I like that Dr. Grande asked the client what her strengths were, instead of saying that she was intelligent, he had to ask her if she thought she would consider herself to be intelligent. I think that provided her an opportunity to take a step back and realize her intelligence and potential in the future.

I appreciated how he asked if the topic was okay with the client to talk about. I liked how the Dr. Grande advised the client to still talk about the potential emotional abuse especially since the client hesitated prior to answering and wasn’t sure if it counted. I liked how he reflected back her feelings and validated her feelings while still asking the other questions. I thought it was interesting how he brought up her anxiety and drinking possibly increasing when her father is emotionally abusing her. I appreciated how he asked if the client considered this significant and would be okay with discussing it later. The way of being while administering is helpful to watch.

I like that Dr. Grande asked the client what it felt like when her dad made comments such as "I wish we had two of your sister" and he also reflected on her feeling and agreed to venture more into that later

I think it was helpful that Dr. Grande allowed the client to list both general goals for her life and specific goals she wants to work on in counseling.

I really like the way that Dr. Grande ends the intake. He is very understanding and reassures that she can ask questions at any time. He also lets her know what to expect in future sessions and that there will not be so many questions. I would have felt comfortable as the client here.

I like that he mentioned that they could revisit and add to her intake interview as she remembers things. I think clients would like that as well, particularly if they thought the assessment did not capture all of their issues, personality, or self as a whole.

good video, easy to follow, I like how the counselor is understanding of how the assessment process can be overwhelming and he checks in with the client to see how they are doing so they are comfortable and honest with him. I also like how they discuss her goals and what she wants to accomplish in counseling.

I appreciate that as well; that he checks in on her and when she gets uncomfortable, he tells her that's something they can talk about later. He doesn't force her to talk about it then and there. The goals are also something I found interesting as well. It allows her to put things into perspective and think about what she wants for herself.

Even I find the assessment process overwhelming and I will be on he other side of this. It is important to remember how that must feel to the client.

Yes I agree Rosa. He had already told her during the assignment that she would not have to discuss any topic she was not ready to discuss and he followed through with that. This is good to keep in mind, as it will aid in building trust with the client.

The client was asked what she thinks has protected her from having any suicidal thoughts after she said it was not an issue for her. Is this a frequently used follow-up question during this part of the session?

Subtle questioning about emotional abuse in what the client's reactions are to her experience with father....and how that plays into subsequent behavior.

Good point. He did a nice job of teasing out how her father's comments and attitudes actually did affect her.

I wonder how someone can have a boring life and never think of taking their life? how is it possible?
