toilet bucket or two's usually visible.

I've been to Mississippi twice, just passing through on my way from Oklahoma to Florida and back a couple of years ago. Within minutes of driving across the border from Memphis, Tennessee, the first time I went there, my car got TWO flat tires! This happened at 9:30 PM so all of the tire shops AND Walmart were closed already. So, I couldn't keep driving to Alabama as I had originally planned. Unfortunately, ALL of the hotels and motels in the area were completely booked (it was Memorial Day weekend), so I had to sleep in my car. So, Mississippi is kind of cursed for me. I had similar problems in Louisiana a few months later.
