Robert Lustig, MD. Food, Metabolism, and Psychiatric Disease
Dr. Robert Lustig is a pediatric endocrinologist known for his research on the effects of sugar consumption on health, particularly the relationship between sugar and central nervous system diseases. His thesis suggests that excessive sugar intake, especially fructose, can have adverse effects on the central nervous system. Lustig argues that high sugar consumption can lead to insulin resistance and chronic metabolic diseases, potentially impacting brain function. His presentations and research often focus on the harmful effects of sugar, particularly fructose, on various aspects of health. It's important to note that while there is ongoing debate on this topic, Lustig's work has contributed to discussions on the potential health risks associated with excessive sugar consumption.

4 months ago I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. My HbA1c (blood glucose) was 73 mmol/mol. Since then I have moved to a mainly wholefoods diet with little processed food and no UPF. I eat many organic things where possible. I eat strictly pumpernickel for bread, no refined carbs, no potatoes, ZERO added sugar and control carb portions to around 50g per meal. I enjoy cheese, fatty natural yoghurt, whole milk and snack on nuts, which keeps my fat intake at a good level. Kimchi, sauerkraut and yoghurt help my microbiome. I have also done a morning workout (exercise bike and weights) 4-5 times a week and have taken 500mg of Metformin twice a day. In 4 months I have lost 17.5Kg/2St 10lbs/38.5lbs and my blood test results today show a HbA1c of 36mmol/mol, which is amazing!

Goes to show that you can be a good researcher in your narrow area and then completely fail to understand everything else when it's just one step outside. The only real discussion is what is garbage and what is not (food, diets, behavior, etc...), and Dr. Lustig excels at tying it all together and the picture begins to become more clear for the clinical community, and more slowly, the general public.

A study with a ketogenic diet or sugar free diet in people with Alzheimer's would be easy to do and would rapidly show results and would be of great value to society.
@patriciaalford1470
@patriciaalford1470 4 месяца назад
Dr. Dale Bredesen, neurologist and Alzheimer's researcher, has developed the RECODE protocol, a multifactorial, precision medicine treatment protocol for Alzheimer's Disease, which includes a ketogenic diet. He has published the (largely successful) results in case series (10 pts, then 100 pts.) and a small clinical trial. His popular books include "The End of Alzheimer's", "The End of Alzheimer's Program", and "The First Survivors of Alzheimer's". Before Dr. Bredesen's publications, Dr. Mary Newport published her observations of improvement in her AD-afflicted husband's cognition when she administered exogenous ketones (coconut oil, which contains MCT oils, then MCT oils), then used a ketogenic diet. Deficits in brain energetics are a key pathology in AD, but are only one piece of the puzzle. Dr. Bredesen has identified multiple types and subtypes of AD and multiple underlying factors that must be addressed to not only halt the progression of cognitive decline, but to reverse it. Inflammatory (infections, metabolic, air pollution, chronic stress, defects in blood-brain barrier, etc.), lack of trophic factors (nutritional deficiencies, poor gut health, hormonal deficits, lack of exercise), toxins (mold, heavy metals), etc. Most AD patients have multiple causative factors to be addressed in addition to their diet, but almost all will benefit from a ketogenic diet and/or administration of exogenous ketones.

34:45 ...a compound that is made from an intermediary metabolite of fructose called methylglyoxal. It is the breakdown product of dihydroxy acetone phosphate. Okay, it can fit in that active site and it is an aldehyde. And what happens when an aldehyde and an amino group find each other? Right. So, here's the Maillard reaction. If the rate of the glucose at the Maillard reaction is one, fructose is at seven, methylglyoxal methylglyoxal is at 250. So methylglyoxal methylglyoxal is a bad guy, okay? Because it is binding to proteins whether you like it or not, okay? and it fits in the active site, so it fits in that AR you know, finds one of those arginines in that active site. So, the methylglyoxal gets made from dihydroxy aone phosphate from fructose fits inside there and then you turn off your AMP kinase irreversibly! You have basically killed your AMP kinase. So, your AMP kinase goes down; what does that mean for mitochondrial biogenesis? It means it's in the sewer; it means you have decreased your mitochondrial function. and if you decrease your mitochondrial function, what does that mean for your cell? It means your cells are starving. And is that going to have any behavioral effects if it's in your brain? You bet it will!

I got a second chance to life much thanks to Lustig and like-a-likes. Still time has shifted my focus less towards a diet. I have been low carb, keto and carnivore more than ten years. Now living no plants lifestyle with flawles un-illness. This is not the big picture. Not even close. Melanin explains everything Robert says. Why do not people see it is my conundrum. My focus has shifted towards POMC, leptin-melano cortin pathway in bioquantum frame work. I have a solid state optoelectric research background in semiconductor research. QuantumHealth seems to be underlying the chemistry and biology found to manifest these problems in the foods we consume. I claim that in real life we consume the light from the skies and transform it to energy by mitochondria and food exacerbates the machinery to enable all this. It is a story of light at first principles. It is the Light I see under the topis what Robert talks about. Blue light toxisity messing with circadian signaling, resulting in mitochondrial dysfunction. Some issues with pestisides and plants own phytochemical warfare in foods interest too. Not to forget the deuterium factors in this wide-band semiconduction hypothesis. Food is only a barcod of the native EMF we get from our star during any day and night plus the UV-frequency emission every cell makes with melanin when the sun is not shining. That is the bactreria and eucariot connection. Signals that are coherent. Where do you live? Do you eat food of that latitude?

I have huge respect for Dr Lustig but I was surprised that he advocates keto. He says he does it because the jury is still out on whether it's the keto or the elimination of sugar that has the positive effects. But I read the Yudkin 1974 book Pure, White, and Deadly that Dr Lustig recommended elsewhere (and wrote the introduction to) and it talks A LOT about studies comparing sugar based diet to starch based one. It seems to have already answered the question whether it's the keto or the elimination of sugar, way back by 1974. It also talks a lot about the importance of using animal models that are omnivores like us, otherwise you don't know if the negative effects is simply because you're just feeding the animals stuff they don't eat in the first place. I don't know if fruit flies' natural diet is sufficiently close to the human one, but rats are, and they're mammals too, so this gives the opportunity to study for example pregnant rats and the effects on their babies, which Yudkin also talks about. Keto is also known to be contraindicative for females (at least in fertile age, because it disrupts hormones) and absolutely so in pregnancy, so I was surprised that Dr. Lustig didn't mention sex differences throughout the whole talk, especially given that 2/3 of AD patients are female. Just think about it, the diet that best promotes baby's health and development in the womb is most likely the best diet period, and conversely, if it is contraindicated, this should give anyone pause. Dr Lustig also mentions the negative effects of meat but not that it is nutritionally challenging to be on a keto diet and vegetarian (unless you eat copious amounts of full fat cheese etc, the health benefit of which is dubious) and virtually impossible to be keto vegan, because pulses like lentils, beans, chickpeas don't pass the keto threshold, restricting the only source of protein to nuts and seeds. As another doctor mentioned, every known culture on the planet historically has eaten starch. The problems observed today correlate with the advent of sugar in human diet, not starch. This is also proven in generational studies of migrants to the US and their children. So I'm not convinced that keto is the answer. No fad diet can beat good old plain real, whole food, in moderation, combined with physical activity.
@lymphomasurvive
@lymphomasurvive 4 месяца назад
You’re talking about large civilizations that needed cheap food, which is starch. People have thrived for millennia on no starch. The human body can live without carbohydrates but it cannot live, well or for long, without fat and protein. Many women are more fertile after starting keto diets and native women all over the world have breastfed without starch in the diet. You mention vegans but no human society has ever been vegan.

Kombucha does need sugar as an ingredient because it is a fermented drink, so the bacteria used to make it feed off the sugar in order to produce the drink, like the cultures in yogurt or bread, same principle. Check the ingredient list but then look at the sugar content per 100ml and it should be very low. If it's high, that's because the manufacturer has added extra sugar for sweetness.

What makes this here Lustig's possibly best fitting form of presentation to aim at deniers? It's to the lesser demanding of a certain level of understanding by being directed more broadly and general, while it's still including the "to be continued" (glucose versus fructose) that even if amazingly so is sought to be hanging very loosely in the ear. Not even health specialists are much involving it at all, not even while informing of the obesity risks that's concentrated around the will or the lack of will that's no doubt wrongly and irresponsibly focused in directly harming manners, let alone the fructose's work on dopamine that'll soon get one kinds of very little amusing attention where "sweet is our culture" seems still to be representing a wall that's making for incredibly much of an impenetrable landscape.

25:22 Glucose actually stimulates mitochondrial function. So, you'll notice beta oxidation up arrow in green, hooray! that's good. Glucose increases mitochondrial function. How does it do it? It activates two enzymes right here. IT ACTIVATED AMP KINASE, adenosine monophosphate kinase; this is the fuel gauge on the liver cell. When your cell uses up ATP, it makes AMP, right: Because the phosphate bonds get broken and that's where the energy is; it's in those phosphate bonds, that's what the electron transfer support chain in your mitochondria do. It's they basically release the uh uh energy and you turn into NADH and then go back and forth, Etc. You know, that's that the whole oxidative phosphorylation that powers cells. everybody familiar with the concept? Right? Okay well, AMP kinase. Okay if you have more AMP, it fits into the active site and what that does is that tells the cell "not enough energy, we're energy depleted because I've got AMP instead of ATP. And so, we need to make more mitochondria." So, it increases mitochondrial biogenesis, which is good for burning more energy. In addition, it increases this enzyme here called HHDH hydroxy acetyl COA dehydrogenase, which is also involved in increasing the rate at which two carbon fragments get converted into energy. Thus beta oxidation go going up. So, glucose for lack of a better word is good . Fructose on the other hand is another story. Fructose does the opposite; fructose inhibits three enzymes that are necessary for normal mitochondrial function. [It inhibits AMP kinase, it inhibits ACADL, and it inhibits CPT 1A.]

In the last week I watched a youtube video on xylitol & dental health, so I started chewing xylitol gum a few days ago. @@mbea1367your teeth won't look better but they will feel smoother to the tongue. That means that the harmful bacteria can't stick to the tooth surface. Gut wise... most people experience some gas in the beginning. It's worth creating a habit of xylitol for oral health.

One question for Robert - if Fructose is so deleterious to Human metabolic health why have we evolved such an enhanced _reward_ response to it ?
@CarnivoreDMD
@CarnivoreDMD 8 месяцев назад
In the natural environment, except for very limited equatorial environments, fructose (fruits-berries) are very limited & seasonal. The “fruits” which we buy today ARE NOT the original smaller & more fibrous fruits found in nature. The fiber binds the fructose & gets it lower into the GI system where it is absorbed slower. Our desire to gorge fructose is a survival instinct just like in animals preparing to hibernate. Unfortunately, we now get fructose exposure 365 days/yr which results in chronic metabolic dz.
