In this classic motorcycle video log we catch up with Dave Mitchell (from Mitchell's Classics) and he updates us with the projects he's got on the go in the workshop. The highlight of the day today is the shakedown on the Norton Commando Dave has been working on.
At present Dave is working on Matchless, Norton Commando, Norton Model 99 Dominator and a Scott motorcycle and sidecar.

What a wonderfully relaxing channel fronted by somebody who clearly knows their stuff. Relaxed pace, clearly delivered and interesting subject matter. No annoying music, pointless flashy visual effects or filler content. This is super, please keep it up.

The Commando exhaust note took me back to 1980,when I had a Mk2A Interstate, in red. Mine, unfortunately, was thrashed and abused. A weak point was the gearbox layshaft bearing, which I abused and neglected, until it collapsed! Hindsight is tuppence a bucketful. I wish that I still had that bike now!

My late husband had one from new N reg from Peters in Hull, red with a ridiculously small tank . Was nothing but trouble from day one . Mainly due to a hairline crack in the automatic advance and retard he found out eventually. He reckoned the factory was on its last legs and using up parts that in their hay day would've been rejected. Wonder if it was the same one?

A chap I knew years ago had his mum buy him a brand new Commando 750 Roadster LYR 2K, with the new high compression Combat engine and Dunstall exhausts for his seventeenth birthday. He rode it back from Elite Motors in London and proudly parked it outside our local coffee bar, We all went to have a look at it and he tried to start it but couldn't, we pushed him to bump start it, still no go and with that he got mad and hammered the tank with hid fist, leaving a big dent, not a good start ! He used to rev it like he did his old Suzuki Invader and the plate glass windows used to shake as he roared past 😅 The engine lasted 1000 miles before the main bearing gave out and was rebuilt under warranty at our local Norton dealer, This happened five times until the dealer said that he was going to fit the new upgraded "Superblend" main bearings, I think they may have been from the U.S.A ? The dealer said to him, " There that should last now" ......... 1000miles later he returned with a rattling bottom end again and was promptly banned from the Norton dealers ! 🤣 I think the dealer received a pittance from Norton for warranty work, so I suppose you couldn't blame him, he was so busy with other work, he could earn a lot more money. I saw the chap some 20 years later and he told me he drove a Volvo Estate and had four kids ! How people change eh !

Love the videos Dave thanks very much. Kudos for talking about there being 'no shortcuts' when it comes to old (or any really) motorcycles. Sadly it's something we see too often, bad repairs or people wanting to own a vintage bike but not wanting to spend any money on them where it counts.

Roadster tank is 2.5gallons if it's steel, 2.25 if fiber glass, indicators were standard from 71, Definitely do the master cylinder upgrade if you want to ride a commando,

Another great video Dave, great to see you firing on all cylinders (video-wise) again ! - I do most of my own spannering but personally, if I need any specialist engineering work done I'd much rather cough up a bit more ONCE and get it done correctly than cough up a lot more a SECOND time to correct the poor quality work done the first time - Please keep 'em coming !..

Just found the second channel. Wonderful content, look forward to more. own, run and spanner Japanese bikes for 46 years now and can relate to a lot of the little details of the bikes you work on. I sincerely hope you are passing on this knowledge and working practices in the workshop as well as here on the channel. You are few and far between Dave. Thank you.

I totally agree with you when taking a engine apart, you've already invested a good sum of money in the rebuild so spending a little extra in new bearings which are cheap enough and new gears and chain can really be justified. So way on God's earth were the bearings just cleaned and the gears with timing chains not replaced? Maybe this is someone's bike and they opted not to spend dollar wise, but if this is your bike, why would you forego this change?

It’s from a Triumph. It’s a little longer than the stock item but I found that it’s just as hard to kick over.

What in the world could have caused the failure of that big end journal? Although looking at those massive conrods I am thinking this bike was worked for racing at some point?

Modern society is a "maintenance free" mentality. Throwing a 1000+ into repair/maintenance is scoffed at by most, for a bike. This is why its worth investing in. Ford Escort RWD was a common throw away car, look how rare an costly a well preserved example goes for now.

I had several 850s they earned first prize for being the worst cheapest bike I have ever owned.Electrcs were a joke.No oil trough for the cam and solid lifters so that wears out so fast it amazing.Then no bearing just a bush on transmission layshaft.Rubber Mounts that the motor a transmission lay in were junk by 2000 miles.Fasteners were like butter .Amal carburetors that the slides ate up the bore in 2500 miles . Plastic oil lines that failed at 6000.Bent valve from carbon deposits at 5000 miles.I bought a 1975 in 1979 with 1000 miles.It took two parts bikes to make it to 10,000.

You know how to cry the blues but worn out carbs at 2500 miles. Really? I have some with 40,000 and no problem. Something is wrong with mine because I haven't had any of these problems and I own several Commandos. Electrics, motors, gearboxes all great with regular maintenance. If you tried servicing them once in a while you would've had better experiences.
@redtobertshateshandles
@redtobertshateshandles 2 года назад
No. People don't want to spend the money. They want the mechanic to work for free. Or they think they know everything and attempt the work themselves. That Scott carb slide is super worn.
@robertshepherd3832

I have to say that Combat is no longer the bike it could be when it has that single Mikuni on it. The Combat with 10/1 compression, hotter cam and larger 32 mm dual carbs has lost all those advantages once the Mikuni got installed. Now it has slower acceleration, less torque and really sounds terrible. The supposed advantages don't seem impressive because it also idles terribly. Pity because the Combats really need dual carbs to run the way they should.
