This is literally the ONLY video on YT that someone explains their process so hat's off to you for sharing your wisdom. I agree with all but one point. I'd say if you are designing for a catch-all then you really want to be illustrating in RGB first so that you can utilise the full potential of the sRGB colour range for eBooks and then go in and finetune your images for print after a CMYK conversion.

In Procreate you do have the option to format a canvas in different Color Profiles (Color Modes). I didn't know which to choose, for my Children's book illustrations... and your video was super helpful. Thanks for a great video!!!

Hi! Thanks so much for watching my videos! :) A generic CMYK option is better for KDP, otherwise SWOP v2 should be fine! Mine is set to SWOP v2 and it has come out great.

Very helpful, but I see that Photoshop allows me to choose a range of options for conversion to CMYK. The one that is on there now is US Web Coated SWOP V2, and it is really, really bad on the colors. An ideas which of the many options PS offers is the most accurate one for KDP? KDP says nothing about it as as best I can tell, just says to convert of CMYK.

Thank you for this video, I had a question though, when I download my art from Canva using CMYK, the art gets darker when I view the children's book manuscript. It appears to look closer to how I created it using RGB, so is there a way to know how to fix this so it doesn't get darker? If not, would it be ok to just use RGB when uploading to Amazon KDP? Or is CMYK the option that I should defiantly use? Im open to any suggestions from anyone here btw, thanks.
@HeatherCashArt
@HeatherCashArt 10 месяцев назад
Hi! It will end up looking darker since RGB has brighter, more vibrant colors that your monitor can display. You can definitely download the RGB version and upload that to KDP, and see if you like the printed result. It's super easy to just re-upload files to KDP so you can experiment. But also, keep in mind that KDP uses multiple different print companies, so you'll never get truly consistent results.

Thank you so much😍😍 I want to upload my books on Amazon Kindel but I was so confused about the printing proscess, so Now I have Canva account which have CMYK option😍🥰 but one question please, my book cover is blue, when I save the file as CMYK it turn a little darker, I don't really like it, but if you say that CMYK is better for kids books I will do it for sure, but is there any way to choose a colour I want and not change after saving the file?
@HeatherCashArt
@HeatherCashArt 11 месяцев назад
Hi! So the CMYK colors by nature are going to be a little bit duller / darker than RGB since they are created via printed ink instead of a backlit screen. But one thing you can do is edit the CMYK image and try to make it a bit brighter. It depends on where you are saving your images before you bring them into Canva. The other option is to try exporting as RGB and just see how KDP prints it - it might end up ok or it might not. But also keep in mind that depending on where your book is being shipped to, it can get printed by different printers so it's not always the same.

Hi, thanks for this. I picked a very bright lime green, it looked beautiful on screen and when I uploaded CMYK pdf to Amazon the thumbnail and book page green are horrible. If I choose a less brighter colour will that help? Thanks
@HeatherCashArt
@HeatherCashArt 10 месяцев назад
@@Soxieaus you'll just need to experiment... but yes the colors in CMYK are duller because they aren't displayed on a brightly lit monitor. So less bright colors are more likely to display properly.

How accurate is affinity photo when you convert them (procreate) from RBG to CMYK?
@HeatherCashArt
@HeatherCashArt 6 месяцев назад
What do you mean by accurate? There's pretty much always going to be a color difference if you designed something in RGB and convert to CMYK. I haven't used Affinity Photo specifically to convert but I haven't heard anything about that feature being not as good as other programs.

@@HeatherCashArt what I mean is…will what I see on affinity photo after I convert an illustration from RGB to CYMK for a print version of my children’s book…will that converted CYMK represent what I will see when I get a proof copy of my book. I know that it won’t be perfectly accurate…but if it is some what close, it would be so helpful to me. Thank you!

I have procreate, and I purchased Affinity Photo, to adjust from RGB to CMYK and then I got stuck and didn’t know how to export it. Plus if I export it, how will I know that the setting has changed from RGB to CMYK? If you know the answers to these questions or if someone else knows, please let me know. If there’s a video on this topic please tell me what’s the title of the video so I can search for it. Thank you all.

Hi! You should be able to just change the color setting and then save. I don't have Affinity Photo but maybe I will download it and make a video to walk you through the process. As for knowing the color mode, the way I do it is just save and close the file, and then open it up again (in Affinity Designer) and you should be able to go to the color mode settings and they should be on CMYK this time. Another thing is, on a Mac, you can view the file info (in Finder) and it will tell you the color mode.

I think there's a mistake about the printing process. Amazon use a digital printing for our kdp books and not a CMYK "Offset" machine, because the first process is used for the pod, and the second one is used only when we need to print a thousands copies of the same book. And the two printing machines and process are completely different. So, are you sure Amazon use a CMYK printing process for a unique digital print ?
@HeatherCashArt
@HeatherCashArt Год назад
I'm confused by your question. Digital printing does use CMYK. RGB is how the monitor displays colors. It wouldn't be technically possible to print directly as RGB because, science. If you submit it as RGB, Amazon will end up converting it to CMYK anyways. Here is a resource that explains digital printing. An example of that would be your home printer - it doesn't use a plate, just prints directly on the paper. And the ink cartridges you buy for it are cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. www.xerox.com/en-us/digital-printing/insights/what-is-digital-printing#:~:text=us%20onlineSubscribe-,What%20is%20digital%20printing%3F,plate%2C%20unlike%20with%20offset%20printing.

I write and illustrate children’s books and self publish on Amazon. I am so frustrated with creating, colorful and bright illustrations, only to find they come out Dull and lifeless in print form. I heard that if you export your picture in PSD, it gives you an idea of how it will come out in print. I did this and saw how lifeless my pictures would print out…it was so dramatically different than what was on my screen! I fooled around with color brightness and saturation and exported it again as a PSD…but it didn’t keep the changes I made and came out as lifeless as before. Can you give advise how to make your illustrations bright, happy and full of life in printed form? What is the solution? I waste more time and money with fighting with my illustrations! Some people say, you should export illustrations as PSD, but my formatter always asks for JPEG. So…what is best? Thank you for your advise….would like to have more fun instead of fighting with the process!
@HeatherCashArt
@HeatherCashArt 7 месяцев назад
Hi Lisa, your Illustrations are never going to look as bright when printed as they look on the screen. Like I mentioned in the video, the colors available in CMYK are only a subset of those available via a computer monitor, and since a computer monitor is backlit, the colors are going to be brighter. You could try using a different print company to see if there's a difference but still, remember that even then, different print runs can look different. Or ask your printing company if they have higher quality paper. Also glossy papers usually look brighter. Re: file format, it doesn't make sense to send as a PSD because that would be the layered editable file. You should be sending as a high quality jpg or whatever else your printer tells you, like some may want a PDF etc. But I've never had a printing company want a PSD file. Hope that helps! Heather

It's not a huge deal, worst case scenario if the colors don't look right when you go to print, you'll need to adjust the colors in Photoshop or something similar.
