I am happy to see you make this comparison video. As your final tally shows, the phrase "difference without a distinction" comes to mind. The base material, bezel font and crown placement are details where one might have a reasonable preference but the biggest differentiator is price vs value. Another interesting head to head might be between the Shogun and the -051 or -063. Similarly priced and engined the latter have sapphire and milled clasps that I find appealing but the average man on the street probably couldn't tell apart without a roadmap. I've been feeling an itch to acquire a blue faced TransOcean -047. However, I don't give my Kinetic SUN019 enough wrist time as is. Both have sapphire and milled clasps but the 2X price difference gives me pause, though there is quite a bit of aesthetic difference. Titanium is famous for being extremely harder than steel on the tooling to $hape it. Zippo made a solid titanium lighter more than a decade ago and I note never since. The Ebay prices for that model are crazily stratospheric. No one makes titanium pistols or other firearms that I am aware of where the weight reduction would be a huge selling point. Oddly, I perceive my titanium watches as feeling insubstantial although my head knows better. My wrist must need the workout. Heh.
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 6 лет назад
Thanks for that - some great points you make. My sense is indeed that it is the difficulty in working and fashioning titanium (and not the base cost of the metal) that makes it more costly. Well, if one of those 62Mas models comes across my hands I will aim to do a comparison!
@tamirobo

Got both. Both aren't step downs from a more premium model. The design of these watches can stand on their own. The review is on-the-spot on all aspects. I'm just concerned about the Titanium. It does scratch a lot easier though. I still have to find out how to restore the finish on my other titanium watch.
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 5 лет назад
Thanks for that - yeah I do have my worries about the titanium despite what Seiko claim about that Dia-Shield magic. Having said that though, this piece is holding up pretty darn well, so it looks like it's not just purely marketing...!

Thanks for that - yeah I figure it's not expensive, I think it's to do with how it's more difficult to work and fashion... but nonetheless I think the value takes a knock for that.

The Sumo with the rather larger bezel numbering kills it for me, i can't get past that as i see it as a somewhat childish looking. The Shogun does feel and look great after wearing it for about 7 months now. But the Sumo is obviously good value for money. The 053 really looks killer, i'm going to try one in Japan soon. Hopefully it won't wear to large. Keep up the good work.

I had already decided on the Shogun and had some on my eBay watch-list. I definitely prefer Titanium, and have several. However, the Sumo case seems so wearable, a work of art. So I just searched Seiko stores on Google maps. Gotta try them on in person. Low blow to take a point away from the Sumo you have for being blue, surely there's a black Sumo!?
@PerthWAtch

All the best - it is worth trying on in person. As for the point difference... I can't remember the details now but pretty sure a black one would still have gotten the same mark.

I think shogun would match for dress up watch, so in the name of subjectivity, i would give 9 for shogun design, 5 for sumo and i would do the same for their factor x. My final result would be 81 to 74 for shogun.
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 5 лет назад
Thank you for that... I think that's fair enough, as in the end there is subjectivity in these markings and no absolute right or wrong answers. It's the discussion I enjoy and it's good that this has generated plenty :)

Finishing issues do not have to be found "while using", you should notice them from the start (and in the video). The Shogun bezel on mine is a bit loose (like I said), the Sumo bezel is just nice.

Wish the Shogun was more reasonably priced. It would've been a no brainer for me since I prefer titanium to steel by a large margin. But double the price of the Sumo is a little too much.

I think it’s possibly a lower multiple these days, since the new “better” (more expensive) sumo models came out.

Wow awesome comparison on both of these amazing watches . I am bias like you owning the Blumo so I may have added points more to the Sumo. However I will say this the shogun is outstanding, just wish it was made in stainless steel. I think if Seiko had made a stainless steel version of the shogun as well as titanium I would of been all over it . Again own the Blumo and my favorite by far but a shogun in stainless steel would definitely be a winner for me 👍🏻
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 5 лет назад
Thanks for that Joseph - do you prefer steel because of the ease that Titanium scratches? The "Dia Shield" does a pretty good job of protecting I think... so far so good! :)

Perth WAtch no it’s actually the weight of titanium being to light in weight. I like the feel of stainless steel because I actually like the heft of a watch . I’ve tried on titanium watches before and it just doesn’t appeal to me.
@PerthWAtch

Sooo if you had chosen the black Sumo instead of the Blumo it would have tied or even won the comparison ? I've just never been drawn to the Shogun at all really. The Sumo (to me) is very unique and given the rather large price difference is just a better piece. My only issue with the Sumo is it's size is on the extreme limit of wearability for my wrist size.
@PerthWAtch

Great video. You are paying almost double for the Shogun, which has the same movement and the same crystal. Your paying a huge premium for the titanium. There are more affordable titanium watches, such as the Steinhart Ocean 500, which has a Sapphire crystal, a display caseback with sapphire, an ETA 2824-2, and 500m wr for $564 US.

I have both and the shogun has got more wrist time because it looks better and wears lighter. Sumo has that ugly big font on the bezel insert and I think the 20mm bracelet is too big for its huge case. My MM300 case is smaller than sumo case. I don't want to mod this sumo because I'm afraid it's going to decrease its value and I wan't a watch that looks good stock, so I'm probably going to sell it.

Danang Kurniawan They won't. Saphire is more scratch resistant but it's more likely to break then hardlex. If you go diving and scratch your watch nobody cares. But if the glass breaks your watch is fucked. ( I know that most people dont dive with these watches)

Perth WAtch sand jammed it up, very tinny sounding too, ive had over 15 JDM model seikos and been happy with quality control on all, but the shogun was my biggest disappointment accuracy, hardlex scratched so easy and bracelet wasn’t comfy but everyone has there likes and dislikes thats what makes watches interesting
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 6 лет назад
I think sand getting under a dive bezel can affect even the highest end of dive watches, but I guess you're saying that this is worse than expected. Curious to hear about the Hardlex being easy to scratch... do you mean this Hardlex was worse than those on other Seiko models?

The Sumo seems to be a bargain, but on looks alone, I love the Shogun, it’s proportions are lovely and I think I’d find the Sumo just too bulky and heavy. It seems a shame that Seiko have decided to build a watch with a case of 44mm and then put 20mm band on it, which is very rare for a Seiko diver. Change the cheap looking graphics on the bezel( and use tougher material, like sapphire/ pvd)make the lug width 22mm and use the hands off the monster/ Shogun, (not bothered with sapphire crystal) and you have unbeatable diver for little extra cost......I’d buy one of each colour!
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 6 лет назад
Thanks for a thoughtful comment - good points about the proportions, I fully agree that the Shogun is just such a well balanced watch, that's really part of what attracted me! Those potential changes to the Sumo I also think would improve it for me... but then, it wouldn't be a Sumo anymore :)

Hi, exat my problem now to decide me. Not quite the same, as sumo model comes the new green Hulk in the decision. In the ranking she would be superior to the shogun because of the new 6r35 movement and Saphire. Hm... These are two Seiko watches that didn't grow on me for the longest time. However, with time the Sumo started to grow on me in the last couple of months. And with the newest release of the Sumo Gen3 with the 6R35 at Baselworld I got interested again. In my search I stumbled upon the Jade or Emerald Sumo SZSC004. That thing just *POPS* - incredible presence! I got a good deal and that watch is on its way to me right now. The newest Gen3 with all the new bells and whistles doesn't interest me the slightest with the thinner bezel numerals... really boring watch. The green version SPB103 is especially boring with that "forest robin hood old man bavarian lederhosen green" lol. The SZSC004 is a totally different configuration of green and emerald that like I said pops like nothing elese I have seen for a long time. And the Shogun is still as boring as boring can be.

@@PerthWAtch If you do a little more research you will find that titanium does indeed scratch easier and show the scratches more due to its colour.
