Lyrics ~ Beggar's description Of what I've been missing Exploit your position Don't think I didn't listen Hey I hope you're feeling A little better now Success is so tragic Pain is your gadget Your tongue's just lashing Just bitching by habit Hey I hope you're feeling A little purer now Hey I hope you're feeling Securer now Help me I plea I don't understand Your ways and your means You smashing young man Help me to see The good you have planned You're wearing me thin You smashing young man You preach synthetic-like Peace is an oversight It's nothing to ignite Your self-lit spotlight Hey I hope you're feeling A little special now Hey I want to tell you I think you're special now Help me I plea I don't understand Your ways and your means You smashing young man Help me to see The good you have planned You're wearing me thin You smashing young man I don't recall asking for guidance I don't recall wanting to I don't recall bowing before you But I'm so impressed With the kindness in your attitude Help me I plea I don't understand Your ways and your means You smashing young man Help me to see The good you have planned You're wearing me thin You smashing young man... repeat.
Collective Soul is one of the greatest bands in history, so original and fresh every album, so many memories from almost every song they came out with...
So did me and my best friend. Any beach trip or something, we’d have Collective Soul blaring. I went and saw them in the mid 90”s at a bar down in South Carolina and I caught the lead singers guitar pic.
@@patt646 Yes, Collective Soul has had so many great songs going back all the way to 1993 !! One of the greatest bands of all time and I have had the chance to see a lot of their videos on You Tube. And Ed Roland is one of the greatest frontmen/lead singers of all time. They're excellent, and Collective Soul will be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame !! 🎸🎸🎸🎤🎤🎤🤘🤘🤘
I've heard soooo many songs I'd forgotten were theirs! 😅 I saw them with Gin Blossoms in 2019, & like almost every song, I was shocked that it was one of theirs!! I got heavily into alternative rock in the mid nineties, but did not always pay attention to who the artist for any particular song was, (or, the recollection has been lost to the sands of time. The 90s were a long time ago, a fact which makes me sad.) If I were granted use of a time machine, the nineties would be one of my first stops. ♥️🎸📺📼🖨️📟🖱️🎵🎵
Yeah the story goes that it’s not but Billy corgan was convinced that it was bc he talked smack about them. He kept making a big deal about it so after he had said no a thousand times before, he finally cracked once and said if he was Ts it to be about him then it’s about him. However, the song was never about Billy corgan.
I love you Billy!!! Thank you for being so ridiculous that this song was made, keep in mind I'm %100 a smashing pumpkins fan, I'm a secondary collective soul fan
I saw CS open for Aerosmith in '92 and saw them headline in '08 and all I can say is that Collective Soul are true musicians and dedicated to their craft. This song demonstrates their natural ability to achieve a catchy chorus that lures the listener into musical paradise.
Heck yeah! These guys are bad-ass! I've been a fan since "Shine" came out in '93 or '94. I mostly listen to death metal now, but I still love Collective Soul.
Que rico este tema... Collective Soul fue una banda que no tomé mucho en cuenta en los 90... Tuvieron que pasar varios años para reencantarme con su música... Gran disco el homónimo.
I can VIVIDLY remember during the summer of '96, I was 16 and just starting to get really serious about playing music. I had been playing guitar since I was 10 but the summer of '96 I started playing in a band that consisted of 19 and 21 year olds and the fact that these older, fantastic, no nonsense musicians deemed me good enough that they were willing to bring a KID into the fold, it really gave me confidence. I'd been playing with rag tag, mediocre 13, 14 and 15 year olds, now I was in a real working band. Anyway, I was brought in as lead guitarist while the lead singer also played guitar. The one thing they asked me to do was learn how to sing harmony. I had never done it, nor thought of doing it and had a difficult time at first. With a guitar, I could harmonize on the fly, no problem but for some reason singing it gave me trouble. I spent that whole summer busting my ass, learning how to sing harmony and the chorus to this very song is what I used to learn because there's alot going on vocally. I even took a cassette and recorded the chorus on a 10 minute loop....just 10 minutes of the chorus and IT WORKED. This song taught me vocal harmony, summer vacation....1996. Great memories!!!
I was 20 in 96' and some of my best memories was seeing my generation learning and playing music. Every weekend there was a show. Be it in your friends basement or at a bar that draws a crowd. Live music was everywhere and it was awesome to be apart of the 90's scene. Best memories of my life, period!
How KOOL of Collective Soul to write and make a video to let Billy know that he is a valuable albeit misunderstood young man.......and complimenting him on his efforts.....and that is "special" and he is appreciated within the industry, but definitely grasping....and best wishes to "FIT IN".....Turning the other cheek and looking for the "GOOD".
@@cheshire_skatkat9093 And then Smashing Pumpkins soon became bigger than Collective Soul ever dreamed of. That being said, Billy Corgan really needs to learn when to shut up.
@Sarah Crowley I can't believe that a comment from 8 years ago is complaining about missing the old Collective Soul. You've made me feel old. Yet, at the same time, I feel privileged to have stumbled across your comment.
I too miss the OLD Collective Soul, their 90's albums were amazing. Sadly they took a more 'Pop' direction around the early-mid 2000's, and haven't been the same since. Vocalist Ed Roland is the leader of the group - it's his band, so I blame him, as the newer albums, and their more commercial sound are obviously the sound that he wants.
They did a couple of good songs in the 90’s but they are so much better these days beginning with dosage they just got better so I’m glad they haven’t been the same since :)
If you were listening to this when it came out most people probably was listening to smashing pumpkins as well! With both of these bands i loved the first 2 albums they put out. They were the best. Back then id go from listening to Collective Soul to Smashing pumpkins to Nirvana to Metallica to AIC to Danzig etc etc. I loved all that stuff and still do. It was a great time to be alive!
I DON'T RECALL ASKING FOR GUIDENCE.....I DON'T RECALL WANTING TOO....I DON'T RECALL BOWING BEFORE YOU.....BUT I'M SO IMPRESSED WITH YOUR KINDNESS...DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO---AXMAN
@mrOrange1251 lol it is look! This song is about Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins. Billy tried to sue the band after "Shine" was a hit - he claimed they copied his song "Rhinosauris." However, "Shine" was featured on a Ed Roland demo back in 1987 long before Billy wrote his song. The case was thrown out. (thanks, Aaron - Chicago, IL)
@@SPACEB0YZER0 And neither song resemble Shine at all. That being said, yeah Billy Corgan may be an ass… a lot, but Smashing Pumpkins is a much better band overall. He just really needs to learn when to shut up.
ashlar236 Umm I hope you realize that this is a song saying to the people who are selfishly claiming to be so great need to humble themselves a bit. Note the words Help me to see the good you have done. Your wearing me thin. Bless your young boys and play them some motivational stuff. Collective Soul has many of them.
Bein im a Collective SouL fan from the beginning, and 2 this day see them live every chance I get(seriously the best Live band ever, 23times over 31yrs since my first time with them!) this song tho not played live in 4evah, has held on as one of my faves, I mean the whole “”Self titled Blue” album is incredible, but my all time faves change over time & come back again, but heck, that’s what a band that 2me stands the test of time does, or I shud say, has, in their catalog, so bein im long winded in all I speak of, I just hadta say in short, this traK in timelessly Awesome!♥️Ps-I used lived in SoCaL b4 movin 2 Mpls where I live now, but when they first hit, I was kikn in LA, hangin in Hollywood several nites a week, watchin all my diff buds bands jam on the strip out there, but I cudnt get any of em 2 give CSouL a chance, till finally Woodstock94, I gotta a few peeps 2 travel cross country 2 see ‘em there, & 5 yrs & many concerts later Woodstock’ 99 too, which 2me is Still the pinnacle front man moment 4 Ed🕺🏻but anyway, see im very long winded huh, but anyway, that sold my foolish friends! So gosh these boyZ as a band, thru time & deserved changes in their lineup, have stood that test of time, & still do🤗…Lastly, tho it’s been several yrs back now, when my best friend, my sweet Papa died suddenly in 2019, their song “Staring Down” from the “Rabbit”album in 2009, was so important 2me, & still is 1 of my all time traX too…I just Love everythin Ed, Will, Dean, & crew have given 2me over time, Thank U!:)🙏🎼♥️
Slide, Dizzy, January Friend, iris, amigone, black balloon, iris, truth is a whisper, big machine, lost, over and over, sweetest lie, indestructible and name are also awesome collective soul songs
This was one of the first albums I ever owned. I've worn it out more times than I can count. Absolutely amazing album. Oh and the SP song "Drown" is the song he claimed was ripped off by Roland to make Shine. There is a bit of a similarity, but not enough to claim it was a ripoff.
i wish there's a special edition of Rock Band: 90s alternative music. This'll be in it, along with Suede, Offspring, early Green Days... I would buy that :(
Man…. I thought I was the real deal guitar player….. with these guys… bro Cain and all that stuff. Man.. we had a band but let me tell you…. I’m married with kids and a a toxic wife which makes me wonder if I’m toxic now. I have no idea what’s going on anymore. This song was killer and a memory….. let me tell you. I was on the roof top in Biddeford Maine… just doing vanhalen stuff….. at least I thought I was
