What a magnificent actor Vic Morrow is. We were able to feel his pain, the concussion and the fear of the deafness! The horror of being lost and helpless something to which he is most unaccustomed. The happiness with which he found and greeted the dog and the sadness when it was killed. There are not many like him in any generation.
Vic morrow is a superb and excellent actor Sargent Saunders is a household name for every grown up children in the sixty Very sad he died on the set of twilight zone he is missed very much until today His leadership in combat is really timeless
That dog was used in lost in space in the episode one of our dogs is missing. Excellent episode. And yes combat was a fan favorite with my dad he has all the episodes on disc with back stories on cast and show. ABC television network 1962 to 1967 last season in color. My dad said it used to be on Tuesday nights at 7:30 in our time zone. Great series! Loved Vic Morrow. Always played a heavy in other shows and movies. Blackboard jungle for one. He is sorely missed. Born 1929. Doc and Kirby only ones left from major cast. Kirby’s 90 .
Man who played kerby pass at 94 in 2023 another interesting but sad fact was Rick Jason, who played the hard-boiled leader Lt. Gil Hanley he took his own life at 74
Get chopper accident was the director's fault he wanted more realism he told the chopper to fly closer to the ground and explosion knocked off the tail rotor he was decapitated Vic Morrow should have never died that way it should have been manslaughter two kids died too they shouldn't even been working at that time it was a big legal battle cuz he had underage kids working at night and they wer chopped up by the main rotor too it was really a horrific scene and they had it all on film because the director put them In harm's Way you can't have special effects going off when you have a machine there you never know what could happen
An amazing episode. Vic Morrow's life was sadly cut short. We were thus deprived of an truly outstanding actor, who never got the recognition he deserved. Combat will always be a tribute to his unique acting skills. This is a superb episode.
Vic should have had an excellent career!!! I think with his intelligence and gifted talent the suits above felt threatened and I don't think he played their game. Vic wanted to do great work and also direct. Shame on those that didn't allow it. God bless Vic and those two children!!!
@@kathrynmcmahon4048 -very good post. I saw behind the scenes of Combat and the producers of the show said he was a very given actor. I heard nothing but praises from his co-stars of the show. Also, he was a great director. He director some of the most memorable episodes of the series.
I loved Combat as a kid and thought Vic Morrow was the best. It never occurred to me back then that Sgt Saunders would lose his helmet and M1928A1 Thompson with a Cutts compensator on a semi-regular basis but in the next episode he'd have the same helmet and same Thompson! And he had his magic jacket that held his stick mags, grenades, maps, binoculars and c-rats. Great episode!
I would have liked to see the dogs name and trainer. After all it was done for Rin Tin Tin and Lassie along with Gentle Ben and My Friend Flicka. Another great show.
In those days Ivan Tores had started a special animal training program for TV and movies at his place AFRICA--USA when shows like DAKTARI and BEN THE BEAR had been populare there were a lot of books and articles to find about it. Might be those dogs were trained there as well. Nowdays those methods to prepare real life animals for filming are much more commen.
F.Y.I The German potato masher grenade used TNT as an explosive the American grenades used black powder. It was not as powerful but, by using a cerated cast steel container that fragmented it had a larger kill radius the Germans and Russians did have what was called a fragmetation sleeve that could be attached increasing lethality
Such well-made episodes. Great camera work, sets/locations, direction, and music, as well as acting, of course. Just makes so much current stuff look like slick tripe.
While in the Military was too close to an explosion, couldn't hear for 2 hours then gradually my hearing return. Talked about being confused, scared, The Ships Doctor was sure when my hearing would come back and how good my hearing would be.
@@larrylucas8385 Your's sir, is one of the most sensible comments I have read during the months I have enjoyed re-watching this fabulously produced piece of dramatic art from my childhood. The quality of acting, the writing into screenplays and production was almost always beyond just excellent. The armchair commentaries about a moments continuity lapse, a military procedure or the use of MGM backlot scenery ( did the commentators note the footage of actual French buildings from series 4? ) have no idea how well this serial was engineered over its years. It deserves all its accolades. Yes, watch an episode at a time, as people should look at one painting to the next. The painting, not the frame or wall it's mounted on.
2/15/21- Better they serve as landmine and IED detectors. Give them a dull knife and make them poke the ground while on their knees praying. They might learn a little humility.
Vic Morrow, was made for this Action Drama Movie. Such Class, ad superb work done, Can't believe his Youngest Selfish Daughter Jenifer Jason Leigh, Born 1962 changed her name to despise her Father Vic... then SHE had the audacity to collect a wrongful death settlement in the Helicopter accident that claimed his LIFE.. How to you Spell SKANK !
@@kathrynmcmahon4048 In 1958, Morrow married actress and screenwriter Barbara Turner. They had two daughters, Carrie Ann Morrow (1958-2016) and actress Jennifer Jason Leigh (born 1962). Morrow's marriage to Barbara ended in divorce after seven years. He married Gale Lester in 1975, but they separated just prior to Morrow's death in late July 1982. Morrow fell out with his daughter Jennifer after his divorce from her mother. She changed her last name to Leigh and they were still estranged at the time of his death. Another 'behind enemy lines' episode. Seems that Saunders' squad was "cut off", "lost", "over-run" or on a "special mission" more than every real-life WW2 US Army squad combined .
Most of those episodes came over very realistic in my opinion Especially when you compare them to old World Sar II authobiograpiies of soldiers and special service men. A lot of those had been republished in the Fifities and Sixties in the READER´S DIGEST magazins.

They frequently had the "Germans" in these episodes armed with what were supposed to be semi-auto G/K 43s -- but I don't think that's what they really were. Anyone know what actual rifles were used as a substitute in this series?
In my opinion they were real Gew43. My bet is in the 60s was cheaper to buy some confiscated Gew43, MP40 and Mausers from US army. They had warehouses filled up of those when Germany surrendered. Why bother to buy a full price post-war rifle that look alike and plug it for blanks when the army had a lot of real ones to scrap?
considering the war in Europe lasted only about 11 months from the date of the D day invasion June 6th 1944 until May of 1945 some wouldn't have had time to recover from all of those wounds
My father's war lasted for six years, from 3 September 1939 until 6 April 1945 including France Belgium Dunkirk and Italy. RAF British Expeditionary Force , Air Advance Striking Force and RAF Regiment. He volunteered in 1937...
Every time a German soldier fires his rifle he can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn even when he has plenty of time to take his aim at an American soldier standing out in the open.
What a gorgeous and sexy man. He TOTALLY got screwed by those fools who were jealous of him. He should have gone a whole lot further and higher up in his career and those that kept him down knew that!!! Shame on them. God be with you Vic and children ALWAYS. GOD BLESS!!!
Well what do you want?..the main cast stars shot dead in a long running series never to return? Get real , stop nit picking a great TV show. Robert at 67.
the scene at the lake...where the german shot at the american...im sorry to say...but the german would have killed him...the k98 mauser was deadly accurate out to 600 yards...but i digress...
The blast of the grenade caused temporary deafness. Perhaps the ear drums were affected. I wonder if COMBAT! was already hurting with the ratings. Perhaps the dog was a device to appeal to Lassie fans. Lassie was about halfway through its incredible 20 year run. If so, having the dog die probably wasn't the best idea.
Ratings were always good for Combat, a slight drop off in last year, the color episodes. The dog dying fits into the storyline and shows the humanity in the tough Sarge. Well written script. Robert at 67.
@@danrobinson572 This puppy was a stray, I know dogs are awesome in wartime for explosive detection, and enemy placement identification. I just hate seeing any animal hurt. Have a great day.
