It may be worth noting that D'Souza pled guilty to a felony charge in 2014 (after having initially denied any wrong-doing) and was fined, sentence to community service and weekly therapy. Although the prosecution recommended jail time, he didn't get any. The felony was violation of campaign finance laws.

Although he's the one telling us the full context of the snippets Christopher uses for his arguments. The "god is dead" bit is an example of this. I'm an atheist, but an honest one. If you think people with a disagreement over something neither side can prove are simply ignorant or stupid, than you've placed yourself squarely in their camp. You're just as ideologically driven if you can't see that dinesh was showing to either be more read or more honest than christopher in that exchange. Christopher was purposefully using a short term from a story with a completely different moral value as the author's own words in a personnel sense knowing his audience has never read these volumes.

Albert Einstein letter dated 24 March 1954 " It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal god and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbound admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."

Under D'Souza eventually there would be only one animal in those ponds. I notice in lots of these debates, the Christians defend only on the argument that God must exist in the universe. However I think they should have defended on the claim that "God not only exists but also it's the one described in the bible" ! I don't have the evidence to disprove the existence of a kind of God . But I find it ridiculous to believe that God is the one described in the bible. Therefore, Christians have the burden to prove not only God exists, but also he/she/it is the one they talked about in the bible.

ON THE EVOLUTION OF MORALITY To answer D’Souza on what makes humans different than the animals, there seems to be one clear answer: Language. Language allows us to enter into game theory by using gossip to infer reputation. The fairer relationships are the better off, and bolster group cohesion and therefore survival. Language allows us to conceptualize otherwise ineffable concepts like death and law and lying. God doesn’t give humans morality Mr. D’Souza, Frans De Waal shows clearly that chimps and bonobos have the basics already down for fairness. Allow a few million years for the development of language and our full-on innate morality follows suit. How hard was that?
@davidstorrs

Good lord that was painful. Every single thing that Dinesh said was straight out of the standard apologetics playbook. EDIT: Actually, I suppose I should include the refutations. I'm writing this after watching the video so he probably made some arguments that I'm not remember offhand. ------------ Claim: Doing something for future generations makes no evolutionary sense. Refutation: It absolutely does. The apes that took care of their children had more of their children survive, so their genes propagated. The cows that took care of their environment by not crapping in the water / overgrazing the land / etc had more of their children survive, so their genes propagated. Etc etc etc. ------------ Claim: (The Kalam Cosmological argument: Everything that begins to exist, the universe began to exist, therefore the universe has a cause.) Additionally, we assume that nature cannot cause itself, therefore there must be a supernatural creator. We call that creator God. Refutation: First, here's a better-than-I-could-do refutation of the Kalam by Dr Sean Carroll, an actual physicist: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g5iiHV4yo7M.htmlm19s As to the addendum: Please show evidence that nature cannot cause itself, but look up the black swan fallacy before you do. Even if we granted that invalid assumption, it at most gets you to a deistic god and not to the Abrahamic God, which is what's being debated here. ------------ Claim: The universe is brilliantly designed. Jupiter sweeps up asteroids, the sun is at the right distance, etc. Refutation: Douglas Adams brilliantly refuted this with the sentient puddle analogy. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v8mJr4c66bs.html Short version: The puddle (us) fits the hole (the universe), not the other way around. ------------ Claim: We can't have morality without God. Refutation: Nonsense. Empathy is all we need to get to morality. Furthermore, morality has existed in every society from the dawn of humanity -- it existed long, long, LONG before Jesus was born, and even before monotheism was a glimmer in anyone's eye.

When does religion (judeo-christian) claim that EVERYTHING, scientificwise, is in the Bible? The Bible contains many recent scientific discoveries, but who and where does it say in the Bible that it contains EVERYTHING ? On what basis do you say that " religion claims to already have all the answers ". Religion has one job: to bring worshipers together with the object of their worship. The Bible in this case is for us to know God and to make Him known, to find our way to Him and help others find Him. Its 1200 pages long and treaties on thermodynamics or electromagnetism just arent that high a priority. And thats ok because many believers just trust in it and spend their lives pursuing other truths, like science and arts, and sometimes they find things that benefit theologists and beleivers, just as theologists and believers have things that benefit the scientist and researcher. Its a vast and complex world and we need eachothers services and minds. Theres no part of any knowledge that has all the answers. The chemist needs mathematics, mathematics needs logic , all sciences are dependant on eachother. "Science" will stop updating to find new answers if it WANTS to prove something rather than discover anything. Look at Dawkins, an obsolete dinosaur that still clings to Darwin who has been proven wrong time and time again, because he WANTS Darwin to be right, because of HIS religious reasons , "Darwinism", a word he cant stop using. He clings to it like an imature kid who still sleeps with his teddy bear well into teenage years, and is the laughing stock of the scientific comunity, including atheist scientists; his intelectual dishonesty and immaturity, and the fact that he insists on an error out of pride and spite, earns him his collegues contempt, and rightfully so. I for one, cannot speak for the rest of theists, but i believed in evolution (macro) for most of my life because i believed the lie that we had phases upon phases of skeletons of apes turning slowly into men. When i discovered that the whole theory was based on a slightly weridly shaped fragment of a jaw and a couple of cracked ribs and several shards of skull caps, i stoped believing in evolution (not from that reason only, also genetics). To me man evolving from ape was one of many stages in a long process of God creating man from the dust of the earth. My reasons to doubt evolution are from lack of empyrical evidence. I ALWAYS questioned the bible , as much as i questioned the science, and always found answers that strenghtened my faith and trust in the gospel as well as knowledge of the univers. The more they grow the more they merge and confirm each other. Blind faith is bad, in ANTYHING be it religion, government and science. Always keep a healthy 5% of skepticism to allow new ideas to seed in your brain, because anything that gets to 100% in your brain it will cause madness...thats when bodies start to pile.

D'Souza claims there's no way to verify the speed of light in another galaxy, and that might seem plausible. But he is utterly wrong, it's not an assumption! It's derived from observations. For example, chemistry and the physics of light are intimately intertwined, and a spectral analysis of light from other galaxies tells us that chemistry works the same way all over the universe and therefore throughout time. The observation of consistent redshift of far away galaxies is another piece of evidence, which we wouldn't observe the way we do if the speed of light varied substantially throughout the universe.

How can I not hate those that claim their opinion comes from a divine authority and as such they have a divine mandate to impose such beliefs on me? The fact is though that I don't hate them but I will be as hostile as I need to be in order to make them see how insane and destructive their beliefs have been on the growth and development of our species.

You quote mistruths or half truths. 1) In contrast to common belief. The word Eternity doesnt mean forever and ever. It simply means "final" or unchanging. The Bible actually teaches that those reject God will be destroyed or killed "for Eternity" where they will cease to exist and this fate is unchanging. This was a mistranslation from the original Greek text. 2). There is nowhere in the Bible that tells people not to think rationally. Actually the opposite. The book of Proverbs is filled with excerpts about acquiring Wisdom, Understanding and Knowledge. (which actually "leads" people to God instead of away). It's those people who mix "pride" and arrogance with their own wisdom (while ignoring the wisdom and evidence of God in nature and conscious) that are led astray by their own illogical thinking. 3) The Bible is not someone's "opinion". It is composed of 66 books by 39 authors over 3500 years. The authors of the books of the Bible span the socio-economic spectrum (from Kings, Priests, Scholars, Sheppards, Tax Collectors,etc) many of whom never met one another....Yet they all come to a consensus. God exists and he manifested personally in Jesus Christ. The Bible is the most reviewed and scrutinized book in history yet detractors still have not been able to completely refute or disprove the texts (even though many doubt the validity of the stories and events).
@bleach219
@bleach219 9 лет назад
Scott Williams I can't refute the existence of pink unicorns yet that doesn't mean they exist. It doesn't really matter how many people came to a consensus over a piece of history they were not witness to especially when they had every reason to want to believe they were true. Your number is off Jesus was supposedly around about 2000 years ago you can't have people from 3500 years ago as part of a consensus to events that have yet to happen. Trying to convince me your argument is valid because a lot of important people believed it is a logical fallacy referred to as an appeal to authority. If you're trying to include "prophecies" as the reason for saying 3500 years then please quote the "prophecy" that specifically gives the name Jesus Christ since I have yet to see it. It doesn't really matter whether the stories in the bible occurred or not . Even if Jesus existed, even if he did everything they claim he did none of it equates to him being the physical manifestation of a being capable of creating the universe. Thank you for the correction on the meaning of eternity I feel so much better now to know that instead of burning in a lake of fire for not believing I'll simply be erased from existence for the horrible sin of skepticism in the face of absurd claims. You honestly think the bible encourages the pursuit of knowledge? Truly? The core tenant of your religion is the belief that because Adam and Eve chose to pursue knowledge by eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil they and all their descendants have since then been punished for the terrible sin of pursuing knowledge. The implication of that story also is that before they ate the fruit they had no knowledge of good and evil which means no knowledge of morality so ordering them not to do something when they could not understand that the action was wrong is stupid. It is like me getting a puppy from the pound telling it not to crap on my carpet and then beating it to death when it does because it doesn't know any better yet since I have not taught it any better. Quoting later passages doesn't change this core tenant it only goes to show the bible is incoherent and contradictory. I did not misquote anything you simply don't like what your sacred scripture says and so pretend the more grotesque passages don't exist. By the way if evolution is true then the Adam and Eve story is false and if that is true then there was no original sin and therefore no reason for Jesus to be born and get sacrificed so the entire core of your religion is therefore false. You don't find it even the slightest bit absurd that the central tenant of your religion is the notion that god had to screw some Palestinian woman in order to give birth to Himself so he could then sacrifice Himself to Himself in order to save us from Himself because he was holding a grudge over an action supposedly committed by people dozens if not hundreds of generations prior and for some reason decided that was the only way he could let go of his grudge? It's a truly insane and evil set of beliefs and it is immoral to approve the idea of vicarious redemption (aka scapegoating).
