I'm disappointed the "What If?" Mode didn't become a staple for Marvel games. That was such a great secret to add replayability and encouraged you to reexplore. I wish we lived in an a multiverse if you will where Neversoft or Vicarious somehow made a 3rd or 4th for PS1.
Apparently the Spider-Man movie game was originally supposed to be the third entry in the Neversoft/Vicarious series, but the movie was going to come out around the same time so they decided to add the movie story to the beginning and end of the game they already made to make it line up with the movie.
No thank you for Vicarious. They were probably given a tight deadline and not as good of a budget and it's probably Activion's fault and not Vicarious, but Spider-Man 2 is a huge downgrade almost across the board (except PS1 Spider-Man textures) vs SM 2000.
@Flandrew There was also another version (kind of). There was a promotional demo on PC for the first Rami Spider-Man movie in collaboration with Kellogg. The demo had the character model swapped with one that looked like the movie and the billboards had been replaced with things like ‘Got milk’ and other things related to cereal. You could only play up to the Rhino fight as far as I’m aware and it also contained promotional content for the movie as well. I think it was only available in America. Look it up, it’s one of the strangest promos I’ve heard of.
... So THAT'S what I played as a kid! I've remembered Got Milk for decades and now I think it's from that. That would explain why I don't remember all the game, and how I even had access to it.
Had it for Dreamcast, loved this game. One small detail I really loved was how Spider-Man's portrait in his health bar icon would match whatever outfit he was wearing. If he was wearing the symbiote suit, then the portrait would change to the symbiote to match it.
This was my favorite game as a kid. I had the PS1 version. My best friend had the N64 version. It blew my mind when he told me that there were no cutscenes and it was all slide shows.
Pro tip for the Monster Ock chase sequence: Just keep jumping. It's more efficient than swinging. Your swinging is constantly either deviating you towards the walls or will automatically stick you to the foreground wall if you don't stop it in time.
@@MGrey-qb5xz I actually find the repetitive "Where are you, boy?! DIEEEEE!!!" quite charming and nostalgic. lmao Every time I play that game, it just takes me back to my childhood again. Love this game to death. 😅
One of my favourite games of all time. I've never had the honour of playing the Dreamcast version but at least we have the cutscenes on RU-vid. I'd love to see this game remade or at least for Monster Ock to make a comeback whether it be in a comic, cartoon, film, game or even just an action figure.
Boy this video hit me in the nostalgia feels . My father had bought this for me when I was in the first grade in 2000. I just had my apendix removed and was in the hospital for 5 days . When I came home this game was waiting for me along with Digimon world for Ps1. I remember I had a few days off of school when I got home and my uncle would come over to visit and we’d play Spider-Man for hours
After years of playing the PC version (practically my whole life), it took me so long to realize that in order to fix most of the game's issues, you have to cap it at 30fps. This can especially help beat different levels, like the crash that happens at the beginning of the Scorpion boss fight, and the moment where Spider-Man swings off the falling crane during the helicopter chase
The game was coded with 20 FPS in mind btw, the Mysterio fight is much harder on anything higher than that because of him firing pretty much non-stop in the second phase
Man, this would've been so helpful all those years back. Only reason me and my bro stopped replaying this on PC was those bugs at Crane level and the Venom chase cutscene where Spidey doesn't jump out.
I loved this game when I was little. My brothers and I took turns trying to beat the Carnage-Octopus chase for about a month. Finally, our stepmom beat it for us because she was tired of hearing the same sounds over and over again.
Another difference from the Nintendo 64 version is that assets (especially audio) are extremely compressed. It also lacks the What If? mode. The codes used to unlock content are different between versions, too.
I actually played the Game Boy Color version. It was good, the developers even added a hidden level. The level looked like World 1 of The Super Mario Bros. Game on the SNES where Spidey could freely collect extra lives and hearts before moving on to the next level/mission.
What I understood from the plot, the fog that clouds the city is just that, fog. Used as cover that symbiotes that appear in third act, could take over citizens with no problem.
I remember getting the demo of this and played it so many times. I got the full game for my birthday and was so excited. I played it for an hour before school then just wanted to get home and play it again. I replayed it so many times.
You did it again Drew, you keep giving good content. I been supportive since phantom menace video cuz I know this channel will one day be big because of the great content
@@Flandrewkeep it up buddy, maybe one day you can live stream a coop game with your brother, I would pay to see that since you mentioned how sometimes it would be difficult. Anyways from us in Las Vegas thank you for your work
This is still my favorite Spider-Man game and I own every version of it. I just think it perfectly captures a day in the life of comic book Spider-Man where as most of the later games went for a more realistic approach.
I really hate when people judge a game's quality based on factors that are SOLELY due to how old it is. What with limited hardware and graphics and such. It's a lot more fair to judge universal things like the style of gameplay, the story, any unique mechanics, etc. I only bring it up because games like this get a lot of bad rep based on the limitations of the era.
Considering the Doctor Octopus chase is what I remember the most about this game when I rented it at Blockbusters, I'm pretty sure I also found it really difficult.
We need to discuss the Kellogg's Spider-Man Movie PC game which was just this game all the way to the Rhino boss fight. But your skin was the Movie suit in all the promo art.
I remember watching my older brother beat this on PS1. Felt like we went on a whole journey. The payoff at the end was so rad; seeing Captain America pop up, the card game & villains made it feel like we just finished watching a giant Marvel movie. MCU precursor, huh. We also thought Venom was hilarious.
9:44 PS1 version, the black symbiote suit, and only 2 tries to beat the last level. I had RE 1, 2, and 3, so that gave me an edge with the tank controls. 😁
I have to thank Neversoft for introducing me to the world of video games because THPS3 and Spider-Man are some of the first games I remember playing in my life. And I have to thank you, Flandrew, for letting me reminisce about the times when the only thing I was worried about was how I get through the goblins in HP1! Speaking of Neversoft, how about comparing every version of the Tony Hawk's series? I've played them all (the good and the bad) and I've seen so many videos on them, but I would really love to see your take on it!
neversoft was a slam dunk dev back in the day--like you i grew up on the thps games and these old spiderman games but they also made the most popular guitar hero game (3) and it was of the same quality if not better than that series original developers Harmonix.
YES! I'm so happy to see this on my feed, I adored this game on the PS1 as a kid! Although I could never finish it as the disc was a little scratched and my PS1 struggled to read it past the Rhyno boss fight.
Monster ock scared the innocence out of me and my friend when we played this as kids. There’s a reason why I can still remember those screaming noises 23 years later 😨
Loved this game when I was a kid. My favorite suit was the Amazing Bag Head and the last level was one of the few games that got my heart racing as a child and every time I died or beat it, my controller would be very sweaty...
oh man, this game was my childhood, it introduced to so many aspects of spider-man, it basically made me into an obsessed spider-man fanboy for many years to come
I have this Spidey game on the PS1. I like how they got Rino Romero to the voice for Peter/Spidey since he was voicing him in the Spider-Man Unlimited animated series.
This takes me back to my childhood and I was a big fan of spiderman. I had this game on the playstation and on the pc and I've completed this game over 20 times.
I got this as a Demo Disk from a Kellogg's box of cereal back when they actual added prizes in the box based off the promotion. Sometimes you got demo disks for games that are upcoming that you can pop into your PC install and play. If your PC lacked any graphical hardware then they would add a smaller game that would work on every computer, keeping compatibility in mind. Man I miss those days, I got to play a demo of Extremely Goofy Skateboarding that way too...
I played these back to front as a kid, I got spiderman 2 on release on the ps1 and then got this version afterwards and struggled with the helicopter mission so never finished it, I replayed number 2 multiple times though so looking forward to that one!
Friends, I will talk about a problem in the Venom episode. While Venom jumps from the skyscraper, Spider-Man also jumps but automatically falls to the ground. What is the reason?
I had the ps1 version it was my first real video game for myself when I was like 4. This game sprouted a seed of love in me for the character of Spider-Man. My favorite suit was probably the black suit but that might have been due to I often didn't have a memory card would play on kid mode and didn't know the cheats. So I ran through that game start to finish constantly. The end level with Monster Ock always scared the crap out of me. First thing that ever gave me that much adrenaline in my life.
This game will always hold a special place in my heart. It was my probably my very first introduction to spiderman followed by the Raimi movies. I'd go to a cyber cafe to play it all the time as a kid. And I had a demo that I played the heck out of when I got a pc Still the 2nd best spiderman game of all time imo. It's paced perfectly. All the levels and boss fights feel different. And along with all the combos, it has really high replay value. I must've completed it atleast a dozen times, and I just completed it again a few days ago on my phone with a dreamcast emulator. Has all the iconic spiderman characters and suits. Venom is funny as hell in this game. Hearing Stan Lee's narration always brings a smile to my face. And daredevil, human torch and Cap showing up briefly were cool moments. It honestly felt like it could fit in the continuity of the 616 comics rather than being a completely separate thing. The game has aged beautifully which is not something I can say for most games I loved as a kid. I can appreciate it alot more now as an adult.
The GBC version of this game is the origin of the chiptune song used in that infamous "Here's Spider-Man running on the Game Boy Color! Now we wish there was a portable version of Spider-Man 😎"
The PC port was the first spiderman game I ever played. I loved all the unlockabke suits, and looked up the cheat codes to unlock some of them. My favourite was peter with a paper bag over his head.
I grew up with Spider-Man 1 and 2 on Playstation. I was the unoriginal kid that loved the classic black suit, for the unlimited webs. But nowadays it's 2099 all the way for looks. And I don't remember how long it took me. Only that I lost repeatedly when I was younger. And I had to rent it again just to beat it. (I didn't own many games growing up)
I discovered it on my cousin Playstation and buyed the Pc version for me soon after. It was so fun and full of possibilities for it s time. I remembered we laughed about spidey swinging on clouds also too. At the time I never realised the pc had better models. Thanks for your work.
I, the resident NYer in the comment section, return to once again share my knowledge that yes: our sewer systems are in fact full of never ending chasms. If they weren't the Turtles would be caught right away, and the blue alligators would run rampant on the streets. Awesome to see you cover my absolute favorite spiderman game! I have not played many of the modern takes or spiderman 2 for the playstation, but I have largely heard most people hate this take on the wall crawler. I could never see why. Yes, the camera was awkward but the attention to detail when it came to spiderman as a character in the gameplay/story telling/characters/collectables always made up for that for me. The combat was fun, the collectables taught me so much history on this character I loved due to the show/SNES games I owned, and it made me appreciate the few comics I had enough to finally actually start following them as a kid. I fully credit this game as the reason I became a huge spiderman fan. I did have the N64 version, so I never knew what I was missing with the cutscenes. That was surprising to see. To me, the comic panels fit in so seamlessly I never batted an eye. Ultimately, I wish modern takes on spidey had half as many historical suits as this game...that's what really made it for me. The what if mode and characters you see in the comics much more than most of the other spiderman media really helped it feel like you were getting a true comic marvel experience. I hope to rebuy the game someday so I can enjoy it again (sadly it was my brother's game).
Had the N64 version back in the day. The black-suit Spidey costume was my favorite, even though it looked more blue than black (as did Venom and Black Cat). Back then I thought the game was a continuation of the 90s Spidey cartoon show, rather than its own continuity. Didn't help that Black Cat and Doc Ock had the same voice actors, while Rino Romano did sound somewhat like Christopher Daniel Barnes as Spidey to me. Anyway, still a great game indeed.
2:12 More like Blue Cat WTF. Venom is blue in this game too, it's weird. Though he has been blue in other media like the Marvel fighting games by Capcom (save for MvCI and the Anti-Venom Battle Card in UMvC3) so IDK. Ironically Red Venom is actually one of his pallets (albeit white as the secondary color instead of off-yellow) in MvCI (and Anti-Venom is an alternate costume) but the blue color is not. The Dreamcast version didn't make them black but it did at least make them darker.
I'll never forget how me and my friends somehow activated the What If mode without realising and being genuinely stupefied by the subsequent playthrough. This game was amazing, besides the final escape level with monster ock, that was stressful as hell.
A little fact: Dee B. Baker who mostly well know voicing Clone Troopers in Star Wars animation and video game voicing Carnage and Lizard. He even reprise Lizard and Dr. Connors in Spectacular Spiderman years later. Also i'm shock you called Tony Hawk Pro Skater instead Tony Hawk Skateboarding.
my memory a little hazy, but I'm convinced this was the first video game I eve completed. I played this soo much as a kid! I even had the sequel, but didn't enjoy that as much as the first game.
I played the demo for the ps1 where you did the mission to get too and fight scorpion. It’s was really cool, and at a later point I got the full game and finished it and it was top notch for a licensed game at the time. I was only six and big enough to make it too the bathroom on time but I sure did take my time on the toilet. After a good hour on the can I came out too see my twin brother had been playing and I missed large parts of the story. But back then it didn’t matter so much. Was waaay better than the grinch who stole Christmas game. Love you flandrew
This game and the animated show are what got me into spider man, and he’s my favorite superhero now. This game isn’t perfect, but to me, it’s perfect for me
The PC version was one of my first video games... But idk why, the game always crashed in the Scorpio cutscene, so I just kept replaying the bank levels. But it was so fun for me as a kid!
You should do a video comparing every sequel to the Spider-Man 2000 game released in 2001 (The Sinister Six for GBC, Enter Electro for PS1, Mysterio's Menace for GBA), as well as videos comparing every version of Ultimate Spider-Man, Friend or Foe, Web of Shadows, Shattered Dimensions, Edge of Time, and the Amazing Spider-Man movie tie-in games!
I didn't even know the game had a what if mode. To be fair it's been years so I can't remember much of it. I do remember spending ages on that last level not realising I was suppose to swing to escape, so I just kept running and got caught 😂
An absolute classic from my childhood. The What If mode was absolutely bonkers. I later came to find out that all the collectable comics you can find in the game are fictional. I always assumed they made a comic to go along with the game. Nostalgia aside, I still think this game is worth playing because of the fact it's not TOO long of a game.
This game was my childhood I remember as a kid going over to my friends place watching them play this when I got stuck. And them calling dr.pepper game juice. Do a comparison of the burnout games please.
Played the PS1 version and loved it for how much it felt like the cartoon atmosphere-wise, but I don't actually recall the final level giving me much trouble. Either my memory's flawed or I just found some trick to mitigate the danger.
