This is the first CB radio I have repaired on RU-vid and has to be one of the worst condition radios I have ever attempted to sort out but I do love a challenge. In this video I manage to replace damaged trimmer potentiometers and realign the rig with test equipment. This will be the last of this series of videos. Please leave comment and suggestions as we’d love to hear from you.

Hi Chris, Yes it was a tough one and finally we got there. I have plenty of gear in for repair so I'll be hopfully making more videos. LOL Marconi cameo appearance, it's not mine as it's also in for repair. I do like the 2955's.

Well done mate. U did get that spot on they do sound really nice on receive. Looking forward to the next one John.

Thanks Gary. Yeah it's an interesting rig only real issue is that the TX and RX frequencies get out of sync in FM when using the clarifier. I think it’s to do with the 10.240 PLL clock getting pulled by the clarifier as it’s only FM uses the clock for receive. Design issue, not sure if Cobra sorted it out in later models.

@M0XFXUK no they havent yet mate. I read somewhere that it shows its head only after the 11 meter mod is done.

Hi Ray thanks for the comment. It may want T710 replacing as it looks like it’s been really baked by a soldering iron. That being said it's seems to be working but I wouldn’t trust it long term. They are pain to get out as the pins are so loose in the former and pull out when you try to de solder them.

@@M0XFXUK Hi John yea the coils are a nightmare to get out in all the new SMD radios the pads come away far to easy.

Hi, love your videos, thanks for taking the time to produce them. One thing I noticed the instructions stated the S9 meter calibration was to be adjusted and set using Freq. 29.500MHz not 28.000MHz. Not sure if it would make a difference, I was just wondering if that's why it was so far out of adjustment. Thanks.
@M0XFXUK
@M0XFXUK Год назад
Hi Kevin, Thank you for the comment. To be honest I don't think it would make much of a difference. For me it would make sense to set the S meter to the centre of the receivers tuning range which is in this case is 28MHz. Regarding it being really out, I had replaced the signal strength meter trim pot for a new one which I didn't show in the video as it was getting too long. In fact I replaced all the resistor trim pots as they were all in pretty bad shape. Another thing is that I set S9 to 50uV -73dBm which I have been told it should be 100uV for CB radios but that being said 50uV is correct for the 10 meter band so I guess it's what you want to use the radio for. I'm glad you like the videos. Best regards John.

More patience than i have, i would have put the hammer through it by now. now if it was a decent radio i'd spend the time, but knowing how these radios are it would probably be easier to rip the insides out, fit a decent board in there and a linear and build a better radio from the cabinet :)

I have a 200 gtl dx and a 150 gtl dx what would I have to do to use it on 11 meters?? Thanks and any help would be appreciated..
@M0XFXUK
@M0XFXUK Год назад
Hello Charles, There is a simple mod you can carry to make these work on the 11 meter band and cover the FCC / EU CB channels. I have never done this myself but it looks straight forward enough here is a link. Note: You will need to be able to solder / de solder to a reasonably high standard as this involves surface mount components. If you are not experienced then take the radio to someone who is as it's really easy to cause damage to the unit. swap.qth.com/fcc/cobra-gtl-mod.pdf

@M0XFXUK I have a cobra 200 gtl dx the same as you have done there are a lot of common faults with it slightly out of tune squelch problem and volume needle is not on point and probably the same issue you had with the one you did
