Check out this great book on Geert Grote and the movement he started: amzn.to/3trmA8W
Geert Grote’s life and writings inspired the Sisters and Brothers of the Common Life to view education as a means of spiritual renewal. Shaped by Grote’s own experience of losing his parents and time spent surrounding universities in Paris and Cologne, the schools founded by the Sisters and Brothers of the Common Life became one of the most significant educational systems in the Low Countries of Europe. The impact of their students and model of education outlasted the movement’s relatively brief historic timespan by implementing novel techniques and providing instruction to the common people outside the monastic context.
Some have gone so far as to credit the Brothers of the Common Life with the economic flourishing of the Netherlands while surrounding countries languished. Given that Grote preached for only four years from early 1380 to late 1383 and that the movement as a whole only lasted until the Reformation, the fact that they influenced the likes of Thomas of Kempen, Erasmus, Martin Luther, and John Calvin and saw their educational model become foundational in the Netherlands, Germany, England, and the United States is shocking.
It is in light of this impact that Grote has been called “one of the truly influential figures of fourteenth-century Europe.” Grote’s life being tragically cut short due to the black plague, potentially contracted while serving plague victims, empowered him as an inspirational figure, but prevented him from enacting many of the plans he had outlined. His values were picked up by his followers, especially Florens Radewijns, and carried forward to successive generations. It was through the work of these subsequent Devouts that the schools started by the Sisters and Brothers “emerged as a large presence in Netherlandish towns during the fifteenth century, a crucial source of learning, moral formation, and reforming religious for two or three generations[.]”

Never heard of him until now. What a seminal figure! It is an interesting model of merging a scholarly approach to life with an earthiness, touching the ordinary. Loving God with all your mind and loving your fellow man.

One of the benefits of studying Church history is learning about some of the incredible women and men of God who have gone before us that made massive impacts on history, yet have largely been forgotten. Heaven remembers. Thanks for watching! I hope you and your family are doing well!

Thanks, @Bre Buxton You’d probably be interested in checking out The Modern Devotion (Devotio Moderna), the movement he founded. It was primarily led by non-priests, had a strong female presence from the beginning, and made a massive impact. The book I recommend in the description is the best history out there on the movement.
