"We are Motörhead and we play Rock 'n' Roll." Lemmy would say that before every show. Lemmy was the epitome of metal. Ozzy and Lemmy were good friends. They did a song called "I Ain't No Nice Guy" with Slash on guitar.
The tale is that drummer Philthy Animal Taylor asked Lem to write a song that would showcase his new double-kick bass drums. The result was the absurd overkill of "Overkill." They'd often close their show with this track, crank the amps, and leave the guitars propped against them, sending peels of feedback thru the building. Absolute rock heaven. RIP.
Actually, this started as a warm-up exercise. Lem and Eddie walked in to find Phil playing this alone on drums and were so blown away by what he was doing that they made an entire song around it. It was never meant to be one.
One of the loudest and most badass bands that I’ve ever heard and seen in concert. Lemmy is a master. He’s the King of Metal. So many great songs to hear from them. They have influenced everyone in the Metal community. Motörhead and Lemmy will live forever. 🤘🏻
I only have one comment what do you mean one of the loudest badass band's???? come on their sound desk goes from 1 to extreme pain THEY ARE THE GREATEST LOUDEST BADASS BAND EVER FULL STOP
I was stone deaf for a week after seeing Motorhead. That moment when you go to bed after a gig, your head hits the pillow and all you can hear is a high pitched whine! 😂😂
@@andrewlaw last time i saw MOTORHEAD WAS THE KISS OF DEATH TOUR 2009 here in Aotearoa new zealand and too see the BEST TWO THREE PIECE BAND'S EVER IN ONE NIGHT AWESOME MOTORHEAD AND STICKY FILTH .STICKY FILTH HAVE BEEN KNOCKING OUT THE T.H.C TARANAKI HARDCORE SINCE 1986
Well he did love The Damned. He turned up at their studio when they were recording Machine Gun Etiquette in '79, and they did some jamming which ended up with a MotorDamned version of Over The Top. Great stuff.
Honestly Motorhead is the Shared ancestor of modern metal and punk. Motorheads Speed and Sabbath's heaviness made metal, But that same speed combine with the grime and roughness of early punk to shape that genre also. Lemmy is simply the greatest Rock n roller of all time.
@@joedec the version on the "aftershock - tour edition" album ... the kicks are so punchy you cant help but fall in love with the song all over again. Undoubtedly a credit to the talent of Mikkey Dee.
Lemmy was absolutely the quintessential larger than life rock star! So many great quotes from him over the years, but my favorite.... "We're the kind of band when we move in next door your lawn dies" 🤘🤘
Motorhead were the Godfathers of Thrash. They were the first band to merge Punk and Rock/Metal laying the foundation for later bands like Venom, EXODUS (The first Thrash band IMHO), Metallica, etc. Lemmy always insisted they were a Rock and Rock band playing the Blues and the reason they played so fast was because they were on speed all the time.
You have to watch this live! Went to many of their concerts. This was always the last song of the night. Leaving Lemmy's last bass tone to hauntingly linger on.
What a song. I was lucky enough to see Motörhead three times, twice at small venues. Being in Lemmy's presence you could feel something special radiating from him, an absolute legend.
My first concert was them in 1996 at the age of 15. My uncles took me and it was the craziest shit ever. I had to leave school the next day because I was completely deaf for 48 hours. Lemmy is god
I saw Ozzy and Motorhead on school trips. Can't recall what order, so they were the 1st or second band I saw. Aged 14 or 15. I took my son to see motorhead when he was aged 10 and again at 17 (eden project, 2015)
Lemmy Kilmister, lead guitarist of The Sam Gopal Band in the 60s, bass guitarist of Hawkwind in the 70s and creator, bass guitarist and lead vocals of Motorhead from the 70s till he passed recently. The song Motorhead that started it all was originally a Hawkwind song. The Motorhead style of music pre-dates thrash by a few years.
He got his singing by chance with hawkwind and it was a big hit. Then they later fired him for getting arrested for drugs and his response was motorhead, which critics hated, but he didn't care about critics he cared about rock music. He was one of the few who would state his early influences being bands like the shadows when they were very much out of vogue, but he didn't care as he knew that all the musicians of his generation grew up listening to those sorts of bands.
Damn, Lex is starting to even key in on how earlier metal bands influenced the next wave. Motorhead, Sabbath, Priest, and Rainbow are the absolute bedrock of all the Metal subgenres.
Motorhead were a bridge from hard rock to metal AND punk. So incredibly influential and that's not even including Lemmy's influence as a pop culture figure and icon.
@@CMBlue you had the titans of lemmy, dio and ozzy, all influenced metal and rock. You can track most bands sound back to one of those 3 usually, though of course there were many other influential artists , but those 3 were amongst the biggest.
This is from 1980, I was 15, this was something we got amped up on then road our dirt bikes wide open with the song still reverberating in our ears. Ya !! Give 'er. Lol
I always remember Lemmy when he was with Hawkwind when he was the vocalist singing "Silver Machine." This is an awesome track; I absolutely love "Overkill." I saw them live a few times... Superb.
Classic fucking Motorhead: Lemmy, Fast Eddie, Philthy Phil. Now we need the classic, vital, vintage, smoking live version from "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith".
In 1979 I was 16 and not long got into all the classic heavy rock/early metal bands when a friend said " 'ere, 'ave you 'eard a band called Motor'ead?" I said no, so he loaned me the single of this song. I was blown away, couldn't believe how fast and how raw it was, plus Lemmy's voice of course. Have never recovered and still love the band to this day.
Hehehe, saw them at Hammersmith on the "No Sleep Til Hammersmith" tour & Brixton about 20 years later. In the 80's the crowds were pure metalheads, in the noughties they had the most diverse audience, metalheads, rockers, punks, skinheads, mods, Hell's Angels, tourists and suits all turned up to see the mighty Motorhead.
Motorhead were very influential on the thrash bands coming out of the early eighties. Check out their song "Orgasmatron", great riff and lyrics, or the duet Lemmy did with Ozzy Osbourne "I ain't no nice guy", kind of a rock ballad with interesting lyrics, and Slash plays the guitar solo. 🎸
you both rock! 🙂you got the "overkill" part on the first listen! 🙂 this song just keeps going and going...i never want it to end, easily my favourite motörhead song. 🥰 this has to be one of the very best encore songs in all of roll & roll. every time you think it's done....just more and more, louder and louder, faster and faster. i was lucky enough to hear / see them play this live twice. a classic!! 🙂
One of the few bands that crossed over the whole punk / metal scene The simplicity and power of The Ramones, the speed and volume of thrash metal Influenced so many bands. RIP Lemmy, is from my hometown in England (Stoke on Trent)
Lemmy. I miss you dude! Not the biggest moterhead fan, but he deserves the respect due to such a great artest. Is his voice great? No! But he started something amazing! Respect!
I love Motorhead and saw them live three times in the 80's including the front row at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, leaning over the stage. They were so loud it was amazing
Remember seeing Motorhead live for the first time and most people where wearing ear plugs ? what the hell .... come out of that gig with my head ringing !! what a night
Oh my . Im lucky boy . I saw these guys on the bomber tour . 15 yrs old , first gig i d been to . With thier 10 , 000 watt system it was like standing behind a jet . Ears ringing for 48 hrs . But well worth it .
I saw them at the Capital Theater in Passaic NJ, in 1985. But wait there's more! The lineup was Hellhammer, Exciter, Mercyful Fate, with Motörhead headlining. I was 15.
Back before there were so many electronic gadgets in our lives we music heads spent all our money on Hi-Fi stereo systems with 20 band graphic equalizer to get the sound just the way we wanted. Whenever yall listen to old stuff and think it doesn't sound as good as today you are getting the actual sound of music if you want todays processed generic sound that you think is good get an equalizer.
You guys just rock. You must do just cos you've got the power doesn't mean you've got the right. This song is a flip the bird to all the big businesses and politicians who stick to us poor and middle class people.
I was lucky enough to meet both Lemmy and drummer Philthy Phil a few times over the years starting in the 80s. I only had to meet Fast Eddie Clarke but he died a few years ago so there goes that.
Great reaction! There are awesome live performances of this song! This ending, starting again…total awesomeness! No, this isn’t thrash… like Lemmy used to say, They are Motörhead and they play Rock’n’Roll! But this is why they were one of the very few bands loved by rockers, punkers and metalheads! Greetings from Germany 👍⚡️🤘
If you wanna hear something different from motorhead, listen to their cover of the song 'heros' by David bowie. And also 'god was never on your side', and 'i ain't no nice guy after all' ft ozzy Osbourne and slash from guns and roses
A Motörhead concert was like getting three for one. You heard the first night, the next day and the day after that. My ears have never rang like they did after a Motörhead concert.
March 1990 Liverpool university I heard this live I had tinnitus for 3 weeks after this ,before health and safety it was the loudest thing I've ever heard
Lemmy is the main writer, singer, bassist. He always said they didn't play metal, ("we play rock and roll, just faster and louder than everyone else") but all the people that came after said Motorhead paved the way for thrash and speed metal. The double bass drum through this whole song was first for that kind of thing. Everyone says Lemmy's voice is a natural result of years of Marlboro's and Jack Daniels, seems like good bet. I wish it was louder in the mix too, but usually it wasn't. Larger than life guy, lots of history, very smart & well read, you should watch his documentary sometime.
One of the best things about watching your reaction videos (apart from that it's fun to see your reactions) is that you don't spend like 4 minutes with introductions. It's traight to the action. That's appritiated. Keep it up!
LMFAO!!! Poor Brad! He's just SO musically dim, and perhaps even soulless, while Lex is absolutely brilliant, perceptive, and FEELS every bit of it... Analogy- Brad is "Chopsticks" and Lex is "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" Oh, and never forget, LEMMY IS A Rock n Roll GOD!
There are a few miserable gits complaining at the inclusion of MOTORHEAD, one of the most influential hard rock bands ever .... It helps to have been to a Motorhead gig or three and felt the energy - the drum solo on this live was spectacular - think he chucked about 100 sticks in the air, one for every beat - it was amazing to watch. And I won;t hear a word said against Lemmy, from my home town, Stoke on Trent. He was unique - had his own style. At least Brad and Lex get it.
