Clarisonic Mia Battery Replacement Part 1: Replacing with the Eneloop

Part 2 video - • Clarisonic Mia Battery...
This video shows how I crack open the Mia (same for Mia 2). Replacing the original battery with Eneloop battery, which is IMO - the best rechargeable battery at its price range (last up to 10 years with up to 2100 charge cycles). You can use any rechargeable AA but I just want this sucker to last longer time before I fix it or toss it.
The BEST and FASTEST way to open the case, is to use a Rotary Tool like a Dremel or Black & Decker RTX-B with Dremel #409 Cut-off Wheels. It's fast and safe, trust me! But if you don't have it ready and don't want to spend that $50. A knife and 30-45 minutes will do the work.
Notice I didn't use glue to seal the gap. Instead, I used Silicone Tape alone. So if anything goes wrong, I won't have to go thru the painful cracking process. For complete sealing (PLEASE DO!), I recommend first using Hot Glue gun with Precision Tip (clamp it while you are doing it). Then apply Silicone Tape like I did for the best sealing result.
$5 Silicone Tape: X-Treme Tape TPE-XZLCLR Silicone Rubber Self Fusing Tape 1" x 10'

*This battery reconditioning program exceeded my presumptions. It worked on any drill battery, several AA and AAA batteries, **batery.repair** and any camera battery. The steps are simple and the act itself is exciting to do. No matter what type of battery you`ve got, it is sure to function again!*

You could become a millionaire if you started replacing batteries on Clarisonic for people. The amount of people complaining that their Clarisonic died on them and NOT receiving help from Clarisonic is overwhelming!

The made it that way so you have to toss and buy new. The Philips shaver I bought 10 yrs ago still running/charging strong. Clarisonic is total BS. If I was to replace battery as a service, it would be hard to guarantee 100% waterproof after resealing, more of a headache...

Wonderful. Thank you for posting this classy video. Opening was the biggest challenge, and my Dremel with cutting wheel was much quicker (as you also point out in your responses to comments). Also, I probably would have thrown away the old batteries without checking polarity orientation first, so thank you for including that. I resealed the unit with a product from Liquid Nails, clamping for 24 hrs. Neatly sealed (smoothed with Dremel sander on low speed) and works like new. Wife very happy and impressed.

I noticed when you soldered the final connection the green LED started blinking. Mine also blinked green when I soldered the final connection, however when I press the power button it just blinks green 15 times consecutively. I used the same eneloop batteries as you did and they come charged. To sum it up, is there some sort of reset I need to do, or must I put it on the charger for 24 hours even with charged batteries? You would think it would just work off the bat. I also have not put the back on yet, but don’t see why that would matter. Any help would be much appreciated!

I have a different problem with my Clarisonic Mia. One of the magnets on the vibrating (moving) part got loose and stuck in the gap between the static and moving part of the vibration system. It was easy to get the magnet out and glued back in its spot with super glue. The batteries are still OK and Mia is operational again. But I started to get intrigued if the magnet polarization was of any importance for the vibration amplitude. I tested and found that I glued the loose magnet in the opposite way of the magnet from the original assembly. Does anyone know what the original factory mounting of the magnets is? Or does some one know the science/math behind the magnet system and can give advice? Or could some one test an open Mia with a small magnet to check what the original position of the 2 magnets is: same or opposite polarization? Thanks

Great video, I'm going through these steps now and yeah I went with the manual opening method and it did take me about 20 minutes and lots of elbow grease :-) When it comes to the battery pack you remove, I noticed you wrote positive and negative signs on both of them... since they only have a single positive sign on the one battery, how did you know that the battery next to it was actually opposite (negative at the top, positive at the bottom)?

I did the hot glue thing at the end and it was a mess. It was too thick even wet to get the thing to snap together again. I just used the tape you suggested...I feel like I just conquered the world. The total I spent was about $30 on the supplies you link to on Amazon (silicon tape, soldering gun & the batteries). Bite me Clarisonic. Don't bother to tell me you can't leave the thing in a drawer for 6 months or it'll go dead. I win.

K O, did you replace the battery because it wouldn't charge and there was no sign of life? When we had to reset the breaker my device wigged out. When it's plugged in it just makes a consistent vibrating pulse that never stops and the same happens when i push the on button. Would you think it was a bad battery at this point and that replacing it would solve my problem?
@sipeschia

Hi, what's the tool that you use to clamp the item? And also..can you explain a little bit about the battery part? You made some markings and somehow got the wire there. And the wire...did you just cut a piece from the headphone cord?
@kwok3d
@kwok3d 8 лет назад
hi, I used a C-clamp that I got from Harbor Freight. The markings on the batteries were to make the soldering wire easier to stick on the surface. I did use a small wire from a broken pair of headphone, I saved different sizes of wire/cords for repair purposes, you shouldn't have to buy them.
@msintrovert
@msintrovert 8 лет назад
Thank you for your reply. I have a few more questions after rewatching your video. Did you solder the wire on both top and bottom of the pair of batteries? At first it was just on the bottom (I think). Then after you placed the batteries into the machine, you did something to the top? And also, before you put the two halves of the machine back together, what was that bottle of white stuff? You put some white stuff here and there around the parts.
@kwok3d
@kwok3d 8 лет назад
+Jenn Hi Jenn, you only need to solder the wire at bottom of the batteries (make sure you connect + to -). At the top, you'll be soldering the batteries directly to the 2 metal tabs extended from the motherboard. The white stuff is acrylic caulking but please use 100% silicone caulking instead. You can also use glue gun but silicone is way easier to remove if you ever need to access it again. The best practice is to caulk the batteries, test your brush, drain the batteries, recharge making sure everything's working. Then seal the covers for good. Goodluck!

You will notice that the original battery, the connections are made using resistance spot welding. It is very dangerous to solder battery connections. The heat from the soldering can melt the internal separator of the battery and cause a fire.
@fat_pigeon
@fat_pigeon 2 года назад
+1. In this case they're NiMH so there's no great danger, but it can still degrade the batteries. Either use a spot welder, buy batteries with pre-welded tabs that you can safely solder onto, or get a 2x AA battery holder.
@wsvitak
@wsvitak 3 года назад
I went through all this trouble, ordered and waited for new batteries, soldered all new batteries back together and now it won’t charge. I really though it would work too. Crazy part is I checked the charge before removing old batteries and was getting a charge. Not with the new ones though.
@fat_pigeon

Soldering may have killed the batteries. Either use a spot welder, buy batteries with pre-welded tabs that you can safely solder onto, or get a 2x AA battery holder.

How did you get the battery off the battery connectors with the wire cutters? Were you breaking them off, or cutting them below the connection?
@kwok3d
@kwok3d 8 лет назад
+Sarah Kate Marsh When I repair the first unit, I cut it off with a wire cutter, a bit messy and slow. On the 2nd unit, I used the Dremel rotary tool with a thin cut off wheel. It took no time and did a clean cut. The key is to cut it as close as the battery, leaving yourself more metal on the Mia to work with when solding it to the new battery later on.

I'm girl. not very handy but willing to learn! ! :)
@kwok3d
@kwok3d 8 лет назад
+Stacey Bailey No problem, I will walk you thru. The easiest thing to do is find a friend who can do soldering to replace the battery for you, because if you haven't done soldering before, it may be a challenging. Now if you really want to get the tools, you may get a Precision Tip Soldering Iron, Solder Wire, cut off a piece of Lead Wire from un-use electronics, a small waterproof silicone, For sealing the outside crack, I recommend using hot glue gun with Precision Tip, then tape it with the silicone tape I used at the end of the video. All the tools and materials could run you $40-50 if you don't have them. Anyway, let me know if you have any question.

No, the gloves I used wasn't cut-proof. I made sure I position the blade direction away from cutting myself. I did slipped many times and it landed on my cutting mat. That's why I made the part3 video showing how to cut open the Mia with a Dremel tool. It only took me 5-7 mins.

+kathleenin kansas I used #409 (the 0.025 inches thick cut-off wheel). The spinning/heat will melt the edge as you cut the Mia. Make sure you align the wheel straight (challenging) and clean up nicely before assembling. That way, you can achieve better result when closing the gap.

First off, TOTALLY agree about the Eneloop batteries!! They.ROCK and hold a charge for an eternity. :) But I want to make sure I understand - they will charge through the plastic handle of the clarisonic? I have some Eneloops that charge in a charger where they make direct contact with the metal charger thingys (not sure what they're called!) But they will charge up through the plastic? If so, I may have to do this, as my old Clairsonic (not the Mia, the slightly bigger and older one) seems to not hold a charge for more than a week now... Thank you for this video - I'mma save it so I can go right to it when I need to refresh myself on how to do this!
@kwok3d
@kwok3d 7 лет назад
Hi there. Eneloop doesn't charge thru plastic but the Clarisonic has a wireless charger inside. The batteries used in the original unit is far worse than Eneloop and still worked. So no worries, unless if your built-in wireless charger broke. If the unit is failing, not charging... worth a shot. Nothing to lose, most people toss them away anyway.

My clarisonic worked very well for the first 2-3 years, after it stopped functioning, I would repair it, but it is not possible because there is no customer care! what should I do, should I throw it away? I do not think it is right, last week I took to repair a 30 $ blender, because I can not fix a device that costs 5 times as much and it works only 1 minute a day? I went to sephora, checked the box and the sheets inside, there is no written anywhere that, after the two years of warranty, you have to throw it in the rubbish! is a very, very incorrect behavior, not all people can afford to spend 150 $ (and more) every 2 years! for this reason I am trying to alert people who, before buying clarisonic, also consider this issue! please, share this, it is very important that all people who want to buy clarisonic know this problem too!
