Chrysippus, the third head of the stoic school of philosophy, is often known only as the man who died by laughing at a donkey eating figs. Despite this only being one of two ways he could've died according to Diogenes Laertius, this fame has hidden the other parts of his life.
For example, he is said to have written over 750 works over his life and 500 lines a day. Unfortunately, however, only fragments remain.
This leads one to wonder if it was all worth it, if all this work was necessary only to be remembered as the philosopher who died laughing at a donkey. To us on the outside it may seem tragic. After all, one of the greatest feelings of despair come from working hard on a project only to have it fall apart. However, Chrysippus nonetheless made major contributions to stoic philosophy and perhaps he found meaning and purpose in his work, even if it didn't survive.
