This video discusses some of the different ways that a dentist or hygienist could be compensated at an office. It is based off of questions I’ve seen on different forums. Please pay particularly close attention to what matters most!

So many things to consider. Just like in all major life decisions, there are many layers to consider that affect your lifestyle and life/work balance and happiness.

There’s lots of factors to consider WAY beyond just the pros/coll dollars and cents. 😊You have to consider the entire package as well as the environment.

Indeed! But with the enormous, crushing educational debt, what do new grads look at first?

there has always been a conflict between collections and production. The owner Dr. Gets paid on collections and I don’t think it is fair for a new Dr. To get paid on production especially when everything from patients to supplies etc are all provided (obviously some difference between a new grad and someone who has experience). For a new grad, I think a base pay for at least 90 days is a better idea. That way they can count on income and work on accuracy in their procedures. Speed will come in time but going for speed first to make more money will result in lack of accuracy and quality over time. I wish the dental and hygiene schools would emphasize their inexperienced safe beginner status and teach humility and coachability over the money. I get that a lot of students have debt but it isn’t the practice that you are joining’s responsibility to pay you more because you need money. Another thing to consider along with how the practice is scheduled, is support staff, how many asst’s are available to you if you are a new Dr? Is the practice open to a new provider (RDH or DDS) joining the practice or not? If possible, I would ask to be able to come in and observe a day or two to get an idea of the flow and demeanor of the practice. Love the topics Dr. Alessandro brings up!!
