Circus Hop, now with a guide as to what the song might mean: // first off, the song title // "Circus Hop" can be replaced with "Suicide Drop" for clearer meaning It's a comical yet devastating universe // pressures of life piling on But it's still the kind of universe that I deserve // self-depreciation and acceptance The lipstick on my face has bled into my skin It should show a grin // the "should" here signifies the accumulated pain and sadness/depression Up from the sky, I won't want you to cry // "once I'm gone, please don't feel sad/miss me" So here's an act for everyone to sneer at // "an act" references the act of suicide So, sing along, it's such a silly song // driven to partial insanity The cackling carousel, it spins and never stops // "the cackling carosel" is a metaphor for the world and all its evils; also in reference to how the world keeps on going even if they want it to stop/slow down The acrobat who's waiting at the top Should do a Circus Hop // "the acrobat" is the person that's about to commit suicide // "should do a circus hop" reinforcing the idea that suicide is the only option ("circus hop" meaning to jump off and die) (Instrumental) I shall now accept the fact that I'm a failure (You're a failure) // acceptance of self-worthlessness 'Cause I'm still afraid the future might be scarier (It is scarier) // obvious meaning I'll slip while having fun and cut off my own tongue // again references the act of suicide, could also mean self-harm They'll think I was dumb // perceiving that no one will care if they die // same as before (I won't comment on repeated lines) Up from the sky, I won't want you to cry So here's an act for everyone to sneer at So, sing along, it's such a silly song The cackling carousel, it spins and never stops The acrobat who's waiting at the top Should do a Circus Hop // the part where the music slows and jon falls sideways may also signify suicide (Instrumental) // the X marks on the eyes implying death I've said goodbye, I don't want you to cry // notice how "don't" is used instead of "won't", implying present tense and that this is before suicide So have a laugh with everyone but me. // again self-depreciation; also about how they won't be around anymore after suicide // notice how the key of the song shifts one semitone up, further cementing the insanity of the song (key changes upwards are usually meant to add energy) So, sing along, it's such a silly song The cackling carousel, it spins and never stops The acrobat who fell down from the top // in past tense, implying that the suicide already happened/it being too late to stop They did a little drop :) // meaning sure-fire death (the smiley face in the lyrics adds to the suggestion of death) So, sing along, it's such a silly song The cackling carousel, it spins and never stops The acrobat who's waiting at the top // notice how in this part, jon is still smiling, yet also crying, implying insanity and acceptance one more Should do a circus hop // as the last of the lyrics are said, the tempo of the instrumental part gets faster and faster; may be a metaphor for how a person's heart speeds up as they experience free-fall (Instrumental) // the broken sounding music and jon being positioned upside down at the end implies the suicide already succeeded // the evil cackle at the end may mean insanity, but may also be other people seemingly laughing at their demise (self-worthlessness and acceptance again) Additional Notes: // notice how jon's eyes and face get progressively darker and grimmer as the song progresses; transitioning from normal eyes at first with a "backlight" of insanity; to the same eyes, but with the "sparkly glints" gone; and finally to one where the face has a menacingly dark glare on it, still with the "backlight" of insanity in the eyes // the circus theme of the song heavily reinforces the insanity and hopelessness of the predicament of suicide, while acting as a distraction from the underlying morbid lyrics Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read all this, and very special thank you to Jon for making such a masterpiece of a song.
i feel like “the lipstick on my face has bled into my skin, it should show a grin” refers to cutting yourself, indicating that doing so will make you “happier”, because it’s a popular way to cope with depression. but that’s just my take, hahaha
The part at 2:25 really started to get me. You’d expect with that pose for them to fall forwards, like an acrobat preparing to do a circus trick, but once they start to fall backwards you realise their truest intentions. You’d expect a net to be there if they fell towards, but that’s clearly not the case. It’s also indicates them not wanting to see the point of death or where to ground is, looking up to the sky and pretending they are falling like in a show, or pretending the net is under them.
This thing I really admire about this video is the way the depressing and insane part of the video slides in without you notice it. At the "So sing along" part of the song, the shine on the eyes and the blush disappear and the mouth becomes larger, making the video seem more crazed. The video has some black blots at the end. The lyrics slowly start to become more unsettling, but you don't hear it because the song itself is still sounding upbeat and happy. And, compared to the beginning and the end, the lyrics are louder and more insane. also i just realized that at the end there is a bit of maniacal laughter
@@taipanguts wait you right! At the first of that his eyes and her blush is still on there but when the second his blush and her eyes is gone and finnaly the last one he is completely depressed and kinda crazy at the same time his blush and eyes are gone but her face looks more happier and the song became more louder and of course at the end the acrobat who fell down from the top ~~~~~should do a circus hop! ~~~~~ (well if we thinking more it's like súîçīdë word. Oh ya and if you turn on the sub at 3:26 it say "they did a little drop :)" And of course again there's 2 meaning of that word (sorry im bad at English)
1:12- normal, cute. 2:10- eye shines gone, signifying something is wrong... 3:16- the mouth got wider and more facial wrinkles (if you look close enough, the right eye is twitching), even worse. 10/10 on the detail. Bravo 👏
the third chorus also has a reddish-black vignette effect similar to when you're about to die in a videogame. Everything also seems to be either darker-colored or more reddish
Okay so here's the thing: I discovered JonKaGor and this song on Spotify, where there are no visuals and the lyrics aren't written. Now here's the thing: my brain tends to drown out the lyrics of a song and just focus on the melody, so to me this song was cheerful so far. Then I found this video, saw the trigger warning, went to the comments, saw the analysis... Needless to say I don't see this song the same way anymore.
Lol same I first encountered this while doing homework I was watching Bnha villain deku (an anime) and it was a music video and this was it while doing homework I was like this is a fun song when I found this I saw the analysis and how it’s so deep I’m like oh.. I’m never gunna see this the same ever-
I feel like this is what Japanese people feel like listening to the depressing ass vocaloid songs hidden behind the veil of happiness. And just like the many times these themes in those songs slip past me due to the lack of being bilingual, I think it'll be the same to them.
I just noticed that the moment he starts singing "it's such a silly song" the first time his eyes are shining with delight, the second time they're empty and almost manic. The third time it almost sounds angry and forced. It's quite interesting.
Here’s my take on the chorus: “So sing along it’s such a silly song” - In a joking, hurtful way, telling people to “sing along” (go along with the crowd, who’s making fun of this one person). “The cackling carousel it spins and never stops” - The “cackling carousel” is a crowd of people who constantly target and bully this one person. “The acrobat who’s waiting at the top should do a circus hop” - The “acrobat” is the person getting bullied and harassed. The “circus hop” is representing suicide (jumping off a building). This shows that the “cackling carousel” of people (bullies) has driven the “acrobat” (victim) to suicide. This is just my take on it :)
certainly one way to look at it. For me i see it from the class clown mindset, someone kind hearted but see themselves as worthless, choosing to try and make people laugh at their pain to hid the misery they feel inside.
If i was getting bullied i just shut my ears *not in a normal way in my that i can literally shut down my ears* and i was lucky to have this shit ears :)
Showed this to my step sister and guests, they were confused. Upbeat but the lyrics are literally a suicide note, they like the instrumental part but by god did they hate the lyrics
Don't know if it's just me, but you can hear sirens after the "circus hop" happens. If this was intended, then provs to you! It really added to the realness of how losing hope and acting on it results in consequences that effect everyone.
Well, when I listened the instrumental version of it and I turn down the volume a bit, in the part of "so sing all long it's just a silly song" I hear a quite ambulance siren.
I can hear them too, but noticed only after reading this. If you look closely there are also blue and red lights in the bottom of the video in that part
@@un_tizio_a_caso2701 I really think that the small things elevate the song, and its really important to hone in on every little detail to really appreciate the love and work poured into a song, especially one such as this.
This song caught me so off guard. The lyrics just turn dark in a second in the second part. I noticed that the lyrics were always depressing. “The acrobat who’s *waiting* at the top”, he’s thinking before jumping. Wow there’s so much symbolism. This is a sort of a Dajiobanai song, the beat of the song is so catchy and happy but the lyrics are super depressing. Sometimes the beat doesn’t make you notice the lyrics until they get darker. This is now my fav song. Jon you’re doing a fantastic job and giving as such bops! Keep it up!
Not sure if I’m the only one who noticed this but the fish with the little horn things coming out of their head look like hands, pointing at him, perhaps making fun of him
I am disturbed yet mildly pleased. The meaning of the song only hit me halfway through when the character was visibly and audibly going insane, The bright colors remind me that suicide is often seen as a good thing to those commiting it, and the fact that the character sees this as a circus act is definitely one of the more disturbing factors. I will say, this is gloriously composed and animated, and the metaphor is truly well done.
⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️ I'm unsure if you know, but the name "Circus Hop" actually has a very deep meaning, I don't want to get this comment rejected or something, so I recommend you search the meaning to understand! And yes, I fully agree :) (Edited for TW!
This song got stuck in my head so I tried playing it over and over so I would get sick of it and want to stop listening but now I only want to listen to it more
I feel like the expression is more distraught or afraid but op doesn't want to frown because like the song says, "its such a silly song" but I guess that is up to interpretation.
Only at the end did I realize that by "carousel that spins and never stops" Yon ment that life goes on and on and on, never stopping. how did I miss that. Amazing metaphor!
I already knew this song was going to be a bop from the beginning when I was mixing it, but seeing the animation and this video to go along with it makes me appreciate the song and all of your hard work even more. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to mix this track for you. It’s such a bop!
i feel called out. its 12:30 am. im still listening to this. i found this channel yesterday. i am addicted. this is literally the first song i have memorized the lyrics to and i have terrible memory. seriously this is really catchy and i keep noticing more and more details
For me it was at second watch for some reason the first time I found the song mid but the second time I was like This song must be hung in a museum this is the greatest song ever created and today it’s a Earworm one that I suddenly sing at max valume around my house Also sorry for bad spelling
Anyone else noticed that after it showed him falling, there's a drawing of a clown fish leaving another younger clown fish? After he "died", it shows a fish leaving another fish, I think he represents the fish that's leaving, and the audience is the fish that's being left behind by him.
Maybe it's the other way around. The lyrics show that he is under the impression that nobody would care if he was gone: "I won't want you to cry." "I'll slip while having fun, and cut off my own tongue. They'll think I was dumb." "So have a laugh, with everyone but me." Maybe the clown fish leaving represents the audience moving on without him without hesitation.
this hurts, the end when they say "such a silly song" and it progressively sounds like your voice is breaking more and more till it sounds just normal made me just uncontrollably laugh, it reminds me of the times i've had an episode where i scared my friends because i started hysterically laughing four a good 10 minutes telling them to laugh along and that it's so funny over and over again and this probably hits closer to home than any other song that you've made and i weirdly hate but love it
Is it just me or is the third verse more ominous that the first two? Even though they are completely identical? Edit: Its the bags under the eyes. Strange how a small unnoticed detail can somehow change the entire feel of a scene.
@@gamicxsam3793 yeah, but the way he does it is that, at least to me, it wasn't extremely noticeable unless you stare at it for a bit. but then, at 3:11 it comes more together and your mind recognizes how it looked in the previous frame where his facial expression was off, but not extremely noticeable and that's pretty neat imo
Yeah, at first at 1:08 and 1:17 hes happy, his eyes are shiny, and he looks like hes enjoying himself, but then at 2:06 and 2:14 the shines in his eyes are gone and he looks like hes pretending to be happy. Lastly, at 3:12 and 3:20 theres no shine to him and theres more of a shadow cast over his face along with looking more dejected and worried, and at the same time happy like "I'm terrible and deserve to suffer" kinda feeling, really cool 😎
When I first heard this song, it genuinely pained me because it's so incredibly accurate to what I've experienced for a very large portion of my life leading up to now(I'm better now!). The truth of the song was so cuttingly real to me, and accurate, that I didn't know whether to listen to this song again, or to cast it away, never to be heard again. ...As it turns out, I actually got used to the song very quickly, and now instead of feeling hurt by it, I feel heard, and comforted that others have felt the way I have. At first it killed me to listen to, but now I'm dying to hear it again. Or, I guess, you know, living to hear it again. Helped me compile and reconcile some thoughts; weirdly therapeutic. Thank you for making songs on this topic!
RU-vid seemed to have deleted my pinned comment This song is not in any way a cry for help. If you're planning on using the song, please read the description. Oh by the way, if I love your analysis comment, it’s a good job from me, but whether it’s the actual meaning or not, is a secret ! EDIT: ALSO I REALLY APPRECIATE THE DEEP ANALYSIS !! IT MEANS TONS FOR A SONGWRITER TO READ THOSE EDIT2: No there is not a second pinned comment i don't see it it doesn't exist EDIT3: Added part about analysis
This song is fantastic. The cheery visuals get you hyped up, but when you notice the depressing undertone you start noticing more and more details as the tune goes on. Such as the lack of reflection in the eye for a good duration, giving the character a more spoopy vibe. It seems like a completely different song entirely after that. I love it.
1:12 3:13 I noticed that at the beginning of the song there is a shine in the eyes of the character (in the chorus of the song specifically) and at the end of the song the shine is completely gone! I love that attention to detail!
If i'm reading this right, which i think i am, the whole meaning of the song is basically 'Suicidal person pretends to be happy for the sake of their friends, but really wish to die.' I relate to that, I used to feel like that.
This song made me want to pretend to be happy to make others happy which just made me feel worse as I don’t want to relate to a suicidal person I don’t want to want to end my life so I have decided to prioritize my own mental health to pervert that
i actually couldnt listen to this song for a while since i found it at what was probably my lowest, but now that my situation has improved, i can come back to this and truly appreciate the sheer artistry of both the song itself and the mv that goes along with it. it really is just as captivating as it was the first time i watched it, even four years later
@@ryusseii It's simple, really. There's nothing wrong with it. But reputations get messed up by the dark side of the fandom, and the dark side of the furry fandom is notorious for being particularly messed up. Just people generalizing like they normally do. I personally like to judge people individually and not based on the fandom(s) they are part of.
ok, so the way I interpret this song is using humour to cope with real pain. When you're suffering a lot of the time you put on an act, hence the circus theme. Sometimes u can express these dark jokes and they have underlying suffering, like a cry for help or attempt to communicate your pain. But it's difficult to talk about these things so it's easier to put on a face. Maybe you become so accustomed to these awful feelings that you don't realize u are spiralling out of control. Thats just how this music spoke to me. With everything going on the future is scary, I just want to say to anyone reading this I am sending my love
The musical arrangement, the use of dissonance, the slight changes in expression, the textures, the colors, the use of delay and filters, the transitions, that full and present chorus, the sudden stops and wonky/goofy noises, every ounce of love and detail put into this is absolutely stunning. You have perfected the art of drama and subtlety. Bravo. Can't imagine the work that went into this. As for interpretation, a lot has already been said that captures a good chunk of it. I think something less spoken of is the metaphor for how people pretend everything is ok, which is basically an embodiment of this video. Not just the person who is struggling, but everybody around them, ignoring the statistics, the suffering, and putting on an ignorant smile. In particular the line "I'll slip while having fun, and cut off my own tongue, they'll think I was dumb" hits me as a metaphor for how, after silencing oneself with the "circus hop" people often look at the "acrobat" as someone who was weak, and made a stupid, illogical decision, rather than as a victim who couldn't keep fighting anymore. Often, victims are looked down upon, and rather than learning from their loss, people erase them and go on with the charade. It's almost like entertainment in that way that suddenly, temporarily, the victim has everybody's attention with this act. It also may just be a metaphor for being yourself and finding joy, only for others to bring you down and ridicule you for doing something that makes you happy. It could also be a way of saying that once they do the hop, everything they were before won't matter. They'll be labeled, and any joy, any part of who they really were will be overshadowed by this final act.
Apparently, as a short summary, this is a song about someone who thinks their life is a joke/ circus for everyone else to laugh at their failure. The acrobat is him at the top of a build, and the Circus Hop is him jumping of the building. A bit deeper analysis 0:44 - 0:50 him trying to fake a smile. 0:52 - 0:59 him not wanting people to be sad when he dies 1:11 - 1:15 him saying how people never stop teasing/laughing at him Also notice how ever time the chorus comes he gets madder and madder. 1:07 2:05 3:11 And finally, him physically falling: 3:35
While he might look angrier, I noticed that his voice got more desperate throughout the song, as though slowly losing his grip on some small shred of hope.
I’ve seen this so many times already but it mesmerizes me every time. I still can’t get over the Circus theme and just how creepy but happy the song is. I’ve said this so many times before but GOD DANG IT JON YOU ARE SO TALENTED 💞💕💖✨Im so happy for you !!
Wow. You're probably one of the only few artists I know who can consistantly give that shiver down your listeners spines. And by god is the song impactfull. I honestly listened to it about three times over before thinking, hold on... Best of all my luck to anybody who's experienced this. All of my wishes go to you.
Jon, feed your OC some fish. He didn’t have enough and got so sad that it drove the poor cat to the point of committing a circus hop. Good thing cats always fall on their feet though *Still. Give the kitty some fish*
I dont know if someone already said this but I think the fishes may do reference to the famous phrase "sleeping with the fishes" meaning the cat sucefully commited suicide (Im sorry if I misspelled somenthing my original language isnt english). Also I love the fact that they added a suicide hotline in the desc for ayone who needs help,I think its kinda sweet from their part.

I've seen a lot of analysis comments, but didn't see anyone mentioning the fish theme? For what i know, fish is a symbol of "silence". Not in a usual meaning, but more of a "silencing yourself" kind of meaning and that is especially gorgeous in context of how well made and thought out everything is. UPD: GUYS it's been 6 months I am well educated now that Yon likes fish a lot I cannot still get notifications about an old theory I've made qwq
GOD THIS SLAPS SO HARD???!?!?!?!?!? i also really like how the circus is underwater... gives off the feel that the acrobat in the song is drowning in his sorrow
The tittle of the song kinda make something little to irl circus.. Sorry I'm bad at English but I'll do my best So, the song it's like a mixed between suicide and *work* yes like working as a clown in the circus yes. We know that circus is half gone in society, and of course when we go to a circus we already see all clown keeps smiling everytime but, they might still hiding the dark memories inside them. a circus is a work but they practice so hard to make perfect acrobat for people and of course again " so have a laugh to everyone but me.. " It like a work in real life meaning we waste so much time to work for money and because circus is becomes more disappear from the society it hard to make money. And when it say when he fell while having and cut her own tounge meaning that while playing the acrobat he accidentally fall and cut it but because it's a circus "everyone thinks that part of the clumsiness so they ignore it and just laughing at him" But of course not the manager tho, the manager is mad at him because he fall while doing some acrobats. It's like a rl work ok? I'm sorry for the English ok?
I wouldn't necessarily call this song creepy, I'd call it a sad song. It's something I can relate to, sadly, this song is literally a message from one person to another before they kill themselves. There's nothing creepy about it. It's oddly cheery and absolutely upsetting more than anything, a person spending all of their energy to make their loved ones happy so that way all of their business is finished, to say that they love them, before they're gone.
my grandpa basically did this before he tried to commit suicide, fortunately he was alright but i remember them explaining to me how he had so much to pay he just couldnt so he spent all of the remaining money to take me and my family to a circus before the night he tried to commit suicide. its a good song whit a strong message, assuming you are correct.
This song is honestly relatable, I'm the class clown and everyone thinks I'm just always so happy and makes jokes, but on the inside I just want to cry..
I really like the way he said "and cut off my own tongue". The first time I listened to this I wasn't paying attention to the lyrics and thought he was speaking Spanish or something.
DUDE JON AAAAAAA G9D WHERE DO I EVEN START GAAHH OKAY FIRST OF THE FLIPPEN VISUALS SHSUD *_THE FLIPPEN VISUALS_* LIKE HOLY HECK OKAY okay I really really really love how scenes get a little more crazed as it goes like I noticed how the eyes started to be come idk worrisome? Idk how to describe it but small details like that it's just so unbelievable like I cant express how much I love them and one dont get me started on the vocals, I'm not the best singer and all but like AA I love how I could like feel the emotion in your voice like GOD this whole video was such an experience!! Everyone did a fantastic job on this too like 😭 just amazing work man
@Kyle Miave A fursona is an animal character who represents the creator. Usually one that stands on two legs and wears clothes (though doesnt have to be) A persona is a character to represents the creator usually a human
The ending scene in the last few seconds is really unnerving if you payed attention. The characters eyes starting out happy and full of light, then turning blank and empty; to insanity as the song turns more demented. All of that to end off with a slowed circus theme with the character upside down is a hard tell for what it means. If something has happened to you, to anyone here, please, take the necessary time to find help do that something already bad, turns even worse.
The little details are what help bring this song together so well. Even if most people don't notice it at first, the at start innocent and happy looking JonKaGor, as time goes on he continues to lose bits and pieces of his sanity, the shine in his eyes seem to get darker, and halfway through the video the shine in the eyes go away, so does the blush, the talking fish (That I am pretty sure represents voices in your head that never shut up). Not to mention, the fact that as the video goes on as well you can see the increasing madness in his eyes, the way he poses himself, and in the small little "Flashback Film" ( 2:54 ) section of the video, its basically telling you that despite everything, remember all those good times you had with Jon. Whether it was as his friend, or as a viewer. I'm probably nerding out way too much to this video, but this is the kind of stuff that makes me just fall in love with this video. If you're still working at all Jon (I'm not entirely sure if you are), whether irl or on youtube, keep this amazing stuff up. I cannot believe how talented one person can be, and it's just absolutely amazing.
SO I just realised the meaning/symbolism of the fish. I'll copy paste the meanings here. Clown fish (Or the Nemo fish, the orange one with white and black stripes) "Clown fish or Anemone fish are important spirit guides because their spiritual guidance is to build, wisdom, knowledge and teachings that can be helpful in overcoming challenges in the world. ... Those who have clown fish or anemone fish as their totem animal also tend to hide within dangerous situations." I also find it fun that a CLOWN fish is in the circus, I don't know if that was the intent or not. Unicorn fish (the fish with the nose) "The Unicorn fish is symbolic that you are to acknowledge your gifts, beliefs + honor your true worth or self. Until you can truly face yourself in the mirror and accept your own thoughts, will you be able to truly express them without restraint to another or others." I just found this interesting, but these are just speculations. ALSO it seems like his hat and boots are decorated with fish eggs, and the feathers on the hat looks like fins off a fish 🤔
In fact, as a child, I saw a desperate acrobat fall to his death.. to me.. It's very scary to sing along to this beautiful music.. I shudder when I hear that....
@@adameq7303 Actually, I don't think I'll ever be okay, but.. Anyway, thanks for your concern. Although I can still say that even after all this time, it causes great fear and periodically appears in my nightmares.
this legit feels like a vocaloid song and wldnt be surprised if someone made a vocaloid cover to this. the production, the art, the song itself, theyre all amazing
one of my favorite things in stories is when the character is at a low point and everything else begins rushing rather giving the moment time to settle. everything is going to fast for them to keep up with and i start feeling like im drowning with them. this song is great example of that feeling as it speeds up towards the end
Jon, I think you are trying to make a secret story out of your songs. This includes Artificial Abandonment, Bitter and Blunt, Circus Hop and Another Misake. It starts in Artificial Abandonment. Jon and Mello has a breakup with each other as he can’t be trusted as the song says “I’ll be removed and you will be gone”. His life became a mess and that what happens in Another Mistake. As the songs says “Why do I keep on trying, I’ll just end up lying!”, it suggests that no matter what he do, he will always mess things up. His life is a lie. Then they’re are two endings, one is Bitter and Blunt the good ending and the other is the bad ending in Circus Hop. In Bitter and Blunt, he never gives up and try to fix his mistakes. Then he became successful and reunited with Mello and his friends. The bad ending is in Circus Hop. He got employed by some people to be a clown at their circus. He took this opportunity so that he could see Mello again in the circus. But after a while, she doesn’t come to the circus. He feels abandoned and uncared by Mello just like how he is very untrustworthy to Mello. In a performance, he singed the circus hop song in a performance and killed himself by falling off the rope. But hey that’s just a theory, a music theory!!!
The lightheartedness of the instruments combined with the dark themes gives the song such a haunting vibe Edit: just noticed that those weird long-nosed fish that appear right before "the hop" probably represent the suicidal thoughts of the character
Ok, we all know that this song clearly refers itself to suicide and depression, but, still, I will analyze some facts and parts of the song: SUMMARY: The song, as it shows itself, represents a circus, but, taking it into metaphoric facts, it could represent the OP's point of view of their own life. They see themselves as a joke to be laughed at, and their entire life it's just a circus that brings joy, laughs and happiness to other people, they are their own clown and puppet, using their pain as the focus of their jokes. "Circus Hop" would be refering to the exact moment of their suicide, and I will explain why later into this comment. Now, it's moment to take some meanings out of the lyrics. MEANING OF THE LYRICS: "It's a comical yet devastating universe [...]" - in this part, as it is obvious, OP's saying how the universe we live it's so devastating, filled with pain & fear to the point it's actually hilarious, a reference to dark humor itself, wich people normally do to bring a little laugh at certain things that happen in our world that actually are, kinda depressing. The classic "laugh to not cry". "But still the kinda universe that I deserve [...]" - this part, OP basically says that they are so miserable that they deserve the pain and suffering they are feeling. They feel so horrible about themselves that thinks this is all happening because they deserve for something they done wrong, even if they can't really tell what they did or why is it wrong. "The lipstick in my face, was bled into my skin [...] It should show a grin [...]" - Here, OP's explaining that they've hide their pain with a fake smile and a simulation of "them", when in fact, it was all a lie. They faked it for so much time that, now, they can't really tell who they actually are or if their "fake me" is their actual self, wich explains why their "lipstick" bled. Their mask had become their identity making them forgot who they were. "Up from the sky, I won't want you to cry [...]" - OP starts to think about the people they know, and starts to feel even more bad about themselves because they know their suicide will make their loved ones cry. "So here's an act, for everyone to sneer at [...]" - The "act" is nothing more than their suicide. They are saying that their suicide will be something funny to be turned into a joke. "So sing along, it's such a silly song [...]" - The "silly song" it's, once again, OP's point of view of their own life, seeing it as a silly thing to be joked around. They are basically saying "hey, no need to feel bad about me, just take it easy and let's joke around!", so nobody have to feel pity of them or try to help. "The clacking carousel, it spins and never stops [...]" - that part was pretty hard for me, but, after some thinking, I believe the "carousel" it's a metaphor for the depression they suffer. The reason for this it's because when OP says "it spins and never stops", was a way of saying that, no matter how they try or how much time passes, they never stop feeling the endless pain or sadness they always felt, as if they're walking in circles forever and ever...See? A carousel of pain and sadness that won't stop spinning around, no matter how you try to turn it off. "The acrobat who's waiting at the top [...]" - The acrobat, my folks, it's no one else more than OP, waiting at a top of a building for their act (suicide). "Should do a circus hop [...]" - As I said before, the entire thing of "circus hop" it's related entirely to OP's suicide. Why? As I said before, the acrobat it's actually OP at a top of a building. So, if the acrobat it's supposed to do a hop, what would the hop mean? Of course, OP jumping off the building. "I shall now accept the fact that I'm a failure [...]" - This, at it reveals itself, it's OP saying how they feel so uneasy and horrible about themselves, feeling like they are a failure or something that shouldn't exist. And the deep voices saying "you're a failure" are the voices of their head, assuring and remembering them of these thoughts. "Cause I'm afraid that the future might be scarier [...]" - In here, OP's saying that they're afraid that in the future things might get worse for them, more things will happen to hurt their heart or even, they could never cure themselves of the depression or feel happy again. The deep voices saying "it is scarier" are, once again, the voices of their head, making them believe that every nightmare will become real. "I'll slip while having fun, and cut off my own tongue [...] They'll think I was dumb [...]" - In here, as the same case of the "carousel" thing, could be a metaphor, but this time, about bullying (or at least, I believe). It could be that OP was referring that, when they were a happy and enthusiastic person, their happiness were destroyed by some accidents he made (the slipping part), and then, people started to laugh at their face, making them be seen as a "dumb" or "stupid" kid. The whole "cut off my own tongue" part could be their way of saying that, after these accidents and the bullying they've suffered, it felt like they lost a part of their own self, as if it was taken from their body. "I've said goodbye, I don't want you to cry [...]" - Later in the song, this part happens between (or after) OP's suicide, probably when their suicide letter was found, were they say goodbye and ask their loved ones to not cry over their death. "So have a laugh with everyone but me [...]" - In the suicide letter, OP also asks to their loved ones to live a happy life, a life that he couldn't live. To go further than them, and be happy with someone else, something that he wasn't able to do thanks to their depression. "The acrobat who fell down from the top [...]" - Here the lyrics change drastically, changing also it's meaning. While in the beginning of the song, it meant moments before OP jump, in here, the end, means when they finally jumped of the roof. "They did a little drop [...]" - The drop is a reference to OP's body impact on the ground after jumping, killing them instantly. BONUS: "Faces" If you watch the video, you can definitely notice that, in the chorus, the faces change by the end of the song. They become more panicked and insane. This would represent OP's expressions while they jumped of the roof and were falling to the ground. These would be the very first moments were OP felt alive, and, the chance of two thoughts. 1°: OP starts to notice that they didn't actually wanted to die, and the insane and panicked expressions would represent the fact that they were starting to rethink about the suicide plan, and wanted to revert the situation before they hit the ground and die. The tears in the eyes of the acrobat would be tears of fear, and the insane smile would be caused because they knew that there was no way of coming back, and they had to accept the cold and hard death that was coming for them. 2°: OP's finally feeling alive for the first time of their life (even if for brief moments) thanks to the adrenaline, and, it's relieved that they might reach peace and happiness once hit the ground. They are overwhelmed that, after so much time, they'll finally be able to smile and reach peace. The tears in the eyes of the acrobat are tears of joy, and the insane smile would be caused due to the adrenaline and the overwhelming feeling of hope for the final peace. ENDING: P.S: I know everyone knows this, but, just in case; these are NOT the actual meanings of the song! It's just what I believe it means by analyzing the lyrics and videclip, but Jon could have intended to express another thoughts and meanings into the lyrics and I ended up not understanding. Still, it was pretty fun and I liked a lot doing this. P.S²: If there is any grammatical errors or so, please keep in mind that english is not my main language. I'm actually a 15 y/o brazilian who's still learning the foreign language that is english and, to be honest, I am (still) not very good at it...So, if there is any mistake, please warn me so I can fix it and maybe even learn something new! P.S³: Nice song btw :)
There were a few typos that I noticed, "They'll thing I was dumb" the thing is supposed to be think, but I was still able to understand the analysis that you did. I also wanted to mention the fish used in the visuals. The main two I saw in the song were Clown fish and Unicorn fish. (There are Sea horses in the carousel part as well.) The Clown fish are probably there because it's a circus theme, but I've been thinking about the Unicorn fish. Whenever I see it in the video, it makes me think of someone pointing and laughing at OP, like they're there to emphasize OP's desire for their death to be seen as a joke.
This is so deep and I friggin love it! I've also got an idea about what the fish could mean... sleeping with the fishes, which is another way to say someone's passed away. (Also, your theories are incredibly well written! Lol I wouldn't have guessed English isn't your first language, it's my native language and you're better at it than me)
@@thomasslam2441 Oh yeah, sorry, I'll be fixing the mistake, thanks for pointing out! About the fish, I didn't paid too much attention to them because I thought it was just something Jon used to make the drawings more cutesy and even match the fact that his mascot it's a cat, but, taking it into (once again) metaphoric facts, actually make sense the unicorn fish been used to represent the OP's desire to be a joke. I'll try to analyze it once again, and, if I get something out of it, I'll add here :)
@@blueskydusk Lol, thanks! It's really nice to hear that! And about the whole thing of "sleeping with the fishes", I didn't knew it had this meaning. If it was what Jon intended to represent, it's very smart!
Maybe the part where "The acrobat whos waiting at the top, should do a circus hop" May refer to bullies speaking down on Jon, now finally getting there wishes.
Not only did the acrobat's eyes get dimmer, but so did the scenery the more and more he wanted to die until he finally killed himself (I am guessing he drowned himself by the constant fish theme) and that fact that some background scenes look like blood could also mean something else.
I believe that fish are either because the creator likes fish (Thank you Onara Tao) or theme of circus, clown fish. Another comment pointed out (that was unintended) that the other fish look like hands pointing at the cat like they are laughing at him. Considering the other theme of circus, he supposedly killed himself from jumping (Circus hop) and later in the song it says "The acrobat did a little drop" (or something along those lines) backing up the statement. Of course you are able to think what you would like though.
Nah, they just like fish lol. They prob jumped off building since circus hop means that, and also it basically shows him and talks about him “taking a circus drop”
@@Bedrockpanda-yw2jo To my knowledge (aka google) a "circus hop" is making a stunt out of killing oneself. doesn't necessarily involve drops, but here it definitely does considering the animation, and the fact that the singer is the "acrobat"
Its a really nice detail when at 1:42 The song goes "I'll slip while having fun and cutting off my own tongue" After saying that the next thing he says is with a bunch of Th' "They'll Th-ink Th-I Th-was Th-dumb" showing his tounge got cut off and that sentence was very Th Sorry if I am wrong on this this means no harm and very very sorry again if this is wrong. Edit: also this line does sounds more different than the others TO ME
I didn’t really know the meaning of the song the first time, until I heard that the acrobat dropped. Which already told me the meaning of the song (despite me never seeing the MV before’
I have a message for everyone who is in a depression: • Mistakes don't exist, lessons do. As long as you are sure that bad things you did in the past won't happen again, you're totally fine. • If you think that you're a faillure or a bad person, look into a mirror and say: "I am NOT a faillure / a bad person (anymore)!" But not only say it, believe it. Believe in yourself. • In most cases, one apology is enough. If someone doesn't accept your apology, it's their problem, not yours. • If someone deserves more than an apology, for example some money for compensation, give this to them, but don't give them more than you can give. You don't have to give them your life as an apology. • Don't say you don't deserve something you achieved. You should be proud of the positive things in your life. • Please smile. You might be in a huge depression, but you don't have to banish all the happiness from your life
Jelly S you are right but do you really think that people with depression care about what someone one internet, if you what to help (which you are but not by much) them, talk to them and help them live.
Idk if I do or do not have depression but I have some or most of the symtoms. I also wanted to let you know that thanks for the advices you wrote here, I'll try them as soon as I can.
I love the details of the eyes whenever the "Sing along" started also the "Acrobat" - I really dont know how to explain i just woke up singalong Happi: 1:07 No sparkles on the eyes: 2:05 Those shadow stuff started to appear on the nose and the eye: 3:11 acrobat Happi: 1:15 No sparkles on the eyes again: 2:13 More shadows though looks kinda the same: 3:19 The "Acrobat whos waiting at the top" Really caught my attention that Like, An person who is waiting on the top of building, "To do an circus hop" (No pun or joke intended) To Jump off, Pretty suic@dl3
I don't know if you're going to read this, but damn this really explains a lot I've gone through and still do. I have some serious depression that is a result of a traumatic experience, being abused by my mother, and ever since I've dealt some serious depression. It's not something that I can just easily fix, but this music video seriously hit me hard because of what I'm dealing with before I even turned 10 years old. I'm 19 now and this really made me cry a good bit because of how it accurately describes what I've gone through and what I think about life and the world. I do want to keep this relatively short, but I've been there where I would be at that ledge or the knife is just close to my throat. But I never have gone through with it, but prior to my planned suicide I would try to make people happy and well make sure people wouldn't cry. I still deal with suicidal thoughts today, but never actually planning something like how I was when I was younger. I try to work with the depression that I have and try to mitigate it. Thankfully, I have the suicide lifeline number on me at all times and thank for their service. Thank you for making this video and song, I just found out about your work and it's amazing!
I really love this song, the way it shows the spiral into insanity of someone who is probably depressed trying to entertain others so they can have what they cannot. I really like the instrumental break around 2:20 because the animation blurring and the music together make it seem like as if the acrobat is having some sort of panic attack or mental breakdown during a performance. I think it shows a really good perspective of an entertainer that's doing there job to help other's at the expense of themselves which, from what I know, isn't too uncommon. Its something a lot of people might not know about because, like in the start of the video, it looks like their enjoying themselves, smiling, energetic, and happy, but it turns out to just be a facade to try to not ruin the experience for the people watching or listening.
Plot twist: He did not fall and die. He is just trying to scare his audience with the song and when her think he is about to fall, he hang himself upside down as he has acrobatic skills.
This is gonna be kinda off topic but this comment reminds me of a performance at a Cirque De Soleil (I'm pretty sure that's what it's called) show I saw where a woman was essentially dancing in the air by using a 50 ft tall red sheet to stay in the air, tangling herself in the fabric for leverage in her elaborate dance. The final part of this act has her role up the sheet, wrapping it around her, until she's almost at the top. Then, she begins to unravel, causing her to descend rapidly. It looks like she's falling, but before she can hit the ground, she catches herself on the sheet again. She's upside down now, her face less than a foot away from the ground, and the stage goes dark.
I didn’t realize this was about a suicidal performer. When I first heard this song on Spotify I thought it was a bitter sweet song about a performer/ringmaster who would stop existing once his last performance was complete so he decided to go out with a bang. Also this was my favorite song, but now I’m not so sure.
Small changes : During verse 1's chorus, the character has blush on his face however in verse 2 it disappears and in verse 3 it is replaced by eyebags / eye strain.
First chorus: normal Second chorus: stars, pink cheeks, and other eye details gone Third chorus: Mouth grows in size, feautures in face become more extreme
