Competitors in the Irish Jig, a Scottish national dance, during the 2022 Kenmore Highland Games. This friendly Games is held on 6th July 2022 by Loch Tay at Kenmore in Perthshire, one of the few evening Highland Games in Scotland.
The Irish Jig is one of the Scottish National Dances for competitions. The Scottish version is a parody of an Irish washerwoman in an agitated frame of mind, an energetic dance featuring lots of fist shaking and skirt flouncing among female competitors. It is a parody of Irish dancing and the infamous Irish temper. Males dancing the Jig act out the happy-go-lucky Irishman facing his wife’s tirade. It is one of the two Scottish National dances that has its own costume rather than the standard Highland or National outfits.
