+hickok45 ...... Hickok45 is a good dad and takes care John of Hickok45andSon Channel fame. In an earlier, Hickok45 video, is a picture of a young John Hickok shooting, while sitting on the ground at the compound. .... Good dad, Hickok45 made sure his son had his pants legs, tucked into the top of the socks, to keep the ~biting, stinging, burrowing~ bugs out. .... The photograph caused a big brouhaha in the comment section. Quite a few viewers did not understand what is like living out in the country. .... I only bring it up, because in a Hickok45andSon video, John said, when he went away to college and played basketball, he did not connect socially with the other kids, at first. He was from the country, and they were from the city. [(I thought maybe John Hickok was still tucking his pants legs into his socks while he was attending college.)] ..... And yes, maybe John Hickok can use that idea in his comedy routine, at the comedy clubs. (The jokes do not have to be ~all belly laugh winners. Some of the jokes can just be throw away lines. Sort of like a number of Jeff Foxworthy jokes. As I remember some of the Hickok45 videos, Hickok45 enjoys Jeff Foxworthy jokes, and anything that was said by Meadowlark Lemon.)

I've been romantically attracted to external-hammer side-by-side coach guns for a long time. The idea of having very few moving parts, very easy access to effectively all of them, with the ability to make fairly easy repairs if you had to make it seem very attractive to me. Not to mention that it can do all sorts of custom loads (but always be safe with those), and they sell caliber converters for shotguns so you can shoot other ammo types that you have laying around. Some people have mentioned 'post apocalypse' scenarios for these firearms. I prefer to think of it as self-sufficiency and survival situations. Where if you had to pick up enough kit to get by for as long as you had to, I think the external-hammer coach guns offer a ton of versatility for use with limited resources available to you. Really awesome stuff. But the internal hammer ones are just as cool, considering how fast you can just load and unload. Wink. I really think that given enough practice, you could do well enough to keep up with a lot of remington / mossberg runs.

+FeedinAtroll But seriously... Will they both just fly perfectly straight? Will the shockwaves impact each other and the projectiles drift apart slightly? (this I would actually like to know) Will the mass of each slug have enough gravity to pull the other one in and they'll hit each other mid-flight? Will the gong get atomized and just vanish without a trace? Will the recoil break his collarbone and throw him back like 50ft, because that's how guns work? We need to know!!!

For home defense and hunting you definitely want a hammer 2 trigger type. Die to the fact that you can keep the gun loaded and uncocked and its fairly safe. As far as hunting maybe your set up for grouse and maybe you want to take a bobcat. You could use a barrel for a slug and a barrel for bird shot. For competition shooting it really doesnt matter much. Train with the one you pick and get good.

I've been watching your channel for a while now and your channel is probably the only gun channel on RU-vid where I appreciate the shooter taking his time to talk about the firearm and its history etc instead of just mindlessly unloading ammo into things. Great videos, always. The idea of having an exposed hammer gun never occurred to me until I got one. Firstly, they look way more intersting. Secondly, as you point out, you have more control over the operation. Thirdly, the ease of open or close motion will shock you the first time. You can see right away if the gun is hot. Did I mention they look better? Thanks sir.

+hickok45 The reason why german hunters dislike external hammers is you can, like a revolver, accidentally rub those hammers on your clothes/whereever and discharge it without pulling the trigger, even if you can halfcock those. pump-action-shotguns (germ. colloquial: "Wichsflinte"="Jerk-off-gun") are frowned here so the mayority of shotguns are doublebarreled ones(Also you just can load 2+1 because of the laws here). So what you end up with is that 70% of the shotguns here are double barreled over-under hammerless shotguns and selfdefense is no big deal here because you have to store your guns always in the weaponsafe so nobody stores his gun loaded/uncocked under the bed anyway(officially).

I wish you were my neighbor! I have watched many RU-vids but rarely watch them to completion. Yours are so informative and comfortable to watch I always watch them to the end.....then rerun parts. This video really addresses my questions regarding hammer vs hammerless coach shotguns, and yes I do use one for home defense. I have many other firearms for that purpose and they are 'arranged' around the house, but my go to is the Boxlock 12ga. coach gun. Although I don't think leaving the hammers cocked harms the springs, I don't like to do it. I leave mine closed, hammers uncocked by using snap-caps. I know, it's time consuming to break open, remove snap-caps, then load, but that has been my choice. With grandkids I do not want to leave a firearm in their reach loaded. Their lives are more valuable than mine. Thanks again for your great videos! Boxlock

You can actually decock a loaded doublebarrel with internal hammers! Open it, load it and then press both triggers while closing it slowly. With most shotguns the firingpins only come forward if the hammers inside are released with force by spring tension. So if you press the triggers before and while closing, there is no tension and they stay inside and don't hit the primers. Of course you should try that at a range first... Greetings from Austria (NOT Australia) :-)

Snap-caps are the only viable answer to ease springs on hammerless shotguns. This will prevent premature breakage of your firing pins. Saves you huge $$$$.

I believe you can leave an internal hammer shotgun uncocked by holding the triggers in as you close it. However, this leaves the firing pins exposed on the breechface and could possibly still set off the round when you shut the shotgun. And in order to cock it your going to have to open it again anyway, so you are probably better off with hammers.

My wife likes her Stoeger 410 coach gun, I like my stainless Stoeger coach gun in 12 and 20 and I have one in a blued steel version. They just feed into my love of westerns. I have an external hammer 20 that is just cool. I tend to keep them with an Allen buttstock holding extra shells so there is ammo ready on each one when I pick it up. It also helps keep the 20 and 12 shells apart.

@WiltshireMan
@WiltshireMan 8 лет назад
+Evan LaCross In some ways frustrating:) but it's still good to watch Hickok45 even though I may never fire a real hand gun. We are able to own rifles and shotguns and even sound moderators. The thought of using firearms for self defence is not entertained and infact it is made impossible as the guns have to be kept under lock and key or in another safe place.. The UK has by and large been a safe place to live uptil now! Lets hope that continues. The strict gun laws have done nothing to reduce gun crime. infact handguns although totally banned here are used in gun crimes. We can own pistols and you have to shoot them on a range. They have to have long barrels with stock extensions. In short, they are a joke:) You keep on shooting and I will keep on watching:) Sandy
@Rroff2
@Rroff2 8 лет назад
+Wiltshire Man Its kind of a joke that if you can prove reasonable justification you can actually own a wide range of firearms in the UK even straight pull 50 cal - sadly it is as effective as an outright ban as very few people would actually have reasonable cause.

My first waterfowl season after Vietnam in 1970 I needed a cheap shotgun fast. I bought a Rossi SxS but not a coach gun. For less than $70 with 28" barrels, 3 inch chambers and fixed M and Full barrels. One point you didn't touch on was I loved that for being safe in the duck blind. The birds start coming into the decoys you cock it, then you either fire or if you don't and you un cock it. Whereas a shotgun with a safety you could forget the safety is off, sitting in the blind or boat you were more aware of your exposed hammer condition. JMO When I made Sgt. and had to walk point it was with an Ithaca model 37, loved that one.
