"Dear Pastor Bob: I was wondering if you could tell me why todays Christian bands hold up the devil horns and also ask the crowd to hold up their devil horns . Even at Christian festivals you see this a lot. I've seen some bands preach a great sermon and share the word of God and then turn around and say to the crowd, 'Let me see your devil horns.'" That's the message today in this edition of Pastor Bob DAILY!

The whole horns up expression started with Ronnie James Dio and he explained it as an Italian gesture to fight off bad luck and evil spirits. So in a way, it is a good symbol.

The symbol was used in rock music before Dio, but yes and no

I think the symbol have many meanings to different people. But symbols hold no true power. We use the "Devil's horns" to show our unity as metalheads and our love for heavy metal music. We don't use it as a way of worshiping satan. It's all about what's in your heart!

Dear Pastor Bob, I'm a staunch, militant atheist, however, I do, truly appreciate a Christian like you. A level headed, rational man with faith. From the other side of the spectrum, so to speak. Thank you. The world needs more Christians like you and less fanatical fundamentalists. Your God bless you.

***** God (or at least the judeo Christian god) is a concept. A device used to describe certain things. so, if he believes that, I was politely ending my message.
@timothyduffy3704

Notice that he said your god bless you and not his god bless you. The athiest was just trying to be nice and respectful by saying that and i notice a lot of christians especially conservative christians that need to learn the same manners. Im not saying that you were trying to be rude as i think you weren't in this case. But lets face it when the persecution comes upon us its going to be by people that mistake fake christians for real christians and a lot of real christians are going to be killed because of that as well as those that simply hate god. As fyi only this is why fake christians that misrepresent the word of christ and charactor of christ need to be rebuked and corrected. When speaking to others about our faith we should share with them our experiences of what jesus did for our lives and let god do the rest rather than force, antagonization and legislation. Its just like the creationist debates. I really don't know if god created the world in 7 litteral days or if a day to god is thousands of years and i really don't care. God had revealed himself as real to me and he will reveal himself to be real to others too. All we got to do is plant the seed for that by polite conversations with others about jesus.

@@WintersunForever as a citizen of Post-Soviet country i'll disagree. Many atheists then, and post-soviet atheists have the same militant fanatism, as any radical Christian. BTW, fundamentalism is not a bad thing. There are fundamentalist Mennonite and Amish communitites that have an amazing people. One of the finest folks i've ever met were Mennonites.

According to Ronnie James Dio he used the fingers in that formation because Ozzy had used the peace sign when he was with Black Sabbath. Dio said he saw his Italian Grandmother use the malocchio gesture to ward off 'The Evil Eye' or Curses from others. I think we do want to be considerate that our practices not be intentionally offensive. I agree with you that interpretations of some things change with time and culture.

why is this guy always making excuses for "christian" musicians not setting themselves apart from occult bands. Symbols in the occult are used to identify an occultist to other occultists below the awareness of the general populace. For a christian to use occult symbols is flat out signaling that they are givin' over to pagan doctrins. Take stryper's use of the "dark fallen angel" on their albums...this clearly represents "demons" , "lucifer" or "backsliding rebellion" symbols are NOT BENIGN!!

For me it has always represented "Rock On!". No religious or biblical meaning whatsoever. If you turn the hand around it means "I and "L" in sign language. It is used in some parts of Italy to ward off "the evil eye". You will have people say the hand in that position forms three 6's (666). You see what you want to see.

Thank you for this video... I used the 'Devil's Horns' at a 'Lacey Sturm' concert, until I realized that people were staring at me... I honestly made that sign, and put my hand in the air cause I love her music!! I guess, how it all started was that 'Gene Simmons' wanted to 'wave' at 'fans' in the crowd, but couldn't because of the guitar pic, he'd hold the pic with his thumb, and middle finger... I watched him talk about that... So,... Yeah.. To me it's a symbol of greeting, and love for the music... And that's all! Thank you!

Stryper's album cover "no more hell to pay" for example the symbols are completely unchristian. the message is that a fallen angel is freed from hell. angels coming out of hell has nothing to do with the bible. actually the message of the album art communicates a Satanic reversal. that the devil (fallen angels) are not subject to God's eternal judgement. JEsus rose from the grave defeating death and the power of hell...HE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT ESCAPED HELLS GRASP. No one will esape God's place of judgement once there. the devils message is "you will never die" "you can be like god" . this is clearly a "firebird rising from the ashes" a cherished Satanic and occult symbol. Symbols communicate very powerfully to the subconcious below people's awareness, especially while listening to loud music when they are not using critical discernment and they are in their emotions........this is how indoctrination works...overstimulate someone, bombard their senses and then use a symbol or image to speak into their subconscious mind below their awareness.
@sodabob

I think you're reading way too much into it, or misinterpretting. It's symbolic of being saved from sin, not literally being removed from Hell.
@crimsonthornguys
@crimsonthornguys 11 лет назад
I know the bible talks about this sort of thing when the early Christians asked if they should eat meat that was sacrificed to idols. They were told not to ask if it was sacrificed to an idol or not. By putting such importance on it we act as though the power of the idol was real and it's not. Most people do that sign to mean a love for metal. There is not power in that sign. If my 4 year old daughter draws stars that look like pentegrams, there is no evil in that.
@thtblondekid2047

Is there something evil about music? no there isnt. However, music can be used to sin through the lyrics used or the intent of the composition. How is metal satanic and not other forms of music satanic as well? Rap and hip hop probly have just as much un holiness, even poprock/rock which is widely used as the genre for worship music can be just as bad. Metal has its roots on classical music.. does this mean that that is satanic as well? Music isnt sinful when the intent is to glorify God.

The horns actually have a very Roman Catholic background....Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P) saw his grandma giving others that sign if she saw someone giving her what she deemed to be an "evil look" or "evil eyes" and so she gave the look back to them, except she used her hands and did this "\m/" The name "Devil Horns" came well after it's creation....devil horns aren't evil, at all. They're no more evil than the hippie peace sign...

Plus God takes things and changes the meaning my band mistakingly used a pagan cross once for our christian band. Instead of stating it was evil we said this symbol is no longer that of the devil but it is now used for the Glory of Christ. Just like us god changes the meaning of things.

The devils horns is used in italian witchcraft to call upon the god during ritual and spellwork according to italian witchcraft the old religion of southern europe by raven gramasy. Also about the only safe holidays to celebrate are the jewish holidays and the only safe marriage are jewish weddings and synagogues are the only true places of worship. But as far as metal in general do you really think that god is going to appreciate christian black metal with all the demonic voices? Before following jesus i was a wiccan and even as a wiccan i was tired of all the lyrics glorifying satan and the demonic voices that all sound the same. I got into symphonic metal with people that actually know how to sing such as dragonforce and ancient bards and with guitarists that know how to shred which is a must for me. I been looking for christian metal bands that can do the same and golden resurrection is the only one i found. I encourage future bands to do so and along with thinking in terms of using such music to turn people on to christ ask yourself this one question would this be appropriate for me to play in heaven before the presence of god? If your going to play christian metal make it a thing of heavenly beauty where the angels can sing in chorus to the praise and glory of god. Otherwise i suggest that each and every christian reading this pray to litterally hear gods voice. When i did it i openly confessed to jesus that i didn't believe that he exists but i am open to a sign that he does. I litterally heard a gentle voice that said my word is my spirit. Thats what turned me from wicca to following jesus. This is the voice that should be heard by both people that erroneously use scipture to criticize christian metal out of prejudice against it and their own agendas as well as those that praise god with satans voice. Try it it might happen to you too. And then follow that voice. Christian metal can be done but its got to be done in gods way.

Well said Tim! I found all your information about us Jewish folks( I 'am a Messanic Jew) to be very interesting. If my opinion you have to look at the lyrics of these bands to decipher, if they are really singing about the Lord. In your own mind and thinking you can easily figure out what song has evil intentions .

Hes right a lot of pagan holidays and traditions are blended into society because it is a way to show love, support, and well being. Which almost all religions teach. I don't go to church because I don't like organized religion but I follow the teachings of Christ as well as i can. A heartfelt thanks Bob for your pastor's heart for people over many years of ministry. You were a great encouragement to me and it is great to hear your thoughts about many things. That insert you did for Barren Cross really spoke to me at a time when the church here in Scotland didn't know what to do with metal heads and I was very young in my faith. You are right, of course, about he the church redeeming pagan symbols. Chief of these would be the cross itself. Here in the UK many churches were purposely built on old pagan worship sites.

Also, The Lamb of God has 7 horns. The only character with two horns in the scriptures is the man of sin. Do a study on that sometime. More to think about for sure if you're thinking about how to further glorify the Father and not continuing in the many paths of the world. Our path is the straight and narrow path and few there are that find it, yet all are called. Please do in depth study on these things. Michael Hoggard is a great teacher/preacher on these things and is a man led by the Spirit of the Lord. He's made many videos concerning symbols, the whore, Babylon and the coming beast system. Please check him out. I pray that you will even if you don't agree with everything he says, yet. It took me a bit to come out of it too and to realize that I needed to stop certain behaviors. Doesn't mean we are perfect but we DO have to try. When we stumble we ask for forgiveness but we certainly are not called to continue in sin. Trying not to continue in sin doesn't make you too "religious" it's about having as pure of a relationship with the Son as we can, our ONLY bridge back to the Father. I'll pray for you all. May God bless you and keep you my friends.

The Devil's Horns isn't actually what it's called. Technically it is called: THE MALOIK (pronounced Muh loi-k). It is said by Italians, that it wards off evil spirits & evil things. In actual fact it means NOTHING at all. It's all about one person or people who've done it & made it up to say it wards of evil spirits. The "sign" as it is called means nothing. But to some it means it wards off evil spirits, to some it's Devil horns. It DOES NOT mean DEVIL HORNS. Anyone can Google "The Maloik" & see what it tells you. The reason why ALOT of people today say that The Maloik is the Devil Horns, is because someone made it up in their mind it resembles a Devil head & his horns. Kind of like ALOT of people say the middle finger flipped up means "F" you ! In fact it doesn't mean that at all. Someone long ago just made that up too, and today ALOT of people believe that. Practically any finger flipped up by itself could mean "F" you. If you tell someone or show someone something & say it's this or that enough times to them, they'll believe it & say that it is something meaningful.

And to clarify, the Impending Doom concerts I've been to were some of the scariest concerts I went to. Even scarier than Whitechapel concerts, which are EXTREMELY far from Christian.

Ronnie James Dio as far as I know popularized the gesture. He explained it like this his grandmother would use the symbol (the moloke) to defend against the evil eye. Some superstitious thing from my point of veiw. When it’s done at a Metal or hard rock concert it just means rock on. 🤘🏼 it’s a gesture of appreciation rather than even a religious thing at this point.

Everything in this life was created by men, all words are too, except the bible, so use the things but do not go deep on meaning of things, its just a thing men created, but be careful of how you use it, and why you do it, the intent matters, like the word Witch, it also means a wise woman, but society hates and gets scared to hear this or know presence of a witch in a gathering, for she knows a lot an can harm if she wills. So always put on the armor of God, read and meditate on bible, and Lord will show you the right path to heaven, Amen.

Relate to Christian metal better than contemporary or hymnal songs because of the depth of listening and intriguing complex sounds that come with it. If you dont believe that's your choice. We live in a fallen world, everything is broken. I never said that all music was God's music, what I'm saying is that any genre can be use to glorify or reject God. I am not worshiping metal music, but merely using it to worship God just as I do with other genres such as rock/hiphop/pop etc. What makes you think that metal is evil? is it the style, lyrics or the way the band members live? I know there are christian metal bands because they bear the fruits of the spirit while on stage and off.

Remember, Satan was created as Music Incarnate with pipes & tabrets. When he fell, the creation of Music fell as well. In Romans we read that the whole creation is under the bondage of corruption. So there goes your "All Music is God's Music" argument. Read Mark 8:34-38 & Romans 12:1-2. If we can't truly deny ourselves & repent of that obvious lust 4 Metal Worship. Then we have lied to ourselves to embrace a Crossless Christianity. Are U ashamed of the Strait & Narrow Way? See Matthew 7:13-23

I saw an interview with Ronnie James Dio, the one who started it, and he was asked what it meant. He said he got it from his Grandmother. She was an old Italian Catholic and she always did that sign to him when he would leave. He didn't know what it meant and he started doing it to the crowd because he thought it looked cool. Turns out it's an old Italian Catholic symbol to protect you from evil spirits. He said he never meant it as Devil horns. He did it as a tribute to his Grandmother.

I think it's important not to judge a person at face value. Often some use the symbol in ignorance. And he's right, they often use it in response to the music and showing they're love for it. So if they're doing that to a Christian song with Christian messages being supported, then what are we upset about? If you have a problem with it in your own life, don't use the symbol yourself. but don't judge others who do.

Bob, your right on with knowing some history of the christian church, and as a believer i for one want to do away with "christian" holidays and start celebrating the jewish holidays celebrated by believers in the NT in light of Yeshua. As for the "devil's horns", it has always been interpereted as occultic and remains so to this day. This is na case of not neven having an appearence of evil.

It's called "mal ochio" or "evil eye", and yes, in Italian culture, a person will use this symbol and point the horns downwards to ward off the devil. Interestingly enough, to display the horns in the traditional way is also a sign language symbol that means "I love you".

I think something to note here about that symbol is that, in sign language, if you make that symbol and wave your hand forward and backward, it translates into "You rock!" then if you extend your thumb, it stands for "I love you!" Great message Pastor Bob, I believe it clears up some confusion.

i agree, even though the devils horns started as an expression of satanic allegiance, today they mean exactly what pastor bob said. at least 75% of the people who do it do it as a right on metal gesture, the same as a thumbs up! Now there are still some especially within satanic black metal bands, or people who want you to believe they are satanic or evil who thrust up the horns with the original meaning behind the gesture. But most don't. It's like the word "Gay" it used to mean happy.

I don't think metal people are evil but metal music carries a deep dark message. please join in our debate on facebook "christians against slipknot". I was a metal person once. I played in bands. I lived the rock life style. It was a diversion from what mattered. A dark diversion. Metal is a gateway into darkness. If you can enjoy metal without feeling tainted and keep on being a good man, power to you, but not everyone is as strong as that. Peeace be with you David

where in the bible does it say the devil has horns because remember men made the devil to their own image by saying he is a hideous red monster with horns yet the bible claims the devil was one of Gods angels and most beautiful creation

The Horns -- blame that on Ronnie Dio. I actually riled the crowd up to raise the f*cking horns. Dave Mustaine says the horns means "I Love You" -- being I host secular metal shows as an MC but I discouraged it when Ezurate went on stage.

The bible does say not to partake in the pagan rituals. Same principals for tattoos. If you're not doing it as a pagan practice, ritual, or idolatrous in any way. Then chances are, unless convicted by the holy spirit, it's A okay :P

I know, I thought it was funny too. But you know, I think throughout the ages the message of turning the other cheek and love and peace even for your 'enemies' is being buried. Not that you are doing this necessarily, but you get the idea ;)

The horns origins are in Dio's grandmother - used for giving the evil eye to someone. Dio began the use of the symbol.

No, i not believe it, cause you are dirty minded you believe the sign of heavy metal is bad. This is not fix to believe that this to split fingers are devils horn, it is depend to the meaning if you use that.

Howdy, The devil horns is actually "the evil eye". The guy who invented Heavy Metal saw his grandmother use'n the hand sign for "the evil eye" and was look'n for someth'n to use in his concert's for some reason.

You forgot your arms...or at least the tattoos. Originally, they were a pagan way of worshiping the dead, by staining the skin with their images. Yet today tattoos represent something a lot different.

Actually, before the 1900's the 'devil horns' were used to actually fight evil, or to show that something was wrong or evil. This is actually the opposite of what you are claiming.

Satanism hasn't existed for thousands of years though, and you can change what things symbolize. Many symbols of Christianity are based on Pagan symbols and beliefs.

Dear Bob, You said, "We'd have to give up a lot of things..." "It's your decision, what you feel comfortable with..." But the Bible says, "Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils.", and "Be ye holy, for I am holy.", saith the Lord. You have a choice to make, Bob. Are you going to be a friend of the world, or a disciple of Jesus Christ? Narrow is the way to life, and you will give account for what you are doing, and what you are teaching people. I will pray for you right now.

That's basically my outlook on Rock and Metal, which I love. Being a Christian, my absolute favorite genres are Christian Rock, Christian Metal and Christian Metalcore/Hardcore, and I stay away from ANY band that either is, looks or seems Satanic, because honestly, it's freaking creepy, which is reason enough for me to stay away from them. But anyway, I'll give examples: Fave Christian Rock Band: Skillet! I absolutely LOVE them! Not only are they a TRUE example of what a Christian band should, but they are very inspirational and, at often times, fun to listen to. Literally the ONLY thing about Skillet that used to trouble me was their album cover for Awake (you'll have to see it), but because Skillet is a Christian Rock band, I don't, at all, see the album cover as Satanic, but rather it symbolizes the name of the album. Fave Christian Metalcore Band: For Today I absolutely LOVE this band as well! Their music is very powerful, yet very inspiring and really gets to the heart. Side note: for those of you who haven't, check out these bands! You will be amazed! And while there's bands like Skillet and For Today that I listen to, there's also other Rock/Metal bands I've listened to that are either not listed as Christian or aren't Christian at all. Now these bands, I technically don't “listen to", as far as lyrics go. I basically just rock out to it (dance crazily, bob my head insanely (or as some call it, “headbanging")). Like, for instance, when I'm listening to a song that has lyrics that I do not approve of, but I like, say, the instrumentals and how the singer's voice sounds, I just rock out to that and pay no mind to the lyrics. The moral of the story is, the way I see (namely) Rock/Metal music, for the listener, it's considered evil if they actually USE that music influentially for devil worship. That being said, I may have heard a song before that had lyrics that I didn't approve of (may have even been satanic), yet I rocked out to it, but I didn't let that song give me certain thoughts or drive me to the point of insanity or evil influences. I rocked out to it, simply because it was of Rock/Metal genre, which is what I like. All that said, though, I still choose Christian Rock/Metal over any Rock/Metal genre, cause not only does it have, pretty much, a WAY better sound and lyrical output than other Rock/Metal genres, but depending on the bands, such as the two I mentioned earlier, it is very inspirational, very beautiful, very powerful (in a great way) and quite relatable among others, and it's the type of music I would actually recommend to others. Also, a lot of the songs are actually about God, while other songs could be about the many problems and hardships we face, or even our own personal problems, to which many can relate.
