How long did that take to build Cologne Cathedral? 632 years, from 1248 to 1880. But the construction stalled for 300 years. Which perfectly describes the history of the city. When the construction started, Cologne was the largest city in modern day Germany. And with the bones of the Three Wise Men as a relic, it was a major pilgrimage site, which made a larger cathedral necessary. And since Cologne was a wealthy member of the Hanseatic League, the rich population could afford to finance the new monument. But with the downfall of the Hanseatic League, the construction of the cathedral came to an end as well. For centuries, the unfinished church was a symbol of splendour in the city. The chancel was finished, and the west work was under construction, with a large treadmill-driven crane on the trunk of the southern spire. The nave was completely missing. After the Congress of Vienna, Cologne and the rest of the Rhineland fell to Prussia. And the new protestant lords, with the upcoming nationalism, decided to complete the cathedral. For this endeavour, Master Gerhard's original plans had to be rediscovered. Luckily, a linen cloth with the original sketch of the west work was found in Prague. And so, with modern construction techniques, the church was finished in 1880 as the highest building in the world, until it was superseded by the Washington Monument four years later. The roof truss is made by cast iron, rather than would, which saved the building from the bombs in WWII. And today, due to permanent restoration, you hardly see the cathedral without any scaffolds.

It didn't took 600 years to finish, it will never be finished. Because when it's finished there will be the end of the world. Old legend from Cologne.

It should be mentioned that the construction work stopped between 1560 to 1842. Thus, the actual construction timeline is: 1. 1248: Start of Construction 2. 1560 - 1842: Construction stop 3. 1842: Restart of construction work 4. 1880: End of Construction

Start of construction 1248 1528 construction stopped, no money and Gothic was no longer modern In 1823, two Cologne residents came up with plans and convinced the Emperor to complete the building 1880 "finished" but as a citizen of this city I have never seen the cathedral without scaffolding. It is still being worked on today.

There are also stairs to climb up to look over the city. I did the high walk up after a night of Schnapps and Obstwasser (strong spirits!) and boy was it arduous going up those stairs. A truly beautiful church worth seeing while in Cologne.

@@Charon.1 **Understanding Depression and Anger: Symptoms and Management** 🌈🧠 In today’s fast-paced world, mental health issues like depression and anger are becoming increasingly prevalent. 🌍 It's essential to understand these conditions and learn how to manage them effectively. Let's delve into the symptoms of depression and depression-induced anger, along with a simple exercise for anger management. **Depression Symptoms:** 😔 1. **Persistent Sadness:** Feeling down or hopeless for an extended period. 2. **Loss of Interest:** Losing interest in activities once enjoyed. 3. **Fatigue:** Constant tiredness and lack of energy. 4. **Changes in Appetite:** Significant weight loss or gain due to changes in eating habits. 5. **Sleep Problems:** Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. 6. **Feelings of Worthlessness:** A sense of worthlessness or excessive guilt. 7. **Difficulty Concentrating:** Inability to focus or make decisions. 8. **Suicidal Thoughts:** Thoughts of death or suicide, especially in severe cases. **Depression-Induced Anger Symptoms:** 😡 1. **Irritability:** Easily getting frustrated or annoyed over small things. 2. **Aggression:** Reacting aggressively to situations or people. 3. **Increased Sensitivity:** Being overly sensitive to criticism or perceived slights. 4. **Impatience:** Having little tolerance for delays or inconveniences. 5. **Hostility:** Feeling resentful or bitter towards others. 6. **Physical Symptoms:** Experiencing tension, headaches, or digestive issues due to anger. **Managing Anger:** 🧘‍♂️ One effective way to manage anger is through mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Here’s a simple exercise you can try: 1. **Deep Breathing:** Find a quiet place to sit or lie down comfortably. Close your eyes and take slow, deep breaths. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this process for several minutes, focusing solely on your breath. 2. **Progressive Muscle Relaxation:** Start by tensing and then relaxing each muscle group in your body, one at a time. Begin with your toes and work your way up to your head. Focus on the sensations of tension and relaxation in each muscle group. 3. **Mindful Meditation:** Practice mindfulness by bringing your attention to the present moment without judgment. Notice your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations as they arise, and gently redirect your focus back to your breath or a chosen anchor point. By incorporating these techniques into your daily routine, you can effectively manage anger and alleviate symptoms of depression. Remember, it's essential to seek professional help if you're struggling with mental health issues. You're not alone, and help is available. 💪 **Conclusion:** 🌟 Depression and anger can have a significant impact on our lives, but with the right strategies and support, it's possible to overcome these challenges. By recognizing the symptoms and implementing effective management techniques, you can take control of your mental health and lead a happier, more fulfilling life. Take care of yourself and prioritize your well-being! 🌟

@martinstock

They halted construction for over 300 years. The Imperial Cathedral in Speyer - the biggest Romanesque Church - was built between 1025 and 1061 (and at this time the largest church in Western Europe). However, funded in the first place by the emperors to be their burial place. Gothic cathedrals took generally longer to build. Lots of work for skilled stonemasons which were in limited supply. And often really ambitious projects. St. Martin in Landshut was built between 1385 and 1500. With a height of 130 m still the highest (not steel supported) brick building in the world. At this time Landshut had so 7,000 inhabitants. One thing in Cologne was that soon after the start of the construction in 1248 the city started to fight for its independence from the (prince) bishop of Cologne. Starting with the battle of Worringen (1288) until the official independence of the city in 1475. The prince bishop took residence in Bonn and Brühl. And was in Cologne only a tolerated guest. Not that good for the funding. Like the Cologne Cathedral also the Brühl Palace is a UNESCO world heritage site. When the cathedral was finally completed between 1842 and 1880 funds came from all over Germany. It was completed using the original plans. And was from 1880 on for a few years still the highest building on the planet. Just to show how ambitious the plans from 1248 were. They made some smaller adjustments. The roof is an iron construction - which saved the church in WW2 from destruction (it received so 10 major hits by bombs). And they used a rather soft yellow sandstone which was easier to work on. That was however a bad choice.
