I just finished watching this movie for the first time in my existence. Why had Ive known this and instead giving us blockbuster shit movies where I havent felt the intense feeling as this movie gave me?! Dammit Im here crying in the middle of the night over this artistically done masterpiece. 10/10 for me best film ever.

Great review 👏 it's my favourite movie. So much so I brought my whole family to Palazzo Adriano and visited the Cinema Paradiso museum. Next we went to Isola Procida(my 2nd visit) to the film locations of my 2nd favourite movie IL Postino. We then visited Arezzo to visit the film locations for the movie La Vita è bèlla ... Stanno Tutti Bene...

His sleeping around is contrasted to young love. Ideal past but also ideal to strive for perhaps in the movie scene at the end.

What a nice review. Im glad that you addressed the longer version since i notice that its often ignored. I wanted to to talk a moment about one aspect of the film that sadly wont touch who is not an italian or doesnt talk italian: the dialogues. From what i have seen most of the subtitles for the movie loose a certain kind of depth that is present in the dialogues like the constant swearing of Alfredo or the stutter of the cinema "janitor" or generally all the sicilian dialect but i guess thats expected when a movie gets translated. Beeing someone who grew up in a south itallian ambiente this aspect is another thing that really hits me close when watching Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. Interestingly enough i soon will have to leave this ambiente too like Totò so rewatching that scene really hits even harder now... but enough of me, did you know that the actor that portrait Totò as a child has now a B&B with a Nuovo Cinema Paradiso theme near one of the filming sites? Well, thats all, wish you a good day.

Being a historian in real life, one of my favorite aspects of this movie is that it shows the progression of time through the historic movie clips that are screened in the Cinema Paradiso itself, but also how the little town changes between the late 1940s when it's still deeply traditional to the 1980s when it's become modern and more sophisticated.

Modern & sophisticated but also grubby. There is a lot more traffic a lot more people. Back in the 1940s/50s the town had a local feel to it. Everyone knew everyone which both good but also destructive as human nature is human nature. It reminds of the the town on the outskirts of Naples in the 1999 film The Talented Mr Ripley. Notice how the small kid bus the pinkish transport is the same in both films.

Harisankar R Nair thank you for making this video three quarters of the movie can be described in one single word-INNOCENCE...the chemistry between alfredo and lil toto, him growing up,his love, even the crowds reaction to the movies ..each and every tiny aspect of the movie has that raw pure innocence attached to it

Roger Ebert later went on to say that the shorter version of the film is the superior version despite his score. It’s better and more concise. It’s focused and the better film.

The film is as seen in his own memory. He is looking back with nostalgia for his childhood. What we remember and what really happened are not the same thing. Considering modern movies are all superpowers and utter absurd nonsense, this is as real as it gets. He also his life there isn't a romanticised version of the world. It is completely real as that is actually happening and not a memory. So it is about how we experience life and memories and how we choose to see them make up the person we actually are in the real world. It really is a masterpiece. It is just much more subtle than something like 81/2 which makes it clear what is fantasy and reality. Memory is seen through a lens and we can choose to see life as a collection of wonderful happy and sad moments or as a failure as it ends in tragedy for us all.

Hi Jim long time no see. I didn't know you'd started a new channel. Anyway I just rewatched this today after 25 years or so. Wow it is incredible. It's very high on my all time favourite films list now. I watched the theatrical cut. Great review. I hope to catch up with your new channel over the next couple of days.
