I've tried all the diets you mentioned. My gut deteriorated on a Mediterranean ish diet due to all the fiber, so I went even more plant based to "clean up" and got much sicker. My functional medicine doc put me on Paleo, which helped, but was highly dependent on supplements and very restrictive. Keto made me a mood swing nightmare, and I hated how much it relied on processed food. I arrived at Nourishing Traditions and GAPS largely for the sustainability and palatability aspects. It's such a treat to enjoy dairy and sourdough and real food I can source from my local community. I'm not shipping on packages of processed food approximations that taste terrible. In addition to feeling better, I feel more connected to my food and local community. And it's delicious! When you eat real good, nothing is a guilty pleasure.

I started Keto back in 2017 after my body flared up and I could barely move. Luckily I did recover partly because I made the connection between food and health. I stuck with Keto very strictly for 3 years and went as far as trying carnivore and though I was in great shape I could tell that my gut health was not good probably because of the keto sweeteners but most importantly I felt my diet was taking over my life and it lacked joy. It took me a while to find my balance but whatever I'm doing it sounds close to what the Weston Price diet is. Thanks for the video, I think I will look into learning more about the Weston Price diet.

The primal diet is a diet is a term coined by health guru and author aaujonus vonderplanitz It is very similar to a Westin A Price diet in that i diet that focuses on raw fats from all different sources, raw meats, fish and eggs. The primal diet is a very healing diet as is gaps but I find the gaps diet to be a more gentle approach and her books so much easier to follow and understand. ;) thanks for sharing your point of view!

I am currently on a keto gaps diet. I definitely think some people on the normal keto diet eat too much "keto" processed food. In terms of paleo i think its slightly different than primal...primal people will eat raw dairy but paleo won't. Primal also avoids nuts and seeds and most vegetables but will include fruit, honey, and maple syrup...I am not 100% sure but thats what I understand about it.

I think your Keto comment is true of people who go gluten-free for a few weeks too. GF bread and snack alternatives are so sugary and just as devoid of nutrition as modern wheat is, so casual dieters often don't see much benefit, unless they're celiac.

My thoughts are find the way of eating that's fits you. Everyone is different and trying to fit into a "diet" doesn't work. Know your body's reaction to certain foods and go with that. Mix and match to your liking. I personally stay away from certain carbs and sugars that affect my non reactive hypoglycemia. Stay healthy all and always be happy.
@lovetobe6118
@lovetobe6118 2 года назад
That is a good thought, but I think it needs to be taken to a deeper level. I tried so many diets with the belief that everyone is different and I just needed to find my box that fit me, but I could not actually figure out exactly what my body needed because I was just stuck in the strict box of a diet before moving on to the new small box that never was a comfortable fit. GAPS and WAPF was so different from a box. It was a foundation that changed how I saw food and most importantly taught me how to identify what tweaks I needed to actually heal and get better more permanently. I have found that the GAPS diet and WAPF when done correctly helps a person find the exact diet they need at the time that will meet their individual needs. People, who I do the GAPS way of healing with, don't eat the same as me, but they still see healing just like I do. Some do the more plants version of GAPS, others have to do keto or no plants. I have found that I thrive on low plants GAPS that has no nightshade vegetables and a lot of healthy animal fats combined with bile supplements. I also have friends who do WAPF and eat differently from each other, but they thrive as well. I guess what I am trying to say is that I see those two ways eating as an excellent way to optimize your bio individual needs while keto, Paleo, and other diets I did, did not keep me away from at least a few foods that were obstructing my healing and devoid of incredible healing tonics/food prep methods.

I started what I understood to be the best GAPS protocol for myself on July 1st. I have bipolar disorder, anxiety, and PTSD. I gained well over 100 lbs since I started meds for bipolar, and now I also have terrible acid reflux which I think may be the result of all the medications I am on. When I started GAPS I was eating meat stock/bone broth (I used chicken legs with the meat and skin on), chicken, and beef meatballs cooked in the broth. I was also eating veg like carrots, cauliflower, and zucchini cooked in the broth. In 3 weeks I lost 15 lbs. I fell off hard because of stress at work, and then tried getting back on GAPS, but I just couldn't do all that cooking in the summer heat in my little heat trap apartment. I just restarted keto today, and will do keto for now, and when the weather gets cooler I will go back to making the bone broth. I hope to heal my acid reflux so I can stop taking Nexium. I think for the long term I will probably end up doing GAPS keto. I'm not using any sweeteners, because sugar is my nemesis. I also noticed after being on GAPS for 3 weeks my knee pain (I fractured my kneecap and shattered the tibial plateau in Sept. 2021) completely disappeared!

The other ways of long term and temporary eating that could have been mentioned here are FODMAP, low-histamine, Whole30 (just because it's popular and shows up on menus), Keto specifically for diabetes/insulin resistance (or Eat Like a Bear/candida), and the Blood Type Diet. While I don't subscribe to every theory by D'Adamo, I do recommend the Blood Type chart to everyone who feels like there's "something missing"--a food bothering them (or their children) that they can't pinpoint even after an elimination diet. Whatever it is usually ends up being on the "avoid" list for their blood type. It's so helpful that the chart includes unusual foods, like vegetables no one would ever think to eliminate, for instance. However, I mostly came to the comment section to give my two cents on both the vegetarian and calcium comments. For one, there are definitely people who thrive on a vegetarian or pescetarian diet, and I think this is where blood type, family history, DNA, and dis-ease come into play. Second, milk = good calcium levels has been pretty thoroughly debunked. Even disregarding whole countries that rarely consume dairy, anecdotally our whole family can't eat dairy (and neither can our functional doctor), and our calcium levels are demonstrably fantastic because we take vitamin D (calcium and D are inextricably linked), soak our almonds (among other things), eat small fish (you consume the bones when you eat anchovies, for instance), drink bone broth, avoid caffeine and sparkling water, etc., etc. When I found the Paleo diet, it changed my life, and so I made the mistake of trying to convince everyone to go on it (including my vegan friends), but eventually, I realized that some of them were perfectly healthy eating whatever appealed to them most, which definitely didn't include pork, any red meat, and sometimes even certain healthy fats for many of them. In the end, I realized that people need to eat right for their bodies. Nothing is ever a "one size, fits all," and sadly, no amount of good sourcing and proper preparation will change food sensitivities, autoimmune triggers, or gut issues for some of us. It's important to be open to the myriad ways of how to treat food as medicine and through that discover what works best for your body, rather than blindly following any protocol to the end. I think this is why many thrive on the Mediterranean or South Beach Diet, for instance, as there's really no reason to eliminate entire food groups, if they agree with you. Today, I would consider myself "modified Paleo." The only advice I would agree applies to everyone is eat more whole, unprocessed foods and less sugar. Cheers!

@amandalinhitt
@amandalinhitt 2 года назад
@@RestorationAcresTN that is very interesting. i’ve never heard that about lentils. I can tolerate lentils ok but typically only eat them a couple times a year in small amounts in soup. it’s not something i eat frequently at all, because my husband doesn’t like them. there are a lot of additives like carrageenan and thickeners even in “organic” foods like store bought dairy, that do bother me though. i’ve heard they can interact like gluten. Also, i’m sure you know this, but testing negative on the blood tests for celiac can be a joke thru a normal MD. there was a lady I worked with before I was married, she had severe reactions to the tiniest amounts of gluten, and said her test came back a reactive protein result of 19.5, so the doctor wouldn’t diagnose her with celiac. (you need a # of 20 minimum to have “official celiac”.) which is laughable in my mind, because she had all the symptoms! my result was off the charts like in the hundreds. but I had severe inflammation from a bad infection of lyme at the time. my gut has been healed over time on GAPS/AIP/WAP.

Have you tried using Einkorn flour? It's an ancient grain that has never been hybridized and non GMO. I had given up grain for years and when I went back to eating it again I found it gave me heartburn discomfort but Einkorn does not. A company called Jovial makes it and the owner discovered it because her daughter was unable to handle any other type of flour.
@amandalinhitt
@amandalinhitt 2 года назад
@@MrsSquishy2010 I just started making einkorn sourdough from jovial einkorn this year. My husband loves sourdough so I make it for him. I asked my naturopath if it would be safe for me to try it since I have celiac, and he said yes absolutely, especially since I have made my own starter. but we both decided it is best to wait to try it until my baby is born as I tend to have a more sensitive stomach while pregnant. i’m very excited to try it eventually! but interestingly enough, einkorn flour does not make me break out in hives on my hands like normal gluten does.

I was trying to do the full gaps diet ( didn’t do the introduction diet because i was pregnant and nursing during that time) i still had a lot of gas and bloating. What are your thoughts on low fodmap and gluten feee flours?
@BumblebeeApothecary
@BumblebeeApothecary 2 года назад
Great questions! The gas a bloating was likely die off. When you moved to having low fodmap and gluten free, you likely introduced more starches which slowed the die off down. For some people, full GAPS triggers too much die off, and they have to start with only some of the GAPS components and do those for a while before really starting full GAPS. As far as low fodmap, taking out some of the vegetables with certain anti nutrients may have relieved some symptoms. This is something that we sometimes do on GAPS for very sensitive people for a time. Hope this helps!

Hey, Thanks for your vid. Can you do a video talking about dairy? My quarrel with it is that no animal drinks the milk of another animal, and it seems to be intended for babies. Adult animals of any kind dont drink milk anymore. Also, as humans grow older we produce less lactase so we should have trouble digesting it. That means it rots in the stomach and ends up taxing the liver which has to take out the trash. I get that there is a lot of healthy fat and fat-soluble vitamins in dairy, but couldnt you just eat animal fat instead? Sorry, I would be very interested in hearing your take on this! :)

Wait, let's have a WAP conversation, shall we. 😆 Fat quality MATTERS. I also get a lot of people who are trying to follow one of those diets but end up feeling worse and then doubt themselves instead of questioning the dogmatic idea of following diet rules strictly. It doesn't matter what diet you're on, if there is something you can't digest, don't push through because you're "supposed" to. 🤷‍♀️ Comon sense should be sold with every diet-book. 😉
