College Freshman Almost Dies After Hazing Incident 

remember everyone: a high alcohol tolerance isn’t a badge of honor, it’s a problem.

We live in a society that glorifies alcohol abuse. That is a huge factor in these kind of tragedies.

I’m a part of a fraternity and we never forced the use of alcohol in any event. It’s incredibly irresponsible.

The fraternity and university need to be held criminally liable.

I've never understood why the hell these rituals in college were ever acceptable. It's bullying and destructive.

This is really sad. People need to be aware of the dangers of alcohol abuse. It’s important to teach people to say No and not give into peer pressure. The whole culture of fraternities and hazing is messed up.

It’s horrible to think that a single decision can lead to a lifetime of suffering.

This is why it's important to teach your children about critical thinking and independent thought. I hope my children would look at this situation and say nope.

When I was growing up, my parents drilled into my head "Be careful who you hang around with". That advice has served me well for many years.

This happens all the time. When I was in college this exact thing happened only the guy died, never woke up the next morning. College kids have no idea how destructive alcohol is.

I can’t imagine what Danny is thinking, just living in a shell of himself for the rest of his life. This is heartbreaking and everyone that made him do this needs to be held accountable to the fullest extent.

Yeah a highschool student that went to my school was allergic to alcohol. They slipped some vodka into her orange juice and she was completely unaware. She became very intoxicated and drowned in her own vomit cause no one checked on her. She died of suffocation and multiple organ failure. Things like this shouldn't be taken lightly and charges to the full extent of the law should apply to anyone involved.

My mom's worst nightmare when I went to college was exactly this: me being desperate to fit in and doing insane things to make it happen. I have never even been tempted. I'd choose a bit of loneliness anytime over endangering my life.

I’m 21, finishing up college. Was at a hall of residence in 1st year where obviously there’s booze everywhere and even in the “non alcoholic building” it was quietly rampant. I refused to give in to peer pressure and play drinking games, which truly is just a euphemism for alcohol abuse. I hardly drink now. I used to a lot then but after a scary experience of lacking control after 6 well-filled glasses of wine within two hours I decided to give drinking up. I’ve never been fully drunk but just seriously tipsy. Always have water and food with alcohol. It’s so sad that young students glorify drinking and voluntarily abuse their bodies for the sake of “fitting in”. I feel amazing, but it’s sad that people admire you for saying you don’t drink only to subtly build peer pressure and ridicule you if you don’t participate. But if that happens then you’re hanging out with the wrong people. Your body is your temple guys (I know it sounds kinda tacky but it’s true), you’ve only got one.

If any “fraternity” requires you put your life in danger as a “test of loyalty”, they do NOT have your best interest in mind.

Never feel pressured to be part of something especially if you know it’s something harmful

I do not get the idea of this foolish pledging hazing nonsense. I never understand it. Maybe because I raised in the Caribbean. Why would I need to prove to people equal like me (students) that I am worthy?

Fraternities won't do you good, fraternities would lead you to bad things. I joined a frat in my college days and it was my most regrettable decision I've ever had.

I'm a freshman in college and glad my parents always had a talk with me about these stupid and harmful things that happen in college. I don't even go to college parties and in the very few ones I've been to, I never felt peer pressured. Fortunately I can strongly say no and no one can budge me from my decision to not drink

I go to the university of Missouri. This is so common it’s ridiculous. I know about 5 people that have died of drug overdoses. I heard about this case but it was like last year. Sadly this is just one of many. That poor guy

I wonder what kind of "brotherhood" the fraternity really shows. It's very very heartbreaking for any parents to see their child almost die for just joining them.

Shoutout to the guys who actually checked his pulse and made sure to get him to a hospital. They were also probably very drunk but knew what to do. Even if they contributed to it, they knew when it wasn’t fun and games anymore

My God. I didn’t even know fraternity’s still hazed. You have got to teach your child to not engage in peer pressure and never be afraid to GET UP AND LEAVE!! Edit: feel the need to add that I am not trying to take away from the tragedy that occurred. It really is heart breaking what happened to him. The “my God” was more a “my heart breaks to hear that” my God. As a mother and teacher, I really try to stress the importance of never being afraid to walk away from a bad situation verses feeling the pressure of staying because “you’re in too deep”. I realize people on RU-vid can be negative and cynical and I hate that my comment might have come off that way.

They “prohibit hazing” and yet the conga line of dozens of kids says this is a regular thing for them. Closing down the chapter isn’t enough. Those students need to be held accountable for endangering barely legal teenagers and putting them in dangerous situations.

This is really sad. Almost makes me want to cry. I commuted to college while living with my parents and barely had any friends, mostly spending my time reading in the campus library (I’m a nerd lol), but seeing stuff like this honestly makes me grateful. Perhaps if I was a frat boy things could’ve gone south in many different ways…Either way, people need to wise up and stop these dumb “frat pledge” dares. It’s more like a “suicide pledge”. So pointless and tragic. I really wish this kid all the best.

Seeing the videos of him running around and smiling at the end broke my heart. He didn't deserve this and this is why it's important to teach your kids to stick up for themselves. I hope he finds enjoyment in life

A lesson for everybody: drinking excessively is usually a terrible idea, and never a good one. Being young and dumb doesn't make you invincible.

I don’t know what frustrates me more: the fact that a college-aged boy can’t reject a stupid command to finish a whole bottle of vodka or the fact that this hazing culture is still going in this modern era.

This is so sad. I genuinely can't tell which is the worst way to go, losing your limbs and senses to a landmine like the soldier from Johnny got his gun or your own friends leaving you on your own and then losing them when they come back to rescue you. My condolences go out to him and his family, and the university should be held responsible as well as the other Frat boys.

I am in a fraternity and hazing is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. I am very happy I joined because of the fun activities and fundraisers we do together and it is a safe space to just spend time with the boys. It is disgusting to see these kids leave a pledge OBVIOUSLY in critical condition unsupervised without help. And in the first place, letting it get to that point is unacceptable. Although everyone should know their drinking limits, it is also a responsibility of upper years and older brothers to keep a look out for their less experienced friends. What an awful, tragic event. I am so sorry to the family.

I almost died when I was 16 from hypothermia and alcohol poisoning. All my friends left me at the place we were drinking because my gf at the time was there... all 120 lbs of her and 190lb me. She couldn't get me over the fence we climbed to get in and thank God she called my parents without my consent. My parents brought me to the hospital and the doctors told them if i was outside 30 minutes longer I would have died. If it weren't for her I wouldn't be here right now

Common sense that drinking a whole bottle of alcohol leads to severe alcohol poisoning? Those fraternity members who initiated this should've known better.

I remember when they pitched a frat to me in college. I kept asking logical questions and they couldn't give logical answers. So I said "nah i'm good" and stayed a stoner.

WHY PEOPLE ALWAYS LET their surroundings to be an influence? Stand up and YOU BE an influence to them. Otherwise, you don't need those kind of friends. Do that which you know is right, not what you which to be right.

I found it chilling that before the incident he was walking just blind-folded at first to being led on permanently blind afterwards. Prayers to the family.

It’s sad that they were able to revive him. I say that because he’s trapped inside his body now, and if it were me, I wouldn’t want to be trapped in my body, nor would I want my child trapped like this. If someone has been deprived of oxygen that long, it’s better to let them go. Poor Danny, this is so sad. His life was over that night

Luckily I was able to stop my daughter from participating in hazing. She was about to inspite of her better judgment. I feel horrible for this family and Danny. Praying that he recovers and that his family gets justice.

Hazing is so outdated. Fraternity life never interested me, but fraternities/sororities need to see these videos to prevent unfortunate consequences like this.
