These guys are the whole reason that Metallica even exists. According to Lars, he went to Europe and found himself somehow invited into the studio to hang out with Motorhead. He decided that he needed to start a band when he got home, so when he got back to LA he placed the ad that led him to meet James Hetfield, who also loved Motorhead, and start Metallica.

Motorhead is british slang for a "speed demon," some who abuses Amphetamines. And yes, they did. Also, Lemmy was a treasure. “I got hold of my son, I found out he was doing cocaine,” Lemmy lamented. “I said, ‘Look, coke’s all right, but speed’s better. I don’t mind you doing coke. If you ever do smack and I find out, I’ll kill you. Because I’d rather have that on my conscience than watch you die slowly.’”

Lemmy was a straight badass. I met him a few times. But if you want to hear how he was off stage, I suggest watching Dave Grohl talk about him at his funeral. Lemmy was a badass but he was also kind and genuine

I met the band once after an early gig of theirs just after the release of their first single. We were just spotty kids who shouldn`t even have been drinking. I was a fan of Hawkwind so I wanted to see what Lemmy had done with his own band. They were nicest people you could meet, really solid. My only claim to fame...I bought Lemmy a pint.

Met him at the bar of the Marquee club in London. My sister spilt his drink and he turned around and I was expecting to get punched when he realized my sister had done it he just turned from animal to gentleman and I bought him a round of drinks. A real character who was a genuine legend.

Lemmy the lead singer sang me happy birthday and bought me a whisky at the Rainbow in LA. Best birthday ever. He was just walking by our table and saw the decorations and started singing. That dude was fkn awesome. RIP.

They bridged the gap between metal and punk. Probably the first band to do it successfully. They also influenced every band that came after them. Live shows were insane. Your ears would ring for days afterwards.

Lemmy was a regular at The Rainbow Bar and Grill on Sunset Strip. Every day he'd be sat at the end of the bar, JD in one hand, quarters for the gambling machine in the other. Despite being a bona fide rock god, he still went to his local as if he was just a truck driver from around the corner. There is now a life sized statue there in his honour.
