Cobalt / G5 Intermediate Steering Shaft

My daughter was complaining of a popping / knocking sound coming from the steering system. A quick inspection revealed the tell tale rusty dust around the steering shaft u-joint in the engine compartment. Thought I'd put a vid together documenting the replacement. The second clip is blurry because I accidentally pressed a button on my camera reducing the quality.....sorry.
No music/radio/swearing or jiggling cameras (well just a little)

Great well explained video, I am faced with the same repair. I am 62 years old. In my entire lifetime after 10 years old, lol.. I have never heard of this repair. My dad was a lifetime car, truck mechanic for UPS.. we worked on used cars on his off time and never did this. Wheel bearings, Carb. Work, brakes, transmission adjustments, shocks, never a steering shaft repair. Here, I am faced with 80.00markup of the replacement part. You give people such as I absolute hope, and confidence to tackle this repair ourselves, not pay the 80.00 mark up or the 105.00 labor charge. I recently change an alternator... 2006 Saturn Ion, was it fun..?? .. no. Lol... again, shop wanted over 300 bucks... I said screw this, I will change it myself. Thanks again for posting this video. My car has 245,000 miles, I am not upset that I must change this intermediate shaft, however, lol, it will outlast the car now.

I just replaced this shaft in my 2010 cobalt. A couple of things to note to a great video.... First of all, removal of the shaft may not be as simple as sstocker31 had found. Yes, removal of the bolts is pretty straight forward, but my intermediate shaft was seized from telescoping. So simply sliding off the yoke at the steering column was not possible. I ended up cutting off the shaft and removing it in 2 pieces. Since it's not easily accessed at any point inside or under the vehicle, I chose to drill a hole laterally through the shaft inside the vehicle. A 1/2" drilled hole across and a couple of more holes drilled through at 90 degrees to that allows you to break the shaft apart and remove the yoke without any issue. Secondly, I live in an area where salt is used on the roads, so about 2 weeks before I began the repair I started dousing the lower yoke with penetrating oil, every 2 or 3 days. Made removing the lower yoke very easy. Rust can be a killer if the yoke is seized on. Unfortunately, the repair did not fix my problem and I still have clicking while doing slow speed turns. Oh well, 1 more thing ruled out.
@Jstro14
@Jstro14 6 лет назад
Awesome info. I'm going to be tackling this soon either tonight or tomorrow. BTW if your vehicle makes clicking when you turn only I'd get under which ever side on the front as these front wheel drive cars have a cv shaft into each knuckle that has splines on the ends one side goes into the hub and the other goes to the inner shaft. Search RU-vid on how to replace cv shaft see if that's your next issue
@georgelegge3393
@georgelegge3393 6 лет назад
@@Jstro14 Thanks for the tip but the clicking noise turned out to be the struts. As the wheel was turned the springs in the strut would pop. First the left, then the right. The strut mounts were bad. I replaced both struts and now all is good! Easy to check this if you watch the strut as someone else turns the steering wheel.
@skippy23418
@skippy23418 6 лет назад
Just so people know, if someone looks at the strut while the wheel is turned you can see the strut popping sideways which is causing the same noise I bet we both heard, a loud hollow pop that seemingly resonates through the whole engine compartment and is difficult to localize. Struts indeed was the problem. I wonder if the intermediate steering shaft had anything to do with the problem we both faced.

Had similar issue with my 2008 cobalt. 2 mechanic shops couldn't diagnose the problem and didnt want to mess with it cause it's an electronic system.. Advised to Goto the stealership which charged me 370.00 total parts and labor.. little costly but glad it wasn't an electronic problem.. could have been worse ..

Just a thought, if you need more room to work you can also remove the driver's seat. Only two bolts at the back of the seat and front legs of the seat slides into the frame on the floor. Going to replace my steering shaft, not only clunking, the steering is getting tight!

Someone already commented this but I had trouble getting the U-joints off the shafts. The intermediate shaft has a telescoping rod in the middle, you can test it out if you already bought the new shaft. My old one turned out to be seized, so no matter what I did I couldn't collapse the shaft enough to remove the U-Joints. I ended up taking a cutting wheel to the part that was inside the cabin and then it came apart easy. Made a hell of a mess and you have to watch out for the wires but it worked. Just wanted to let y'all know, I wasted too much time trying to bang on it.

I purchased a"new" one from advance auto, when it showed up on UPS I opened the box to find one that looked like it had been on a vehicle already...anyway the ujoints were solid so I just went with it. I had to get new bolts, the factory came with 8 mm by 45 long. the replacement part required 10 mm diameter which meant I had to go to a socket cap screw as the hex hd leaves no room for the socket...what a frickin dam mess.

Not sure if you will see this comment or not, but I was wondering when the popping and knocking sound occurs? I have noticed for awhile now that once I get over 100kms to 120kms highway driving the steering wheel starts to shake back and forth a tad and a popping/knocking noise happens while it is shaky. Just wondering if this is when your daughters was happening. I was told by a shop not to replace it because every time they fix one it comes back recently after the repair. Just wondering if this fixed her issue, since it has been a year, did the issue happen again? Sorry for the questions but I have put a lot of money into the front end of my (yellow) cobalt, and its getting expensive on a low income. Thanks for the video though!
@sstocker31
@sstocker31 8 лет назад
+canadian_girl27 The popping sound happened mostly at slow speed when she was parking. This did fix her issue and has be working fine, no problems at all. Your shop is full of BS....time to find a new shop. You can look at yours yourself, and if you see the telltale rusty looking dust, it likely needs to be changed. The shaking of your steering wheel at speed is caused by out of balance tires, or worn front tires that need to be replaced. Walmart is an inexpensive place to get balancing done. Lots of good mechanics work out of their home (as I do.) Look on kijiji for one, and ask if he has done this before on this model of car, and what his warranty policy is. Usually you can get this work done for half the going rate.

I also had issues getting the shaft to collapse. I eventually removed the two bolts holding the steering rack assembly to the frame. Then slide the rack assembly toward the engine and the passenger side of the car. This gave me enough clearance to get the shaft off the spline spindle on the steering wheel side of the intermediate shaft.

I replaced the intermediate steering shaft with using this method, using a long bar and tapping it upwards with the hammer, I used a mini sledge hammer and a crowbar. As for the rack and pinion assembly, I changed that too, took out the 2 of the long 18mm bolts that holds down the rack and pinion to the sub frame, after taking the wheels off, and putting it on axle stands, also took off the rear middle motor mount, and then angled and pulled it out from the driver's side wheel well. I removed the passenger side rack and pinion bolt from the top, with very long ratchet extension bar with 18mm flex socket and ratchet wrench, also used 18mm combination wrench as well, also cleaned the rust off the bolts with steel brush, and put anti-seize on it, and it's all done. Lots of PB blaster or Liquid Wrench penetrating fluid, and soaking time helps alot. Also tapping the new intermediate steering shaft from the top, and checking it, repeat it until the bolt goes through the side, do it tap it down little bit at a time.

I rebuilt my intermediate steering shaft with the u joint from a junk yard steering shaft, that I removed from a Cadillac. After I got home I pressed out the good and like new, steering u joint from the junk yard steering shaft, that was on the interior end of the steering shaft, then pressed out my old rusty u joint, and put in the replacement u joint and it works as good as new, cleaned it and applied lots of grease on it too. My Cobalt has a Cadillac steering u joint pressed in to it.

@theroyalcrownedtiger2946
@theroyalcrownedtiger2946 2 года назад
Putting rubber boots over metal parts has been done for a very very long time, such as strut boots, inner tie rods, cv shafts, and so on. I am surprised it took slow minded toyota this long to start putting boot over intermediate steering shaft. I already put did this 5 years ago, probably before toyota even did it, putting a boot over the intermediate steering shaft, it's been cleaned and covered with lots of grease to prevent rusting and to provide plenty of lubrication. Looks like I was ahead of toyota on this one, putting a boot over the intermediate steering shaft, and covering the shaft with lots of grease too.

Hopefully you'll see this. I'm in the middle of doing this job and I'm having an issue where I can't remove the shaft. The bolts are out but it appears the telescoping mechanism is jammed and I cannot remove the U-joint from the steering wheel side. Did you run into this problem at all and if so, any idea how to unjam it?
@sstocker31
@sstocker31 7 лет назад
No I never had that problem, but I suggest to use a flatblade screwdriver and push it into the split where the bolt goes through and try to relieve the clamping pressure on the joint. There is a point in the video where I used a chisel on the lower joint to do the same thing. lots of lube is your friend as well.....good luck
@theSoster
@theSoster 7 лет назад
I ended up hammering the lower joint off (as you do in the video). It took a very long time but it eventually came off. Top part slipped out easily after that. Once I took the link out, it was clear the sliding mechanism was completely seized up. I pounded on it to try to get it to move, but its stuck fully open. Anyway, thanks a ton for the video. It should be a easy fix. drive the car into the garage or spot where it's going to be worked on, and ensure the car is driving straight ahead when you stop. Doing this lets you know the wheels and the steering gear are centered. Mark the lower end of the shaft and now you know half of it is right. When you replace the shaft with the new one, adjust the steering wheel so it's straight before slipping the two splined shafts together. That should fix it up for you....best of luck!

@@johnnyversaci7091 : Sounds like all them cars have been abused, and not taken care of. I have alot of GM vehicles, and I look after them well, and they have been good to me, even today. Were any of those vehicles pre-owned when they were purchased ? If any of them were pre-owned, it's likely the car's previous owners abused it, before selling it off, therefore needing repairs happened and so on.

@@theroyalcrownedtiger2946 "brand new Yukon driven like a grandma, nickel and dime-ing after 5 years from brand new" "brand new Chevy Trax blown turbo after 2-3 years" which was driven by mom and school teacher. Besides the only used one I know for a fact was beaten on was the 05 Malibu Maxx which was actually the only one that didn't have a bunch of problems🤷 when that many cars brake lines fail after 10 years it's a perfect example of manufacturer building crap that will fail right outside warranty and a big safety issue no less
