I did some tweaking to color, contrast, and the audio (removed the annoying slew tone emitted by the telescope, thanks to the various posters who gave me the frequency to eliminate). Tracked using Teletrak and captured with an 8" LX200 Classic. Recorded with a Canon T5i @ f/6.3

Who knows how long the car will last, at the rate it appears to be rotating it should not reach either of the temperature extremes. I would think it should last much more than a day. Put your hand in the oven for a short period of time and then stick it in the freezer for a short period of time. Continue the process and your hand will never freeze or burn :) It appears that some of the paint on cars are baked on at around 360 degrees F. Oh and tires are vulcanized they do not melt easily. The car may not be pretty for a long period of time but, it will be in space a very long time.
@observer359
@observer359 6 лет назад
I think they were trying to prove that this rocket could work, that it could deliver a payload to space and the boosters could land and be reused making putting things into orbit/space more economical. This is something new and unique. Why would they feel the need to prove that something can be put into orbit/space when it has been done thousands of times before? Or is it that you don't buy that either?
@observer359
@observer359 6 лет назад
The UK building thing. You would of thought the building designers would of thought about this being a problem. But yep I used to burn ants by concentrating the Sun's rays through a magnifying glass. The black ones would burn easy but the red ones wouldn't burn. :)
@zed1stwizard
@zed1stwizard 6 лет назад
Chuck P [again] Your last point was your best. "But hey, what do I know?" When you transport an auto by air are the tires inflated? There are protocols for such things. Not inflating the tires is not a modification of the tires. What temp do low-profile tires start to melt? How long does the melting take to deform the tire? How does the rotational speed of the Tesla (period of every 4 mins by some calculations) effect the heat exchange rates of materials on board in a vacuum? You can look some of this up you know. But it will require a tiny bit of effort.
@ViperEye

The success of FH is a gamechanger, for sure. That and our odds of being a space faring species perhaps got a whole lot bigger and realistic... Really enjoyed this footage. How hard was it to keep it in frame? Maybe you could do a video about the tracking system for those of us that are interested.
@Astronomy_Live
@Astronomy_Live 6 лет назад
Andrew Laird I did all of the tracking by hand for this launch using the joystick and while I won't say it was easy it was definitely doable. I'm confident that I could keep it in view 100% of the time on every launch as long as the weather is clear like this. Automated tracking can automatically follow the flame but for SpaceX launches some of the most interesting bits occur when there is no engine firing. For that you do need to be able to control it manually with the joystick. I do plan to do a video covering this and showing more of how I do the tracking next time there's a launch. I'd really like to screen capture footage of the tracking program during the launch but I didn't want to risk that overtaxing the computer during the tracking for this historic event.

why is it that the booster rockets on lift off are white and on landing they are black and white ? also on some videos the sonic boom was heard just before landing. and some other videos it was not heard until 15 seconds after landing ? great footage the best i have seen . but to me after the boosters separated the main rocket looked like it was headed for the ocean ?
@Astronomy_Live
@Astronomy_Live 6 лет назад
The boosters are covered with soot from flying through the kerosene plume of the center core as well as their own exhaust on reentry. The sonic boom delay varies with different distances at different sites. And the trajectory of the center core should be heading down towards the horizon as it goes around the curvature of the earth. You can see this exactly in the simulation I ran this past weekend.

And the Darwin award goes to... 1st bird in history to be killed by a landing rocket. What a unique way for a bird to die. Did they have to wipe it off?
@G_Cs
@G_Cs 5 лет назад
The bird survived. If you have software that will allow a frame by frame step (VLC), you can see that the bird remains to the right of the rocket, and even though faintly, it is slightly visible disappearing off the top of the screen as the rocket drops further. The bird size compared to the rocket suggests that the bird is nowhere near the rocket, but somewhere between the camera and the rocket. Any bird flying close the descending rocket would be sure to get out of the way real fast. Birds only get trapped when in a flock when they can't easily get out of the way, such as the ones that have been trapped by Jet engines. At the time the rocket is descending when this bird is visible, it is nowhere near as fast as a Jet airplane. After the rocket has landed, you can see birds flying around on the other side of the water. Looking at the landed rocket, you would expect those same birds to be so tiny that you could not see them from the camera location, and with the rocket still descending, the bird would have to be extremely large and extremely high up. I've watched and filmed a lot of launches myself from very close, and often there are birds flying around the launch site, but I have never seen one so close as to turn into a crispy critter. The launch blast pushes air outwards as the hot air expands, so that cushion and push would probably blow a bird sideways, but conceivably the hot air could overcome the bird; just haven't see it happen. I think some of the higher resolution cameras that news crews use would capture it, and someone would be making a comment about it. I think the birds are more likely to be hit by a baseball pitch because that has happened (search it on RU-vid).
