Clean your phone charge port

Are you having problems charging your phone? Do you have to wiggle the cable or get it placed just right before it starts charging?
Instead of paying for an expensive "repair" or replacement, you might be able to fix it yourself at home by simply cleaning out the dust, dirt and lint that often get stuck in the charge port.
This is relevant for all phones, android, iPhone and even tablets like the iPad.
Although I personally prefer to use a needle, there's a risk that you'll short the pins inside the phone or cause damage with the sharp point. For that reason, it's recommended to use a thin piece of plastic instead.
You should cut the plastic to have a long point, similar to a needle and then you'll use this to dig out any dirt inside the charge port.

Holy crap. For years I've been putting my phone in weird angles and spots to get them to charge. I never thought it would be like a belly button, collecting lint. I cut a bread bag tag to a point and cleaned out enough lint to make a sweater. No more problems. Thanks dude.

I wonder how you get ports so dirty. No offense. I' using my S9 more than 2 years now, I maybe cleaned it 2 time for that time. Certainly I have not touched the USB-C port though. And I put phone in pockets and other normal places. I bough a cheap second hand S8+ for hobby projects. I was surprised NOT to see the metal parts inside its USB-C port. While I just checked mine and dirt is hardly noticeable.
@hsnafk

@@akostadinov it can happen particularly with new clothing as the friction from the phone case being in the pocket as well as other items left in the pocket can collect over time e.g lint, tissue, dust

@@hsnafk Agreed. Just used this Video to Clean my Dad's Phone. I bought him the same one as mine. Only Major difference is I, 95% of the time, put it inside a phone Holster. He on the other hand just Pockets it. It wasn't even all that bad, IMO, some noticable dust bunnies, grains of sand, and the smallest fleck of paper was all it took to keep the Cord from sitting firmly in the port. (If positioned correctly it'd "unofficially" slow charge (no charging battery logo, just a brief "Charging" message, then no further progress notice at all, if the cord didn't come loss or wasn't seated properly to start... Now it seats and Rapid Charge is back!)

Dude, Thank you so much. I have had to purchase multiple charging cables to solve this particular problem for a few months now. i Cut out the top of a plastic bag into what you suggested and carefully got all the dirt out. blew some wind on it, connected it to my charging cable. Boom. No more issues having to wiggle the cable anymore. I rely on my phone for my job/communication and you good sir have been such a help.

The plastic makeshift tool is a great solution, thank you. Compressed air alone simply doesn't have enough force to scrape out packed-in gunk, and metal tools are too harsh and possibly conductive. I used a bit cut from a coffee cup lid. It didn't completely fix the problem, but I'm sure I'll get a lot more life out of my phone. [edit] LIke you, I did follow up with a straight pin and it made a huge difference. That gunk really gets wedged in there, especially in the corners on each end, and physically blocks the connector from engaging. It's not a tiny bit of dust.

Thank you for your advice on cleaning the charging port. Using a small piece of plastic from an empty milk carton worked effectively. About 5-10 minutes of cleaning was required. I thought the charge port was defective and would have to be repaired - but cleaning resolved the problem. Thanks!

I tried so many other things, compressed air, a toothpick, even got a new charger, and none of it worked. I could still see the dirt and dust in there preventing it from charging. But after your video, I spent like 10 minutes with a cut piece of plastic and fished out two giant pieces of lint and for the first time in a long time, my phone started charging right away when I first plugged it in.

Huge shout out to you for helping me out! I dropped my phone at Kings Island, and it wouldn't charge anymore, so I thought I ended up breaking something internally. Time went on as I tried to charge my phone, and it refused to charge. It would constantly stay at 0% and would flash a red plug at me, turn green for a split second, charge for half a second, turn on the phone, shut-off and repeat. I've heard Google Pixel 2 XL's have had charging issues, and I've tried all of their troubleshooting guides, but nothing seemed to work. Then, I searched up my issues on RU-vid, found you, spent 20 minutes cleaning out my charger port (Even though the charger would go in securely) and it starts to charge flawlessly. I never knew something as easy as this would help, even though the issues I was having seemed to be more than just dirt and lint in my charger port. Anyways, I can't thank you enough!

jameshone1000 - Just get some electronic contact cleaner which will dissolve any crap in they're in contact. Then close your eyes and blow into the USB port to get any residual crap out, or blow it out with a can of air. If you have something stubborn that's really stuck in there then you can use this trick to get larger pieces out first before using the contact cleaner. Electronic terminals often collect dirt, dust and other matter on them and contact cleaner is designed to clean electronic terminals and boards without being electrically conductive and it's fast evaporating within seconds.

Since it would still Slow Charge overnight (if placed just right) figured it'd just have to do. Battery Life often lasts 1-2 days so a trickle charge is OK. Tonight it got left out in a freezing Cold Vehicle and the Battery went to Zero. "Charging" apparently wasn't working anymore... So time to clean it before I attempt to crack open the case. Wow! My s9 plus wasn't charging. I bought two new cords, switched out charging blocks, took it to T-Mobile, watched a dozen different videos, ran around the block yelling with my phone tapped to the side of my head... Nothing worked until I watched this video. Took me literally 15 seconds(counting time to cut plastic water bottle). I removed two tiny particles of dirt, with the little sword thing I cut out, and my phone charges like new now! Thank you for a great video!

Worked great, thanks! Pulled out a piece of lint and a small wood splinter. Charging cable snaps into place normally again!

Thank you! My fast charging on S8 has been broken for weeks, my charging port looked clear but this was my final option. Ended up getting a bunch of lint out and it finally works!

Hi... great tip. Thanks! Before I started w/ the little plastic tool I took the vacuum cleaner to the port to try sucking out the dirt first. Then I dabbed the tip of the plastic 'back scratcher' with Isopropyl alcohol. Working fine now.

Thanks for that simple idea dude! I actually used a toothpick and it worked just fine. I was ready to take my phone in and probably be charged for a new port when this is all it needed.

CLEAN! Bamboo toothpicks are good tools Paper Q-Tip sticks cut in half flattened to fit port. Clear Ammonia Denatured Alcohol Find a Snug fitting USB cord. Retired Camera Repairman here.. A needle like dental pick A similar dissecting tool For stubborn cases.. Luck! J.C.

To my surprise.. it did work for my iphone. I was skeptical to use the trick and was thinking to order a new charger instead as I have only one phone with me. Thank you so very much!

wow after having an error on my S8 saying that my charge port was wet for 3 months I clean some lint out of my phone and within 2 minutes it's gone away. I couldn't find anything small enough to have a proper root around, but the plastic trick worked great thanks!

Wow, it worked with my 4 days old pixel 2 xl. Purchased the phone, went on a road trip and it stopped charging while returning. Got home, saw your video and found a thread thing which might have entered from inside my pocket. Thanks a lot.

Hey this was actually exactly what I needed. I tried a vacuum and those cans of compressed air you use to clean keyboards, before coming to the conclusion my charging port was damaged. Nope! Just a chunk of lint! Came right out!

Thanks for the tips - It worked!. Tried a toothpick but it broke. Then turned phone completely off and used a needle. Not much lint come out, but it made all the difference.

Your video had a light bulb go off in my head. I got one of those GUM brush picks - yes, for your teeth - they're made of plastic and have those tiny brushes. I'd been having the same intermittent problems with my phone and thought I'd cleaned it out when I used a pin but it really didn't. The brush pick brought up a piece of really tiny debris (and I think dog hair) and sure enough, my original charger is working again. You definitely helped. Thank you.

Thank you! At first, I didn't think this was my problem. Then, I started scraping off the caked-in lint and it came out in dusty bunches. Very-much appreciated!

You sir, are wonderful. The lint in mine was jammed in pretty deep because of my attempts to plug the charger in, so I needed a tougher bit of plastic, but I was encouraged by your video to find the right non-metal tool and with a bit of patience was able to get it all out!!!! Thank you!!!!
