I got my Rolling Block in 1960. I was 16 years old and found it in a neighbors garbage can. I got his permission to keep it. It had no stock or forearm and was also missing the front and rear sights. It was chambered to 7x57 Mauser but the bore was toast. A friend had gone off to a gun smith school in Colorado so it became his project. It came back as a 45-70. I acquired a semi-finished stock from Reinhart Fajen and completed the gun. I still shoot it today but out of respect for the age of the gun I keep my hand-loads at or below factory pressures. I have a 21 year old grandson and the rolling block is his go to gun when he wants to impress his friends. I really enjoy your videos.

A rifle would stick out of a trash can in an obvious manner, even without a stock. There is absolutely no reason to imply that someone is digging through someone else's garbage. In all likelyhood, the trash was out for pickup with the rolling block in full view. It's the obvious interpretation, personally, it seems to me you knew that.

There is something about the rolling block that really attracts me. Lots of history, simplicity and so forth. A gunsmith told me the only thing that you need to keep an eye on is the two large pins that the hammer and block pivot on. He said while it is rare, if a rolling block has been heavily used the pins can wear and get some slop. He told me that a good gunsmith can replace those with high quality modern standards new pins. But you are right to treat that old gun with respect and I think it was great that you took the time and brought new life to that good old rolling block. Rifles are more than just an object to spit out bullets, they have history and give us the chance use our ingenuity to keep an old rifle shooting well!

Beautiful old rifles! I guess I'm just a sucker for rifles and handguns from the old west, cowboy guns, I love all that stuff. Our modern firearms are amazing, but old rifles like this will always have a special place in my heart!

My first love, too; however, tens of thousands of new shooters out there mostly preoccupied with trying to figure out which of the newer guns they want. Eventually, they will develop an appreciation for the classics, too, though.

I built a rolling block with my grandson last year. I had purchased some luck of the draw barrels from a gun parts seller, 5 dollars a piece. Turned out to be a great buy for the package of 5, only one was a dud. The biggest surprise was a Remington barrel in 45 govt. Brand new in the white, no blemishes. I found a guy in Nevada who was a rolling block expert, he put a black powder era action together for me and shipped it with a couple other minor parts. I found a Remington Stock and fore end that would fit, and we got to work. After it was finished, we hand loaded some 45-70 black powder cartridges and headed to the range. It was mighty satisfying.

I'm watching this with my after work beer. I think that this is one of my favorite hickok45 presentations. I love the old rifles, the rolling block and the high wall have that look of an early classic rifle. I would love to see more of the American classic firearms. The single shot Sharps features in one of my FAVOURITE westerns, 'Valdez is Coming', starring Burt Lancaster. Like you, the word "romance" comes to mind when you think of that legendary rifle design (as it does when you hear 'Colt', 'Winchester', 'Remington' or 'Browning'). It's good to see them still being made and shot. Huge respect (as always) to your encyclopaedic firearms knowledge! It's like watching an engineering history channel. Wow, that Browning highwall is just beautiful.

Thy did the rolling block shotguns in 12 and 16 gauge. Very impressive rifle. The trapdoor was adopted because thy could convert original muskets to a trap doors which made them cheeper to manufacture.

Have owned a Remington Rolling Block in 7 x 57 Mauser chambering since about 1958, shot it thousands of times, harvested mule and whitetail deer with it with 175 gr. round nose bullets, a rifle and cartridge combination that never failed in hunting. Thanks for your report of some of the most popular old single shot rifles.

I have to say I have followed this channel for years and I love it, I am a weapons collector in the UK and it must be amazing to own as much and as many weapons as you please in most states. You don't know how lucky you are. In the UK we have to have good reason to own firearms and are heavily restricted

Some of the air rifle hunters in the UK, who happen to have channels on youtube, are incredible! Most are restricted to sub 12 ft. lbs., and the skill needed for properly dispatching small game is considerable. I live in the U.S., and have a fair collection of firearms. However, I usually hunt and target shoot with air rifles. They're quiet, accurate and efficient if used properly. Sub 12 ft. lbs. is not in my repertoire, however!

I recently bought a Pedersoli Sharps in 45-70, I've waited over 40 yrs to get one of these and am very happy with this rifle, it's unbelievably accurate and at quite a distance too, I really like your channel and the way you make your presentations !!

What a beautiful selection of single shot rifles. This was truly the golden age of gun smiths, and shooting. I've read where thousands of spectators would show up to watch competitors shoot 1000 yard matches even into the early 1900's. Imagine some of the beautifully crafted examples the top shooters must have possessed. After all, a top notch rifle had to look at least as good as it could shoot. I'm a 45-70cal. fan too. In the film "True Grit", Glen Campbell's character carried a Sharps rifle. I was 17, and it was the first time I really took notice of the Sharps rifle. That film lead me to the library where I read all I could on that iconic single shot rifle.

When I was younger I always dreamed of buying an AR15 on my 18th birthday but when I turned 18 I ended up buying a Thompson Center muzzleloader. When I'm out on my own one day I dream of owning a rifle like one of these. I guess as I get older I like class more than high capacity.

our pastor from our church found a vintage single shot that goes back to the great war for $50 from a yard sale. refurbished it slapped on a new coating of blue, beautiful rifle.

Chances are your pastor destroyed the value of the weapon. Refurbishing is almost never a good idea if the gun has collector value.

Great video!!! Love seeing those old classic firearms. Even by todays standards they are still some of the most accurate firearms. Quick question: Wasn't both the Trapdoor Springfield and the Sharps chambered for the .50-70 Government also? You don't hear much about that round, and was wondering. +lamonstra that's true... deaths due to gunshots are very rare in India. India is developing country and 60% people live rural areas. So if our govn. starts providing guns to everyone, our population will be almost half. Most people here are irresponsible and short tempered.

At $5 per round, it is pretty expensive to shoot and you can't find .577-450 at Walmart, if you can find it anywhere.

most people shooting Martini's even in 303 (black powder loads) hand load. Brass is a little expensive but if you keep the loads light you get heaps of use from them. Odd how in the US that a greater percentage of folk don't reload. I don't know any one who doesn't here in Aus.

I reload everything I can, from .223 to .458 in rifles and .32 S&W to .50AE in handguns, but it is very difficult to get anything but Berdan cases and I have my limitations. It is simply not worth the effort digging those things out, resizing the pocket and installing Boxers. Getting Boxer brass here is very, very expensive. I mostly keep my Martini Henry for show. It is crazy how slow the military was in adopting a multi-shot rifle. There was the 1860 Henry lever-action rifle, and some soldiers in the U.S. Civil War bought these rifles for themselves and used them in battle. There was the Spencer rifle and others used during this time also. Then there was the Winchester 1866. But the U.S. Army adopted a single-shot rifle as its standard rifle in 1873. This makes no sense to me. The British were also using the Martini Henry single-shot rifle in the 1870s, and it is partly why they lost large battles against the Zulu in Africa who were fighting with spears and shields. This just shows how slow armies are to adopt better technology. Single-shot rifles are wonderful in many hunting situations, but a multi-shot rifle is clearly better in combat.

It's like the equivalent of civilians having the M14 and the military still using the Garand, or the AR15 being the issued weapon while I could get an M16 off the rack from Cabela's. Could you imagine? It's interesting to think how this might affect the perception of the 2nd amendment. Many people these days make the argument that it was never meant to apply to military weapons (to include "military style weapons"), as such weapons are "too powerful" to be necessary for a civilian, but for a good amount of our country's history the civilian market had more advanced technology at their disposal than the government did!

I have one one of these with a 32 inch barrel. Simple scope. About 1/2 MOA at 100 yards off a bench rest. Very nice.

I guess it's a "hair trigger" like in good (European) hunting rifles; you pull the back trigger and reduce pull weight to a mechanical safe minimum, than pull the front trigger. At 4:58 Hickock says "I pull the set trigger", this type od trigger is also known as "Deutscher Stecher"

Great video! When I was a kid, another kid had a reduced size Rolling Block in .22 RF LR. I really liked that gun and wished I had one. Later on I managed to buy a Low Wall in .22 Hornet, and I really liked that gun. My current guns include a Ruger #3 in .45-70 and a H&R Handi Rifle with 5 different caliber barrels. Single shots are just something special.
