Trolleybuses in Prague? Nothing out of the ordinary for the next few years. You can already ride the trolleybus in the city. Where? And where will the next trolleybus lines lead in Prague? That's what we focused on in this part of the Live Prague series.
Even 50 years ago, we had over 57 kilometers of trolleybus lines in Prague. At that time, trolleybuses even ran on Wenceslas Square. In the 1960s, however, they began to be replaced by buses. The last trolleybus left the metropolis on Sunday, October 15, 1972 on line 51. But after half a century, trolleybuses in Prague are experiencing a rebirth!
The city started building the first modern trolleybus line in January 2022, and you can currently ride the trolleybus in trial operation between Palmovka and Miškovice.
There is no need to be scared of the unsightly webs of trolleybuses over the capital's roads. Trolleybuses from the SOR Libchavy have a battery and will only need wires on about half of the track.
Of course, it will not end with a single trolleybus line. It is already certain that, for example, in 2024 we will be traveling by trolleybus from Veleslavín Railway Station to the airport. Why is a new trolleybus line being built for 350 million crowns, when it would be easier to lay tracks for the expressway? That's the million dollar question. After all, we have already covered the expressway and the problems associated with its construction in our series: • Proč stále nemáme vlak...
And what do Prague's plans for trolleybus transport look like? It's going to be:
replacement of bus line 131 on the route Bořislavka - Hradčanská (new line 51)
replacement of bus line 137 on the route Na Knížecí - U Waltrovky (new line 52)
replacement of bus line 176 on the route Stadion Strahov - Karlovo náměstí (new line 53)
replacement of bus line 191 on the route Prague Airport - Na Knížecí (new line 56)
replacement of bus line 201 on the route Nádraží Holešovice - Černý Most (new line 61)
What do you think - do trolleybuses in Prague make sense? Or should the city rather invest in the development of other means of transport? Write to us in the comments.
By the way, if you need to move around Prague really quickly, neither the trolleybus nor the subway will help you. The train is the fastest! See for yourself in our video: • Jak cestovat po Praze ...
